When using polar heart rate monitor do you record in polar or strava

So I've followed the various instructions in https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/360034839691-Analyze-your-Performance-with-Heart-Rate-Data and https://support.polar.com/en/support/how_to_pair_a_heart_rate_sensor_with_polar_beat_app_android to pair my heart rate monitor in polar and then integrate it with Strava.

The remaining question I have is how do I use this?

Do I record my runs in Polar and then it syncs across with heart rate data? Or do i record in strava and then strava accesses the heartrate from polar?

  • Strava couldn't combine these two recordings, therefore recording with Strava isn't an option. You have to use the Polar app and setup the upload to Strava there or you can use any other app like Wahoo Fitness that can record with heart rate and can upload it to Strava afterwards.

The easiest way to setup the connection from Polar to Strava is via your personal settings in the flow.polar.com web site:

  • Recording in Strava (on your phone) is an option. I run with watch and phone. My Polar 's GPS (M200) is way less accurate than my phone - so I  use https://gotoes.org/strava/Combine_GPX_TCX_FIT_Files.php to combine HR from the phone and elevation and position from the watch (having exported GPX from each activity). Takes a couple of minutes.

  • I'm getting duplicate entries if I try to use my Polar H10 and Strava. I understand Strava knows about this, and won't be fixing it.

So my question is, what exactly is the point of using Strava, if you have to go through gyrations to use another app, and then upload to Strava, or use another app, and delete duplicate entries in Strava?

At this point, if Polar had something similar to Beacon, I would completely abandon Strava, because I see no utility to an "app" or website that requires me to use another app to get what I want, and then massage everything to keep Strava from giving incorrect analyses.

So, seriously, am I missing something? What's the point of this?

  • Glad I finally found this thread after wasting hours trying to figure whether the system really was *that* dumb (neither sifting through FAQ nor contacting support has brought any answer so far).

So, instead of simply using HR data from an HR device specifically purchased from that purpose, I'm now supposed to use the shoddily-made Polar app to record everything, if I want HR data in my Strava activities? Can someone remind me why I am paying a Strava subscription for that? This is utterly ridiculous.
