  • Rather that demand some form of AI to determine who is using an ebike, I want to ask "can I stop being accused of riding one?"

I did a short ride today on a '94 stumpjumper - 2 miles at 6mph and yet still I'm being accused of being on an ebike. Why me? Is it a naive "maximum power output" threshold I'm triggering?

    https://www.strava.com/activities/5095678529

Trying to work out what is e-bike vs pedalled is going to be hard, but while I thought it was amusing the first time I was accused of being on a battery, it gets a bit repetitive after a while. I don't have an ebike, if you look at my time on any segment vs the value 8 years ago -it will have got worse.

If is just power, how about including: heart rate, history PR on the same climb. And maybe consider a journey with an average speed of 5.6mph isn't likely to be involving a motor

  • Improve accuracy of Estimated Best Efforts by including elevation as a factor

I was recently looking at a run upload that seemed suspicious. What caught my eye was that despite being a run of over 30 miles, the runner achieved elite-level best efforts in the 1k and 1mi distances. I considered flagging, but on further inspection of splits I discovered that every anomalous fast mile was performed over an elevation drop of 100-170 feet. While this made the run itself seem more likely genuine, it also showed that the best effort estimation does not discriminate based on grade. Best efforts can be an interesting way to represent a runner's strength when they don't have verified PRs, but they can be misleading too if a runner is hitting their best marks on massive downhills.

The easy solution might be to just not calculate best efforts on sections with negative grade beyond a certain threshold, but of course this would disfavor runners who regularly train in hilly regions. Alternatively, perhaps you could make use of the grade-adjusted pace tool you already have and translate GPS data to a flat effort estimation.

  • Can you PLEASE add segments and all of the segment achievements to E-bike rides?  I’ve been a paid subscriber for 2 years and it’s frustrating that I can’t see my segments!  Most of the time I’m not even worried about the leaderboard, but would like to view certain areas of the trail.  Seriously, E-bikes are riders too!  Why can’t we have our own leaderboards?!!!  Obviously this isn’t just my opinion - there are other posts mentioning the same thing!  In order to view segments we have to change our activity to ride instead of e-bike ride and then we get called out for messing up all of the regular riders achievements!

  • Melissa Thomson - E-bikes DO have segments with leaderboards.  You just need someone like yourself to make the segments.  Personally, I would be excited to be able to start from scratch and create new segments rather than have to deal with all of the terrible ones made by regular cyclists.  Segments are really easy to make and you can make then for exactly the sections of road/trail you want.  When you are looking the screen where it would show the segments, just click on the button "Create a New Segment" and make one or ten.

  • regarding KOMs and "Cups" (10th through 2nd).

FIRST: i've noticed that KOMs are NOT added to one's profile page if: A) they are shared; B) if the segment is flagged as dangerous.

    A) ... i suppose it could be like 'Highlander', and "There Can Be Only ONE!" (and, it's worth striving for the top top spot for sure ;-)... but otherwise, even if shared, it is ON the  LEADER BOARD, and, seems like the KOM (or Cup - more on this below) should be listed under one's profile (i track them to make intervals and efforts more fun).

B)... i understand the concern over publishing leader boards of dangerous cycling segments, but, the achievements should STILL APPEAR on one's profile page if one has been through the waiver process, OR, that KOM/CR was achieved PRIOR to whomever complained and flagged the segment (most often disgruntled riders, drivers, or others).  aside from 'strava stalkers' nobody would finding these on an individuals profile page, or, otherwise, the leader boards are still visible to those that sign the waiver, so, why wouldn't the achievement be available for my profile page?

Now, speaking of tracking segments to make training efforts more fun... it would be super if on my own profile, i could see which CUPS i had (10th -> 2nd), so i could design rides that included these segments as goals in a structure of my ride, WITHOUT having to track them otherwise, or, search back through my ride history... it could be private, or public... i don't care, but, i would like to have access to the segments where i am in the top 10 on leader boards.

    THANK YOU STRAVA TEAM!!

  • I did a quick search and did not see anything - forgive me if I missed it -

I would love to see a personal leaderboard of "best w/kg" on cycling segments.  This is because most PRs are wind-aided and pushing into a headwind would surely be interesting as your best w/kg may  not always allow for the best time.

  • Have you thought about creating an icon for segments when you get a Power (cycling) PB (so to account for headwinds when you don't get a time PB)

    cheers

  • Feature Request: Disavow Segment Result

    Background
A known bug (in Zwift) caused an error in data uploaded to Strava.  On one particular virtual ride I am shown going 28+mph on a virtual category 4 climb.  That put me in twelfth position out of 119337.  That is clearly bogus data.

I want the ability to mark a segment result as invalid.
This will allow me to mark just the two bogus segments of that one ride as being bogus, removing the bad data from the leaderboards.

The reason that is important is that I want to keep the ride data overall, but I do not want to take any credit for achievements I did not actually achieve.  I want to disavow any PRs based upon bad data.  The only way I can do this now is to flag my own ride, or make the ride private.  The ride, overall, was actually a nice ride.  There was just this one glitch (you can see it in the speed data) where my (virtual) speed is temporarily pegged.

An example of when I needed that was:  https://www.strava.com/activities/5134547039/segments/2817974374393545098

  • With the increasing popularity of e-bikes, segment achievements are becoming more and more meaningless for true athletes. Unless Strava does something to distinguish between genuine segment efforts on human powered bicycles and those using e-bikes, this app is becoming less relevant to those who helped make it great in the first place.

All too often, e-bike riders are uploading their activities as standard cycling activities instead of an e-bike ride. Of course there is a space for e-bike riders on Strava but more and more, regular riders are constantly getting alerts that an e-biker has taken their KOM. It's very disheartening for those who use the app as a training tool towards fitness improvements.

I appreciate that it will be very difficulat to design an app to detect between a genuine bike ride and one done on an e-bike, but I do have a suggestion that I feel is one that will help cut down on the number of incorrectly logged ride actitivities.....
The default ride category following immediate upload of a cycle activity should be switched to "e-bike". This way, riders who have genuinely ridden on a self-propelled bicycle can switch their activity accordingly. These riders, due to their dedication to fitness are more likely to log their activity correctly than the casual e-bike rider who either is not quite as tech savvy, can't be bothered or who just likes causing other cyclists anguish.

It's an interim measure that will resolve a lot of the frustration currently eperienced by both fitness cyclists and e-bike riders. It equates to less KOM loss chatter to self-powered cycle riders and less flagging of e-bike riders. A win win all round! I hope you agree and see to it that this change has mileage. Thank you.

  • I'd like to follow up on what a few other people have posted and suggest that Strava create an actual Trophy Case that includes all top ten finishes on segments. It'd be nice to know what segments one performs well on and could possibly compete for a KOM on. The current "Trophy Case" is more of a badge case for those engaging in a million challenges per month, which often times aren't much of a challenge at all. On the note, a feature allowing those wishing to not see the incredible amount of challenges flooding their feed should have a settings option to hide them. The emphasis put on badges and the silly local legends features and not on top ten finishes and overall performance is off-putting for most people I know.

Also, can Strava get with the times and add a direct messaging feature so those that are friends on the app can communicate directly without having to post a comment on each others activities. I feel like this is a massively overlooked flaw.

  • All too often, e-bike riders are uploading their activities as standard cycling activities instead of an e-bike ride.

In Strava settings under 'My Gear' there is the 'Add Bike' button. When clicked the 'Add a Bike' dialogue pops up, one of these fields is called 'Types' ... there is NO 'E-BIKE' option here! Only 'Road, Mountain, TT & Cross' are available to select from. I think Strava should have 'E' versions of these. So when an activity is uploaded using this bike then in, the 'Edit Activity' area the 'Sport' section would automatically be changed to 'E-Bike Ride' and would not have to be manually changed.

I think this would reduce those ebike riders who have no idea or don't know how to change/select their activities 'Sport' type.

Personally, I am using a Garmin Edge 830, under your Activity Profiles you can set the Default Ride Type to 'eBike' and when an activity is uploaded to Strava its already set as an 'E-Bike Ride'

  • Can you make live segments available for the ebike category. I pay extra money for access to this feature and I keep waiting for it to be available.

This was mentioned above and I totally agree. I emailed Strava about this issue a few days ago, this is their reply:

Thanks for writing in Nic about E-Bike activities. Since E-Bikes are not the same as standard bikes they cannot compete against other cyclist on our 'ride segment leaderboards'. At this moment in time, we do not have live segments for E-Bike specific rides.

We are still working on improving our E-Bike activity type and appreciate your feedback.

    And I replied back with:

I understand this. On my Garmin device, I have my default activity type set to ebike which uploads every ride to Strava as an ebike ride. Now only ebike specific segments are shown and I am only competing with other ebike riders, not non-ebike cyclists.

I read an article back from July 2015 which is titled "Strava and Garmin introduce on-device Live Segments for Edge series". This is approx around 6 years ago! Which is around the time e-bikes were starting to take off.

So, given that we're talking approx 6 years ago that you introduced live segments I am really surprised that you use the words, "At this moment in time.." and "We are still working on improving our E-Bike activity type". You've really got to wonder how much time does Srava need to make live segments work for e-bikes??

It can't be too difficult behind the scenes to get this working as rides tagged as ebike already have their own separate segments anyway.

After that Strava replied by leading me to this "Improved Community Forum" area. So that's were I am sharing my feedback.

  • Hi,

I still find there is only partial support for people who walk. Usually, there is an option for choosing "Run" or "Swim" but not "Walk".

I have a major problem with my heart, and whilst I enjoy all the Strava Leaderboards, data etc. I would like to see "Walking" as an option or filter everywhere that "Running" and "Swimming" appear.

The present feature-set feels like discrimination against all people who can walk but not run or swim.

    Thank you.

  • After the latest update the "View Your Clubs' Activities" drop down menu is all the way at the bottom, who came up with this "improvement"? Step back. It takes more clicks just to get to Leaderboards. Why not just put all Clubs' Leaderboards in one view chart.

Also, it would be great to have Following or Followers Clubs set up as default Club.

  • 'Exclude activity from my achievements' option

The other day Polar watch recorded a run with some wack GPS  instead of a road run it looks like a did some mountain summits instead.

I did do the “report GPS problem” thing for this run (i actually had to ask a friend, it was not in the most discoverable place) but this doesn't seem to do anything other than send feedback.

However, it would be great to have a check/switch to “exclude gps from activity” or (even better) “exclude activity data from my achievements” because I want the HR data (for training monitoring purposes) but don’t want to have a PR for something I didn’t do.

  • Strava please create a view to allow us to see where we are currently ranked on Segments.

I imagine the existing 'Segment Search' table with "KOM, Best Effort, Leaderboard Rank" added to the table, with the ability to search by your current rank or a range, ability to search by time difference from KOM, etc.

This concept is raised in some form several times in this thread and would greatly improve the user experience with Segments and best efforts. It can help people find segments to target for the KOM or for personal improvement.

  • I'm coming back from a long absence from running, and it will take ages for me to get even close to my previous PBs / achievements. And I may never be that fast again.

To stay motivated, I would like to be able to be able to set a time frame and get achievements within that, for example be notified of a best time within the last 12 months.

Otherwise I will never get a PB / achievement again, which I admit is a bit demotivating.

    Thanks!

  • I often see segments matching in activities that were not actually ridden in that ride. An example would be a single track MTB trail adjacent to a roadway that is matching when I took the road surface. I would like the ability to remove these unridden segments from my ride so that when I look at the MTB segment, I can see my best results where I was actually on that segment.

  • Hi Alex Ryback! Thank you for your feedback on segment matching and your suggestion on sorting your top times by the bikes you've added to your profile. I will definitely pass along that suggestion to our Product Team for future consideration!

In regard to your feedback on segment matching, this is typically caused by the flexibility we include within our segment matching algorithm that accounts for GPS drift that happens from time to time. However, this can also cause inaccurate segment matching in cases where two segments are located closely together. Please check out our KB article for more information on this: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918187-Segment-Matching-Issues. I hope that helps!

  • Hi Laura Flint! Thanks for your feedback on adding an option for our users to remove inaccurate best efforts that are caused by poor GPS data. I'll share your suggestion with our Product Team for future improvements. In the meantime, I went ahead and created a support ticket for you so that we can take a look at the activity in question and remove the recent inaccurate best efforts you mentioned. Thanks!

  • Rowing QOM/KOMs and leaderboards are useless without a boat category. Rowing boat sizes range from 8 person to a single, so if you get a fast race time in a single it’s meaningless if someone else goes for a paddle in an 8. And on segment leaderboards there is no way to tell what size boat. If there was a way to designate boat categories on activities this would solve the problem.

    1

  • Carey Connell Thank you for your feedback regarding the leaderboards for rowing segments! It certainly could be useful to sort the leaderboards on rowing segments based on the type of boat used in the activity. While we cannot promise immediate changes, I am sharing your feedback with our Product Team for consideration in our roadmap.

  • Strava mistakenly calculates elevation gain, when track was not recorded (for example during a chairlift use).

And the same  problems is with achievements, why do you calculate achievements on climbs which didn't happen ??

  • I am not a high performing athlete but I like to run and I like to beat my records. Last year during lockdown I ran more than usual and smashed all my records, now it's a year later, my performance has dropped and I can't beat those records. I would really like it if there were yearly achievements, like "fastest 5K of 2021", fastest mile etc. It would just help a bit with motivation to know that although I'm not as fast as last year I am at my peak for this year.

  • I would like to see the total number of KOMs (QOMs or CRs) each person has, so not by counting it myself, but through a number in the right top corner under > Segments > KOMs/CRs. It will allow me to see the total # of KOMs at a glance.

The reason that is important: by this, the App will be more attractive and the competitive part will only be greater!

  • I would like to filter in > Explore > Segment Search in more detail by steepness (%), length, and maybe average speed. It will allow me to find certain types of Segments much easier.

The reason that is important: by this, the App will be more attractive and the competitive part will only be greater (as you could find Segments which are doable or at least worth trying it)!

  • I am to add some comment to several important above comments.

E-bikes, electric scooters are somehow present on kom's. It shall be monitored by admin or algorithms, however, it can be controlled by users as well. As I see someone going on bike route in the city up to 83kmh where it is impossible to ride on flat with a such speed, such person/record shall be changed to e-users or normally moved to "abnormal" records. It is also advisable to distinquish solo and group records.

I am observing some records where detailed information of such segment are proven to be abnormal for real user - for instance flat speed within various curves unable to sustain , flat heart rate with a rising speed and power. Users with weight of 125kg faster on 10-15 degrees climb /faster by 30 sec on 2.5 min segment/ are not likely to achieve such time.

I suggest to confirm records validity in terms of more sensors added, there is a specific characteristic of real and ebike/scooter user. We as users can legitimate such record with props/ record kudos.

  • Development ideas for KOMs/CRs (something has been mentioned partially)

    KOMs/CRs

This functionality can be found behind one's profile. Would it be possible to add another tab that would show performances on segments where one has entered TOP 100 (not exactly KOM but on the way there, it is still an achievement!). This way these performances would be easy to find (for example I am second on one segment, would be nice to be able to access it fast) and even motivate oneself to set a better goal (head for the KOM) via My Goals functionality. Here how I see this functionality:

    - TOP 100 -tab behind Profile (this could be for subscribers only -> another reason to join Strava)

    - When tab selected, display similar tiles as in KOM/CR except with more details (more info below) and possible filters and sorting (more info below)

    - More details: details of my ride, my ranking, time, power and the info of the person one rank higher than me, his name, time and power and a link to create a goal (like in My Goal) for this segment (later you maybe could add chance in % of beating the guy ahead of me on my absolutely best day based on power curve information and maybe something else too like past performances, and maybe later even what would it take to reach KOM), also information if I have set a goal for this segment in the future.

    - Possible filters and sorting: cycling and running separately, sorting by rank on different segments

    - Not to compete with TOP 10, maybe there could be two tabs, one for TOP 10 and another for TOP 100 (top 100 would allow more planning/goal setting and make it more exciting as you climb the ranking and is generally easier to enter).

I think these features would motivate people to subscribe, set goals, reach goals and ride/run even more!

  • Improvements to Strava KOM/QOM segment competition.

I would like to propose there be some form of competition before a user can achieve KOM/QOM status. Something like a minimum of 3-5 users competing on a segment BEFORE a crown is awarded to the fastest time. This will enhance the user experience with riders knowing they have to compete to get their crown, and will weed out the sandbaggers creating frivolous segments.

Currently in Strava a rider can simply create a segment and become the KOM/QOM champion.

This is not ideal: it cheapens the KOM/QOM experience with users knowing they can simply create a segment that no one has ridden and instantly become the champ with no competition.

This is also leading to users creating circuitous segments to increase their own KOM/QOM numbers, further eroding the spirit of the KOM/QOM challenge.

Let’s agree, it’s kinda bogus for people to be racking up KOM/QOM’s without any competition.

This simple change will elevate the Strava experience, and bring the friendly competition of the KOM/QOM challenge to a higher, more prestigious level for all Strava users.
