Add Horseback Riding and Carriage Driving as activity types

I use Strava to track my horseback rides and carriage drives.  I've also recommended it to other riders/drivers.

    Hello,

We're consolidating activity type requests to this thread. Please continue to add your requests to this forum.

As always, we appreciate the feedback.

  • I'm an endurance rider and use Strava to log my rides too since the GPS and elevation gains are accurate. Strava needs a horse category BecUse I've inadvertently pissed the mountain bike community off. I recommend Strava to all my friends.

  • Hi all at Strava. Greetings from down-under! I am a keen road and MTB cyclist and use Strava in conjunction with my Garmin device to monitor my cycling activities. I have also found that Strava is very useful as a training aid for monitoring my horse riding activities. So my question is, as with the ladies above, could you consider including in the profile section where the type of bike is recorded, another option where you could list a horse or group of horses and record them by name or identification number? cheers, Paul Wilson

  • Hi…I just started using Strava on my training rides (on my horse not my bike). I love it and would love to see a horseback riding option in terms of the activity. I am recommend Strava to all my friends runners, hikers, cyclists and equestrians. Please add the activity for the equestrians!!!!

  • Yes,

Please add horseback riding.  To an endurance or trail rider, your app is so valuable for recording training stats.  We, & our horses, are athletes  - include us!  Not to diminish the efforts of say, ice skaters or roller skiers, but I bet there are statistically many more horseback riders who would gladly buy premium memberships. . .

  • I figure the more comments the merrier....  Horseback riding is a natural fit for data/map geeks that.  I run, ride, bike, hike, and horseback ride, it would be great to be able to distinguish the horse rides from the bike rides.

  • I bought the premium membership already. I think I will keep my setting on mtb and the mountain bikers that get their QOMs taken away might urge Strava to get a horse category. Obviously us asking for it isn't working.

  • Ah, it's early days - it looks like the earliest request was only made last month. They've added a whole bunch of categories in the past four months, I'm sure that the horses will be coming soon!  encourage your horsey friends to request it, and encourage your mountain bike friends to gripe.

  • STRAVA!! My activities continue to be flagged by local athletes in the area! While I understand their frustration, please understand ours! Please advise whether the horse category is being worked on or if you plan on adding it or not. I have a premium membership, advise all of my endurance horse friends to use the Strava app as well due to its very accurate GPS and incline measurements, but if this isnt something Strava is interested in, I need to consider another application. Thanks for listening! I love Strava and dont want to break up!!

  • My wife and I love Strava and use it while  training for our Endurance rides & whilst on endurance rides .

I am often getting kudos from other bike riders for a ride well done but its unfair on the bike riders as our horses are considerably faster.

    Please add HORSES

  • There are ten of thousands of endurance riders in AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference) http://www.aerc.org.  Most of us use GPS on our training rides or in competition.  Strava is perfect for keeping track of our training or to be able to compare our competitions.  Please add the horse activity as an option to choose.  I would love to be able to follow the endurance riders in my area to see their training and where they ride.

Many of us use GPS on our training rides and in competition.  I would love to be able to see where the riders in my area are training and be able to compare training rides.  Come on Strava, adding equestrian or horseback rider is a no brainer and would add thousands to your user base.

  • Hi, I am writing to request you to add equestrian to your activities. Many people would benefit from this added feature and it would attract a wider range of people using your app. Thank you for your consideration.

  • Horseback riding has still not been added. I guess I'll have to keep logging my rides as "runs" so maybe the runners in my area will get upset about this.

  • Ya and even more mad if you take some CR on segments with your horse...so they will complain and Steava will create horseback riding option :)

  • I have posted a related response to @Christy here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/63556184-How-should-Equestrians-categorize-their-Activities-on-Strava

"The entire Strava Community matters to us! However, we simply have limited bandwidth for projects as we are still a small company. Right now, we are focusing on our run and cycling features, so we don't have the capacity to focus on many other sports at the moment."

  • Thank you Elle...all the strava team is doing a fabulous job and I understand running and cycling are you're priorities....I run everyday so I appreciate what Strava offers for runners...but what people are asking here is just a choice of activity to record their activities...like you offer canoeing or kayaking or rowing or skateboarding...they just want the option Horseback riding to upload their rides under...just the mileage the speed and the elevation gain...just a simple thing...but we will wait until you have more time to create it...thank you and have a great day

  • Here's an idea.  No offense to the roller skiers or stand up paddlers but how many of those participants are there compared to how many equestrians would use the app.  Why not just change one of those activities to equestrian.  All the code would already be in place to keep the records and the change wouldn't be that difficult for the programmers.

  • My mum is a keen horse rider and would also like to see strava extended to equestrian trail riding, for what it's worth.

  • Yes please, please please add horse back riding as an activity, just spent a weekend riding on Exmoor with 10 people, 5 of which were mapping with their Garmin!! Why isn't there the option? I called it "bike" but won too many cups!!! Please sort this out Strava, us horse riders cover a lot of ground.
    Thank you

  • Please add horse riding as an activity, it's the one thing Endomondo has that Strava doesn't.

  • Hi Strava,

Having sent an email to you asking for the possibility of adding equestrian sports as an activity type, I received the response that I should add my "Me too" in the forum (which I have and I thank you for your rapid response).

You also mentioned that if there is enough interest then, and only then, will you add it as an activity type. Because of this, I have had to seek other options (I have seen some threads dated over a year ago yet still the activity hasn't been added). The longer you go without adding it as an option, the bigger the workload will be later to change each activity type when/if you eventually do add it (once I transfer them over from my Garmin). I started changing my current tracks to 'Hike' but it's such a humongous task I have now given up, because it really doesn't accurately reflect the activity done anyway.

I have seen that Endomondo have a routes map (though unfortunately no heat map, this is really where Strava shines for me) where people can share their equestrian routes publicly - simply adding equestrian sports as an option has won me over to Endomondo.

You have 'Stair-stepper' and 'Snowshoe' and 'Stand-up paddling' - perhaps these sports are more practiced wherever the makers of Strava reside, but here in Western Europe, I guarantee you that horse riders outnumber those sports, and several other sports in your list. Horse-riding is the number one most practiced sport by women in Belgium and France and the fifth most practiced sport by men. As a member of a number of equestrian-related UK-based Facebook groups, I know that the British and Irish horse-riding communities are also huge.

While the relative proportion of those practicing endurance riding is not the largest in the equestrian community, the majority of horse-riders go on hacks on a regular basis. To be able to find new routes that have been used by other riders would be a huge advantage: riding on roads can be dangerous (motorists are often unaware of the dangers of driving near horses) so we cannot share cyclists' routes (and anyway, riders generally prefer to ride off-road) and some runners' routes are not accessible to horses. Moreover, I read in one of these many threads that tracking our activities as off-road cycling (only available in Premium anyway) annoys the cyclists, and reasonably so; the activities are so significantly different that a separate category is really needed.

I hope you will seriously consider adding equestrian sports as an activity. I would be happy to pay a fee and us Strava Premium for this function but will not join until I know it's there (and on the heat map).

On a technical level, I can't imagine it's a huge burden to add it to the list of activity types (I understand adding it to the heat map may be a larger task), and once a few start using it and spread the word, the Strava equestrian community (especially the endurance riders and hackers) is guaranteed to expand.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

  • I chuckled at Rachel's post about the cyclers being livid. On a hill route my wife, her friend and I horseback ride regularly we are KOM and QOM. My wife and her friend fight it out for QOM but I have no competition for KOM. Our horses can travel up the hill at almost 20mph which far exceeds anything cyclers can do. Kind of fun to see ourselves at the top a long list of athletes. Thank you to our horses.
