  • I love the local legend feature.  Thank you.

I have noticed that some of the competitors for local legend appear to use two devices to record their rides, which show up twice in their activity and get double counted for their local legend status.  I noticed this double recording early on when I started using strava and recording my ride with my apple watch and the strava app and then importing my activity from apple health into the strava app.  I now exclusively use my watch.  It seems like it would be fairly straight forward to only count one of multiple attempts at a segment if the attempts significantly overlapped in time.  This would make the local legends feature more motivating for those of us who pay attention to it, and would keep an app/device arms race from escalating.

Thank you for an awesome app, and for your consideration.

  • I'd like to be able to opt out of the Local Legend feature while still participating in leaderboards and challenges. As I understand it, the only way to opt out of Local Legends is to change the privacy setting from "everyone."

  • I would like the local legend feature to have some filters on significance (more than X attempts by one person, more than Y people attempting, at least Z people within range of leading) so that the segment info is not cluttered with useless achievements.

I thought the local legend feature might be interesting, but so far it is not useful (Philadelphia, PA area). Every segment has the banner taking up a huge amount of space to tout silly achievements like a leader with 2 attempts on a segment in the last 90 days. Cool.

I got an e-mail notifying me I had one for a segment I'd done once and wasn't even sure where it was from the name.

As-is it seems like users will just learn to ignore it. I've already just filtered that part out on my end in the browser because it is uninteresting data. Maybe best to just have on the segment page and not on segment info shown on activity pages.

  • why do you feel the need to have local legends and then separate out women local legends ? It feels very demeaning to me that women's efforts are not considered equivalent to others and need their own leaderboard. Why not just local legend  - it has nothing to do with gender

  • I am finding LL is being made fairly useless by runs being double counted. I have seen Strava double count for people running with an Apple Watch and an iPhone but there may be other combinations.
It’s the same issue William-Mattson has above. It’s really frustrating to those who do like the idea of LL. Are Strava able to fix it?

    thanks

  • Dear Support,

We like your local legend concept but we only see it
when running in France or Germany.

Living in Luxembourg, we are wondering when it will be available in our country ?

Is there a rodamad concerning the next availability of such a feature in other countries.

    Thank you,

    Brgds,

    Laurent

  • A few months into this I'd again like to ask Strava to implement basic "worthiness" filtering. So many notifications dilute the utility of it. I see tons of "legends" with single digit counts in the last 90 days. I've earned legend status for a single attempt.

Segments should have some minimal level of activity before counting. Otherwise a lot of screen real estate when trying to look at segments is wasted touting these achievements and people will either mentally tune them out or just actually remove them with browser plugins.

  • A fun feature that expands on the Local Legend function would be to have Turf Wars. Essentially, a person identifies their home club, then every time they make an effort on a segment it counts for them and their club on that segment. The club with the most efforts 'owns' that segment. This would be a fun way for different riding clubs to challenge each other. Clubs could plan group rides to go and poach segments from other clubs to expand their territory. A map showing the segments colour coded to the local clubs would also be a neat visual of the reach of each club.

  • As a lifelong cyclist looking for new challenges I have found the Local Legend feature particularly enjoyable. I like the idea of being able to compete with other STRAVA members to be a Local legend and not having to worry about not being the fastest.

Since discovering it I've tried to build up the number of segments that I am the Local Legend of and to see of how many I can claim the title of Local legend. I use the app on my phone with it's list of my current winning segments to keep trace of my successes.

However I've now gone past 100 as the number of current segments where I am the Local Legend but I find your app list does not register any more than 100 at any one time.

I write to ask if you can increase the capacity of your app and this list beyond the current 100 segments, (limitless would be ideal) so that I am able to keep track of all my winning segments. Allowing me to more easily know those where have lost my title and to target to reclaim it.

  • When you are "fighting" for a local legend first place, it can happen that you have around the same amount of tries on a segment as the first place. However, since time goes on, it can happen that the first place looses one try while you stay on the amount you have (depending on when the tries happened).

In this case, you become local legend "silently", no activity is marked as "You became local legend for..." nor do you receive a mail or any notification. This has happened to me twice on the same segment.

For segments that have more than a certain amount of tries (let´s say 10 where it becomes interesting), it would be great that a new local legend is posted in the feed of the athlete in case it is not directly related to an uploaded activity...

  • Hello Armands Eglītis and Scott Carichner,

LCL will be released to all countries and all run/ride segments soon.

As for the segment loss emails/notifications, we are always looking for ways to improve this experience so I'll pass this feedback along.

  • You absolutely need to implement minimums for this feature (per the top comment)!

I got an email last week saying I'd lost my LL status (I didn't even know LL existed before that - I guess they were just enabled in my country). But the email said I had attempted the segment precisely ONCE.

Now this week I seem to have won back this status but I've still only done that segment three times. It makes a mockery of the word 'Legend' when you can earn it after having only run a segment a few times (and once is just plain ridiculous).

I would have thought "Local Legend" status should mean a large number of runs in the same area. As it is I'm ignoring it completely because it's completely meaningless.

  • Is there a reason that Local Legends are awarded by gender? I opened a segment that Strava says I hold the LL on, just to see that the overall LL is actually held by someone else with a significantly higher number of runs. As they're won by frequency, not pace, I don't think the differentiation is needed.

  • It seems to me that a local legend should be for all time, not 90 days.  One doesn't become a "legend" in a few months.

  • Considering you will continue to split MTB and eMTB activities, could you extend local legend to EMTB segments?

  • Hello jasper hermsen,

You will receive a badge on the activity and segment page when you earn Local Legend status. If you lose your Local Legends status to another athlete, you will be notified via email.

  • Like Neils above, I find that all my segments that have a Local Legend leader shows me as having done zero rides, when I know of course I have done plenty! I'm sure when this feature first started earlier this year I did feature as a LL on a few segments, but somehow it has stopped! I have not changed any privacy settings, etc. What is happening?

  • Jay Bee . and Rick Swagler

Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us regarding the Local Legends feature. To opt-out, please follow the instructions below (note that currently, the only way to opt-out of Local Legends is to use our mobile app):

    • On Android and iOS
      • Select 'Profile' on the bottom of your screen and scroll until you see the section 'Segments.'
      • Select 'Local Legends' in the upper right
      • Select one of your Local Legend segments
      • On the upper right, select the 'i' with the circle around it (for Android) or the three ellipses (for iOS)
      • Select 'Yes, Leave'
      • Note if you choose to leave, your activities will not be counted towards a Local Legend achievement and it may take up to 24 hours for your achievements to be removed. If you'd like to join again in the future, only activities from the day you re-join will be counted.

  • Hello Gareth Butcher,

Much like learning a KOM or QOM achievement icon on a leaderboard, there can only be one Local Legend for a segment. The achievement is given to the athlete who has the most efforts first. Feel free to submit a support ticket so one of our agents can check for you. -N

  • I want to receive segment loss emails/notifications, but I do not want to receive local legend loss/gain emails.  There are way too many local legends that I do 3 times a week and other people do 3 times a week and we just keep trading local legend gain/loss all the time.  It completely dilutes the experience of anything meaningful and forces me to turn off email notifications for all segments.

  • Please split email notification preferences for KOM/QOMs from LCLs.

There are many local segments where riders leapfrog each other daily and those daily emails are getting annoying. But I do want an email when someone wins my (rare) KOM. For now I created an email filter to kill the LCL emails.

    Thanks.

  • Stuie Thomson - LL is based on the number of attempts of a segment over the last 90 days only.  Every day, after midnight (it is based on the time of day, not 24 hours from when you do it), any attempts 91 days before will drop off the tally.  If you had 100 attempts showing on a segment, that means there were at least 10 days in there that you did it more than once, and many more than that if there were some days you didn't do it at all, within the last 90 days.  It could just be that the day that dropped off the calendar was one of those days when you did it more than once.

  • After I uploaded a ride that features a certain segment, I can check the LL leaderboard (it exists and it has a leader) and it tells me that I have zero attempts in the last 90 days. For the segment that I just rode (and ride every few days). It is like this only for some segments. Is your database still incomplete or what might be the reason?

I reported that as a bug last week and after some discussion Strava understood and fixed that. Check again, I can see the correct numbers now.

  • Great if I didn't have to make every run public for this.

Could it not count all the matching runs, and give me the title if I have at least one matching public run?

That way I've consented to be public (once) and don't have to spam everyone with my commute which no one cares about
