View all Segments in Segment Explorer

I'm always looking for new segments to conquer and many times there are some good ones already defined that just don't show up on the segment explorer.  Is there any way to have a "see all segments" option?

  • Spread the word--Strava is returning premium subscription fees for the services that are now missing.  I was a premium subscriber from 2011 until last week.  After receiving no input to a support ticket I opened, I asked and received a refund for my premium subscription (pro-rated).  You can reference the ticket I opened (ticket #991107) where they issued the refund.  Strava without segment explore just isn't Strava.

  • I have the same problem. I suspect that Strava has set up an absolute popularity threshold in terms of Segment Explorer for the recent news that Strava Heatmap gives away some military secrets.

But I think this setup does not make much sense and it hurts a strong feature of Strava. First of all, soldiers should not upload their track data up to the Internet. It is their responsibility. For common people, many people including me like to (or have to) travel with bike or running shoes. When I arrive at a new place especially not very popular, it is the Strava community that helps me to find interesting segments to ride or run. It saves a lot of time and gives me extraordinary experiences.

Now the functionality almost totally fails. Nevertheless, I hope this functionality will come back soon.

  • Practically all segments in my area have vanished. If this stays like that, Strava has lost its core feature which is about finding interesting places to ride or as an incentive for training through competition.

Hope this gets attention by being picked up by some media like rainmaker or CyclingWeekly, the staff seems not to care about it?

  • Been a premium member for nearly 5 years.  I'll be cancelling if this isn't resolved soon.

  • Segment Explorer works again. Finally...

  • It's mainly working. Some less popular segments aren't being shown. It's especially obvious when you try and find Cat 1 and HC climbs on fire trails as most are now absent.

  • The threshold seems to be 10 riders now.  If 10 people haven't attempted the segment it doesn't show up on explorer.  It's a lot better than it was but it still keeps those secret mountain bike trails secret (even if you are trying to share them).

I can still buy an AR-15 but I can't see my buddy's new singletrack.  It is an odd world.

It still seems like Strava would tell us about the changes instead of just letting people complain about it.  So, Strava, will we ever be able to see new segments with just a few riders again?

  • Thanks strava for listening to the users 👍

  • I live in quite rural area and rarely see a fellow cyclist on my rides. I've created dozens of segments in the neighborhood, of which I see none in the explorer. Great!

  • This is very frustrating, rendering the most engaging feature of Strava nearly useless... In my local area I now can't see or find most of the segments that I want to view.

Is there an alternative app out there that can find the lesser used segments that are currently invisible?

I can understand trying to limit the number of segments that show up on any given view, but surely give us the option of filtering to view those that are hidden?

  • do not know if "Segment Explorer" issue related, but noticed also some are missing if looking our route from other user's (following us) profile.

Basically public created segment behave like private one: only visible by creator
It is a difficult "bug" to find out since
1)you need looking at your route from another user's profile (indeed I've discovered by accident)
2)not all created (public) segments are affected
    Any ideas?

  • Same problem for me. I create some new segment on new track in good place, but they are not on the explorer because they are not popular. So less popular segments will never be popular with this kind of filter. So due to this issue i'll stay free user.

Peoples choose strava for segments. If you kill your spirit, you will loose users

    regards

  • This is quite a bummer.  Moving into a new area last year, and there were a few "segments" that I wanted to run.  Now they're gone.  You can still do them, but they don't show up on the map.  Making it very hard to find.

I live in an area where it would be very unlikely to ever have 10 runners using strava, so every segment is gone.

  • Yeah I'm sick and tired of Strava.  I cancelled my Premium membership last month, thanks largely to this matter and their unwillingness to listen to the members.  It's like the UCI.  Completely road cycling focused and corrupt to its core.

  • I was very excited when I saw the segments feature. I live in a rural area in which there are only 2 other people on Strava. I figured the segments map would be an amazing opportunity to show others the really awesome untapped riding we have out here. There are literally millions of rural acres without a segment on them and, due to the “popularity” threshold these places will not get on the platform. It’s sad. Perhaps Strava could institute a population factor in its “popularity” threshold? If all of the users in a 100 mile radius have ridden a segment... is it not popular?

    sincerely,

    all rural bicyclists

Very disappointing Strava, I can’t even find my own segments in the segment explorer, I ride in remote areas and once used the explorer to plane rides and measure my performance, these changes are making Strava useless. Once again very disappointing!

  • Is there really no official response to this for such a big issue from 2015? I just discovered Strava and thought this would be amazing, but I live in a rural area and there are no segments around at all, I figured I would create a bunch of fun routes, but what is the point if no one can discover them and join in?

As many have noted, sure I understand they may have to cull some of them if there are tons, but they should always show at least 10 segments on the selected area, even if these happen to be new and unpopular.

Or is there any good workaround? The only real workaround I've found is to create a google doc, and copy the links of your created segments and make a list, then others can follow the links, click on favorite and they will show up in their favorites, in time maybe enough people will make them popular enough. But it's a serious shit solution when they should really just show up on the map.

  • Yep, same story here. I'm trying to boost up mountain biking here in Ruka skiresort and creating Segments was a very handy tool to get more people to ride amd to discover new trails. Now that Starva is giving us BS about popularity treshold, creating or finding new trails is basically impossible. Strava was a very good and useful app, now it's just useless.

  • @Jonathan Smars,

The only way I have found other segments in more rural areas, is to find at least one segment at least somewhere close to you if possible, and then click on those runners who ran that route and see if they hit any other segments on that particular run.

It's how I found a segment right next to my house that literally only had 6 people attempt it.

  • It would really be nice if Strava acknowledged this.  The link to the blog at the top of this article leads you here:

"Reach out to our Community Support team if you have any questions or want help.

And when you get here all you find is more frustrated users.

Strava: Please get rid of the segment popularity change!!!  Please let James Quarles know our frustration.

  • @James Hero thats quite a good way of finding more segments! Thanks for that!

My suggestion is that EVERYONE who reads this, starts a support ticket and complains about this. You've taken the time to look this thread up and some even reply, take 2 more minutes and write a quick support ticket about this. If enough people do it maybe they will listen, I doubt they are reading this post at all. I have!

  • Totally agree. So many features that used to exist that no longer do. This one in particular and the ability to explore segments using satellite imagery and not just the bland standard map is a great miss.

I would have thought at the very least, paying subscribers should have access to these. Very disappointed.

  • Would have nice to have seen this feature fixed instead of the time being spent breaking premium into 3 lesser packages.  When will the segment explorer functionality be restored?

  • what is needed is for it to return all of the segments within a search area, paginated, not just 10.

that also needs to apply to the API as well. it would also be useful if the API would return segments that start/end within the bounded area, not just those that are full contained in that area

  • I think a filter for segment distance would make segment explorer much more useful. I'm trying to find some longer segments to do (I want to work on longer efforts), but I can never get them to show up. If I zoom out they are over-shadowed by all the short segments that are more popular (I only know about them if I encounter them by chance and see them after I upload). It seems that short segments by default are more popular. My hypothesis is that the shorter a segment is the larger the number of riders that encounter it will be, thus allowing it to become more popular. Some longer segments might be more popular if riders were able to seek them out instead of find them by chance.

  • The identification of segments in a given area is the main issue for me that lets Strava down. An app that is all about segments but does not have a user friendly or acceptable way of finding them. you need to be able to expand the map to full screen to see all segments in a particular area not just a few selected ones.
