View all Segments in Segment Explorer

I'm always looking for new segments to conquer and many times there are some good ones already defined that just don't show up on the segment explorer.  Is there any way to have a "see all segments" option?

  • I'm only using Strava a few months, and I notice the segment explore has actually gotten worse. When I first started using it I could see far more segments. Now, there are far fewer visible. The other segments still exist, and I've found new ones by accident, some of them very popular.

So why can't we not see more of them again?

In some areas, its clearly not a problem of overcrowded or overlapping segments - as there are plenty of these visible in Dublin city centre where I run sometimes.

  • @Alex Pilafian, Segment Explorer would only show a segment if its both ends are visible in the map area. So if  you keep zooming in all except very short or loop segments disappear. This is the design that makes it nearly impossible to see longer segments in the explorer.

Furthermore, it seems there has been another change just recently. It seems there is now an absolute popularity threshold, so less popular segments don't show at all even if there are no other segments on the map.

  • I sure hope the old segment search functionality is returned soon. Presently every run segment in my town is no longer searchable as are most of the ride segments.

One of my favourite things about STRAVA is to seek out little used segments in remote areas. It allows me to determine which tracks are physically possible to ride and what route riders took. This is no longer possible.

I'm also partial to a bit of Strava hunting when visiting new places and once again nearly all of the segments are no longer searchable. For town after town there are now no segments or perhaps just 1 or 2 that are searchable.

  • Yes I have also noticed that the Segment Explorer is flat out broken.

There are segments in existence which will not show up on the map (or the search) for love or money, even when you zoom in to exactly where they are (making sure to include start and end points).  On the left side of the map there are no results listed, not the "Top 10" that are supposedly meant to be shown for whatever region is in the map view.

C'mon Strava, how about you just roll back whatever changes you must've made to the filtering because it was working pretty well only a few months back.

  • Segments that were there a couple weeks ago are all gone....in explorer and search.   Zooming as stated previously many times does not fix.  List view shows 3 where previously over 50 showed for the same area.  Frustrating!

  • The segment search and explorer have been useless for the last week or so, ever since the story came out about the military using trackers and potentially giving away critical information about base layouts.  I'm hoping it is just a temporary thing.  Right now, segments that I used to be able to see all the time do not show up at all.  Whole areas that are ridden all the time don't show any segments.  I can't even find them by name in the search (I am typing in the exact name of the segment) any more.  PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

  • In my home town of Reghin, Romania i cant find any segments at all neither in the Segment Explore regardless of how much i zoom in, nor in the segment search if i search by the city name or by the segment name (https://www.strava.com/segments/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&keywords=Reghin%2C+Mure%C8%99+County%2C+Romania&filter_type=cycling&min-cat=0&max-cat=5&terrain=all, https://www.strava.com/segments/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&keywords=sarii&filter_type=cycling&min-cat=0&max-cat=5&terrain=all), although i know there are segments in this exact area (https://www.strava.com/segments/16789459?filter=overall, https://www.strava.com/segments/16334701?filter=overall etc.) and with the search string in the segment name ("Sarii" in this case).
Is this some problem in my account settings, or is this the new "functionality" of the segment explore and search? Up until about a week ago, even if in the segment explore i couldnt find any segments in my town, at least in the segment search i could find some if i searched by the city name, but now even that is not working anymore.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

  • Well, Elle, block these military areas then and not the entire planet. You know, I'm pretty sure there are no special forces units hiding out on my farm or my neighbour's.

  • Elle Anderson - Come one.  You have been copying and pasting that same statement on just about every thread.  What is up?  Strava suddenly is losing a lot of it's functionality, especially concerning segments, and at the same time stops actually answering support questions from it's users.  I am a Premium member and am really wondering what I am paying for.  I'm really close to cancelling my membership as a result of this crap.  I have multiple support questions in for days and no response from Strava.  Garmin Connect is starting to look better and better every day.

  • If u guys are true hardcore strava users u will just create routes thru the area in question and it will expose the segments (even if u have to use manual mode because no trails there)

  • Honestly, I dont believe that the "privacy issue" has much to do with our problem...

  • Good to know i am not the only one with this problem. I was wondering if i was really stupid in not finding my own created segements :).

I actually created today a new segment as on the Leadersboard of a segment it showed that my PR time was a better time than the CR, but i didn't arrive anywhere on the board. We can not find segments but even Strava can't recognized that my PR on that segment is faster than the CR of that segment.

  • At it's most basic functionality, Segment Search is useful for extreme anger, befuddlement, and disappointment.  Strava "team" does some nice things but why the Segment Search is so awful is baffling.  Segment Explorer is it's evil twin, which kinda works.  They have the worst search engine.

  • I am abaolutely not happy about that. I got the same standard answer from Strava after I sent a message about the missing segments. I recently upgraded to Strava Premium because I wanted to use Live Segments on my Polar watch. Now this feature is useless because I cannot set most of the segments in a certain area as my favorites because they dont appear anymore on the segment explorer map. This is a big bummer and wasted money for the premium membership. If Strava won’t fix that pretty soon, I will definitely cancel my premium membership.

  • The popularity filter is now jacked up way too high or there is some other change that has made the feature useless...

  • What does the heat map have to do with Segment Explorer?!  Where are my local segments on Segment Explore!  It looks like it is only showing popular segments.  Really frustrated and incredibly disappointed.  Strava please provide an update on when you are going to fix this.

  • I thought strava was supposed to motivate people, hiding about 90% of the segments in my town hasn't really done it for me. I use segments for speed training and it makes a big difference to my running but I can't see where they are now.

  • I was looking for segments that I remember I had done before. I thought the guys who made them had removed them. But no. You have really ruined the explore segments option completely. Only most used segments are viewable in explorer now. I had to remember the user that made it. Find the day he ran it. Then click on the exact segment to open it! YOU CANT EVEN FIND THE SEGMENT EVEN IF YOU SEARCH FOR THE EXACT NAME OF IT, IF IT IS NOT POPULARE ENOUGH! WHAT?? FIX IT NOW PLEASE!

  • Put me on the list of disappointed.  I've submitted 2 tickets before realizing that this thread was collecting comments. In an area with 50 segments...3 are showing.  We've been creating local segments to highlight new trails...all gone.

I read the letter before submitting everything but it didn't mention that it would make a lot of what we know and love about Strava useless.

Alex P, funny stuff.  Once you are on the job and sort that shit out maybe you can make it so you can tag somebody from the PC and not the crappy android app that has random enhanced features (like tagging) but then again, hardly any features at all.

  • Judging from the comments here this might be the beginning of the end for Strava.  Everybody will cancel their memberships and Strava won't have the money to fix the privacy issues they don't have.  I'll loose my urge to push for new segments (not that I can find them anyway) and get fat and die.  Well, it was fun while it lasted.

  • Add another unsatisfied Strava Premium member.  This is BS.  Zooming in should show the less popular segments.

    Q. What is the point of "Segment Explorer" if you can't explore anything?

    A. None

    Q. As James said "what does heat map have to do with Segment Explorer?"

    A. None

Strava, you're losing it.  You're adding more ads and more BS, taking away more functionality.  Your customers, who are athletes- want more functionality and less BS.

Austria is Not in a war strava. Its just Mountains and Woods. Please give us The map back.

  • Another disappointed Premium user here! The segment explorer was much better just a few weeks ago. What has happened Strava? Please show that you actually care about your users and answer this. Thanks, Ali

  • Glad to see that I'm not the only one with this problem. Segment explorer is now mostly useless.   If I recall it took 3 years of complaining for them to finally update heatmaps (and the result was spectacular). So I guess I'm ready to wait and expact the new Segment Explorer to be ABSOLUTELY SPECTACULAR.

  • Similar experience here. Segments previously visible through segment explorer have all vanished. Not sure what changed in the code base but it needs revisiting...

  • I agree on people saying how crucial it is to see segments on the map. I've used Strava for years for road / xc, and I will not quit Strava like this, but for new people there is nothing now that gets their attention: the data, the segments!

Strava used to answer the question "where do you guys ride?" but it's now shooting its own leg. I'm not angry or disheartened, but more like afraid for the future. If I had any money involved with this business, I had already started making big noise.

Yes, I read about army bases vs. heatmap in Finnish news, but later on Finnish defence force publicly wrote how they deal with location privacy. It was not at all strict to my ear. I understand that active operations abroad is different than army training, but what if...

    1) Make global heatmap viewable through Strava account login? Cuts off the most of the world easily. At least for the time being.

    2) Segment explorer already is restricted to users, has always been, right?

I know a user can be a leak, but it feels kind of far fetched to think such things for... what, global security? Who's data is it anyway?

  • I live In Kalgoorlie Western Australia, 99% of riders here are roadies therefore the 1% MTB riders' segments have now disappeared as they are no longer 'popular' compared to the roadie segments.  It sucks as I love finding out that 'out of town' MTB strata hunters have been here and tried stealing our local MTB segs.  Now they will only find them by luck.
