Start and stop timing at designated points on the map
I often start my ride with my phone in my hand so I can start the timing as I pass a landmark. Then I put the phone in my pocket while I'm moving. At the end of the ride, I pull the phone out of my pocket to stop the recording, usually on the side of the road (I have avoided mounting my phone on the bike to avoid the potential distraction). I would rather start the timing about a mile from where I start pedaling because that mile is a warm-up, not really part of the ride, and it is in a neighborhood--lots of kids, traffic, and stop signs. But I start timing when I start pedaling because it is even less safe to start it on the first non-neighborhood road.
It would be great if I could pick a point on a map to start the timing, and another point (or the same point again) to end the ride. That way, I could start Strava when I put my helmet on, and put the phone away until I park the bike. This would be convenient, but more importantly, it would be safer.
This feature would also reduce the problem of not being able to see my display in bright sunlight.
As a related feature, I would like to specify zones (think parking lots) where the ride timing would automatically pause, and then resume when leaving the zone. Again, it would be both more convenient and safer than having to pull out the phone, punch in a password, pause the timing, and repeat to resume timing. This is a common occurrence with group rides, where I see many riders with phones in hand while the group moseys out and forms up on the road. That is a particularly awkward and unsafe situation.
I think this feature is the best way to cover the intent of related start timing suggestions.
