  • Hi, Strava!

I want to be able to tell whether a PR has been scored on a long-established segment (for which I may have many results and where achieving a new PR is hard) or something recently created (where I would have few results and a PR is more achievable, but less valuable).

I suggest that this could be supported simply by displaying on a ride's Segments page the date of creation of each segment.

This would be valuable for spotting real, long term trends.

  •  rankings; full of bad activities or straight up cheaters

Why isn't there anybody able and trusted to remove those from rankings?

It's very bad having to see those kind of 'results' in the rankings from  the beginning of the month and staying there without being removed, despite messages and flagging.

  • This might be a weird request for you all: I would like a switch somewhere (preferably on my gear) which makes me refrain from grabbing the KOM on a section. I don't want XOMs!

Skip to the conclusion if you don't feel like reading.

    MOTIVATION

The situation is as follows: Throughout my whole life I did explosive sports (basketball, martial arts). I'm tall too (close to 2m), because of this "mix" I was almost 120 kg at my fittest. Alongside that I've been running and road cycling until my late 20s, when I stopped running due to knee issues and eventually also had to sell my Pinarello because of constant problems in my upper back/neck. And then you're stuck: No more sports left.

I'm cutting the story short here, but a few years ago, I had gotten quite chubby and I wasn't enjoying it. Then I switched work to a city 30 km away, and the company has a shower for employees. Just before that, I had gotten into recumbent riding and suddenly I had a motivation to do so, too.

Since then my life has changed: My car often goes untouched for weeks, my sheds are full of cargobikes, open recumbents and faired recumbents (velomobiles), and I've started to challenge myself: How far can I commute by bike within a reasonable amount of time? It's also challenging which of the bikes is the fastest on a certain section: The velomobile is heavy, uphill and acceleration are hard (even though I have a 2 kilowatt sprint again); in cities my open high racer is a LOT faster, because it's so light and agile. In cold weather and/or into a headwind, the velomobile is fantastic; speed on a 7 bft. tailwind is maybe 30% higher than it is in the other direction, into a 7 bft. headwind. Running a flat and then changing a tube (max. 10 minutes of work on the velomobile) is actually noticeable in the travel time on an 80 km commute, that's how consistent the travel time is in that thing. By the way: yes, I have been passed in the velomobile, by roadies on a tailwind, haha. It's possible when the windspeed in gusts is higher than your own speed, so from around 5 bft.

Since I'm back on my A-game now, I have become something that isn't too common: A recumbent rider that is under 40 and that can put out over 300W. The result on the high racer is constant KOMs when I push it hard. Even though I don't have segments in display on my Wahoo, I average over 40 km/h on commutes every now and then and I've had rides with as much as 15 in one run.

Still, it's a bike, not a velomobile. And, as much as I liked it when I was a "roadie", I like to compete with the rest of the rare breed of fast recumbent cyclists and compare segments, so I leave some hard and max effort rides open for everyone to view. And then I get flagged. A LOT. So much that I guess Strava employees know me by name now; they switch my rides back without question, and block them from being flagged again.

The velomobile? I ride that on bike mode too, but leave those rides "followers only". Reason to do so is the fact that I want to compare segments afterwards between different bikes: I want to see what are the fast bits and what are the slow bits of my ride, to select the right bike under the right circumstances, optimize my route and dose my power better. The velomobile mode, however, uses it's own segments, there's not so much of us around yet so it's quite empty, and if you create too much segments you're banned from creating new segments. That plus having to switch the ride from sport "Ride" to "Velomobile Ride" afterwards are annoying. Sometimes I also ride speed pedelec too (because 800km/week is a bit much, haha); if I want to track those rides I'd have to administer another set of segments. And if we make it completely fair, I'm missing a Mountainbike Ride too, and a Gravelbike Ride, and a Cargobike Ride: my cargobike is 46 kg, unassisted, and has the aerodynamic design of a house, but I still managed to grab a 5th place on momentum and explosive power, and got flagged for it (probably by the roadie who tried to keep up during that burst, haha).

    CONCLUSION

All of the above, my sporty friends, is my motivation to request a switch, preferably on my gear or even on my complete account, to refrain from having KOMs, but to be in the public leaderboards.

Since we have a climate to fix, there's nothing wrong with showing the public that there's actually faster ways of traveling on human power than a road bike. Of course, that road bike has it's charm and I even miss it every now and then, but make a little room for the weird, faster kid on the block too. On that note: GCN has actually set a great example :-)

If you managed up till here: Sorry about the longread!

  • In the last few hours I've had 4 Activities flagged as "in a vehicle".  None was in a vehicle (for any part). For 2 of the Activities the highest average speeds for Segments were 22 and 24 mph.  Has anyone else noticed something similar ? Maybe another user is being mischievous - if the flags are auto-generated there's something wrong when Segment speeds of 22 mph trigger a flag.

  • perhaps the lack of movement from strava on tracking top ten efforts in a personal tab is because a LOT of these details (and many more) are available on the VeloViewer app (powered by Strava)…?

but still, nothing on the “Strava” app… (but they own the data!!)

also, what about these other users that are constantly riding (EVERYDAY!!) ebikes on segments without properly indicating? even though they get flagged, or even called out socially, or, specific complaints WITH BACKUP sent to strava, these culprits continue to deteriorate our Strava experience among good friends and team mates.

then there’s the hackers that don’t actually have profiles or feeds, yet the show up on leaderboards… how’s is that even possible without Strava responding?

    hmm…

love strava, mostly… but irritating the leadership can’t solve some simple algorithms to pick these culprits.m, or, confirm data they already have the process for, into a simple accessible tab with a premium subscription.

  • filtering on 'full leaderboard' still doesn't work for many months.

when i try to filter 'people i'm following' and choose 'today' or 'this week' or 'this month' - the list is empty, however these ppl did that segment (today or this week or month).

It only shows something if i choose 'this year' or 'all-time'

  • Display only segments on the current route in the route planner (Snap segments to route)

During route planning I am often interested to see segments that lie on my route I could go for.
Unfortunately the planning tool currently only displays some random selection of segments in the visible area. It takes ages to zoom in/out, move the region to get some segments displayed I can look at further -- namely those that lie on my planned route; and not "5 kms away from it, downhill and in the wrong direction".
It would be a simple to implement filter that one could turn on with a checkbox to display only those.

  • Night Time Achievements - PoDs (Prince[sses] of Darkness)

I want night-time achievements for fastest segments - XoMs but for sections that start an hour after sunset and complete an hour before sunrise... ie it's dark and it's harder.  Maths to calculate this is pretty easy with some basic assumptions.
And a nice achievement symbol of a crown on a crescent moon. Thank you.

It will allow more motivation through the winter months -- now it's late autumn in the Northern hemisphere and time on the bike is restricted. But is still fun in a different way. Times are always likely to be slower but competetive with everyone else in the dark.

I appreciate some lights are now super bright but still cast shadows and even setting off needs more thought in the darker evenings and nights.

Who else thinks this is a good idea and wants a PoD on their ride stats?

  • Strava already knows whether it was a morning, lunch, afternoon, evening and night ride by using your time of day in your location.... My garmin knows to switch to night mode on its display. So that tech is already in place. Secondly, no segment changes need be made. The split is done with data on this end, not on the metric recording units. That same indicator that lets Strava know that it was at night, would flag the segments as a night ride.

  • Thanks for the comments Gavin D. (who gets it) and Mike N. (who says "waste of electrons" in a lot of feedback)... the PoD idea is purely a different subset of fastest ... like "By Age" or "By Weight" -- it's just a holistic "By Night Time" generic.  XoM will always be the real-deal but there are viable alternatives.

The Strava side is very simple maths (assuming a fairly round earth and some basic trig based on lat/long).  It's optionally up to the manufacturers via the Strava SDK to determine if they include it as a live in-segment thing (that I don't use, but appreciate others do). Just like not all Garmin's support starred segments for live in-segment chasing.  I hadn't even thought of that, but it's just like not all my segments come up at ride-time, only the uphill starred ones.

  • @William O.  I disagree.  KOMs are usually faster than QOMs as men are physically stronger than women in a lot of circumstances.  That isn't sexist it's fact and nature haha.  Why do you think men aren't allowed to compete in women's sporting events?  It is unfair.  It is a great achievement for a woman to beat all men and having a KOM to display that would be sweet.

  • Really like the "Your year in sport" stats summary, very well designed and satisfying to review! One improvement suggestion would be to state the elevation and distance in terrestrial terms to give them context, i.e. "You climbed a total of 18,000m, that's equivalent to climbing Everest twice" or "You ran a total of 1,500 km, that's like running from Sydney to Adelaide"

If you want to implement this, maybe you can give me a free subscription as payment :)

  • Just a thought about rides vs virtual rides.  It would be nice to see in "mystats", and other places, a different icon and colors listing virtual ride miles/output info etc next to the regular bicycle icon that is already given.  I know you can see some of what I am talking about when you look at the training log, but would love to see directly in all other outputs.  Example in a bar graph different colors showing distances ridden or run etc.  Again, just a suggestion - Love Strava Thanks

  • Thomas Larsen - the simplest thing would be to crop the activity to remove the part that was in a vehicle

    0
    Azioni per commenti Permalink
  • Thomas Larsen - All you have to do is open the activity and use the "crop" feature.  In the app, if you click on the activity, then click on the three dots in the top right of the screen, then select "crop activity".  Follow instructions in there to cut out the portion in the vehicle and all is good.

  • Thomas Larsen

Sorry to hear about the crash.

Just crop the ride and that will remove the KOMs.

In some cases it might be handy to have the ability to remove individual KOMs, but in this case a simple crop should suffice as they are all at the end of the ride.

  • Thomas Larsen:  The best way I know to delete segments is to crop the recorded activity.
In the Strava Web UI, go to the activity and look for the three dots at the bottom of the box on the left-hand side.  Click on that; one of the options will be "Crop".  You should be able to trim off the tail end of the activity.  Good luck!

  • on the segment leader board, particularly on the 'today' leader board it would be cool if along with the date you put the time of day.   there are days when winds change significantly and the morning riders have a much different experience than the afternoon riders had on the same segment on the same day.

  • Hi Strava Support. Hi Jojo

There is already a lot of cheated rides in my area.

I wanna flag them all but flag limit activated and I can't flag any more.

The flag limit block me to do right action for segment leaderboards.

    Please solve the problem immediately.

    Best regards...

  • Extend feature 'my segments'

I would like to see an additional column to the feature 'my segments' with my classification on that segment. Now you only can see you're PR, but not if you are 13th or 99th on the segment.

Furthermore i would like to see that there will be added on option to filter in the feature 'my segments'. So that you can filter on for example distance or My PR.

  • I'd like to follow on what Crispin H posted above. I'd like to have night time segments vs day time segments. Down here in summer we ride night times as well, and it would be fun to be able to compete on segments at night and not against the day time riders who will almost always be faster due to better visibility. So a night version of the segment vs a daylight version.

Also I'd like the ability to see my gear (bike) I rode on segment leaderboards. We already log the bike we rode, so it would be nice to compare stats between eg an XC bike and a Trail bike/ebike, just based on the gear chosen.

  • as as a mountain biker, night time segments would be awesome -especially as here in the UK every journey to the woods after 5pm is with a head torch.

working out when sun sets for a given (lat, long) point is a well-known piece of maths; for MTB trails it'd give you a top ten list to chase at night where your inevitably slower than daytime once the trail gets technical.

for people who haven't tried night-time MTB riding yet -have a go! In the northern hemisphere the time is right, and it makes short local trails exciting little adventures.

  • I run with a stroller. Could you add that as a category (along with running, walking etc)? And it would also be super fancy (and rewarding) if it would be possible to specify the weight of the stroller (including children, groceries, dogs and what not).

    Thanks!

Edit: sorry if this is not the correct thread.

  • I don't know if the idea has already been submitted or not. During a training run with friends, we were taking 2-3 segments and we had this thought.
Why should we fight for segments against people who are not in the same category as us? And why should we set unattainable records for some people?

As we continued our race we had this thought. In all sports, even running, competitions are done by level. But not yet on Strava.

So an idea came to us. Why not make the system similar to what we see in many video games. Rankings by category (Diamond 1, Diamond 2 [...], Bronze 1, Bronze 2) with a proper language that Strava would create. Records/segments that also belong to these categories. Category changes according to our monthly, quarterly or yearly statistics and our records in competition.
This would probably allow us to grow more via the application by setting goals that correspond to us and that are not at the level of the best runner in our region.
Of course, we could also keep the "all time record" side. But I think that a development of this kind of functionality could allow many of us to find an additional interest in running virtually with/against each other.

Feel free to tell me what you think about it and if you have other ideas to add, I'm interested :).

  • Just thought of something that is useful for all commuters (like me): I'm trying to find the most efficient route between two places. For this, it would be very useful to see my average cruise speed. For example, today I cycled to work and my average speed was 38.8 km/h, but I saw it well above 40 km/h on a number of sections. Whether this was a fast route or not however, depends very much on the weather conditions (temperature, wind etc.).

I know that I was cruising between 48 and 50 km/h a good number of times, but it would be valuable to see my average cruise speed (based on a number of variables, f.e. "cruise speed is achieved on straight sections after x seconds").

If I ride a different route this afternoon, and manage 37.5 km/h average but my cruise speed is only 42 km/h, it's possible to make a good estimation of what route is more efficient, especially if my average power is also significantly lower than it was on the ride to work in the morning.

Quite useful information: It can tell me to choose a longer but more efficient route if I'm late but feeling very strong, or a longer but more efficient route when I'm feeling particularly spent (to avoid acceleration).

  • Can you PLEASE add segments and all of the segment achievements to E-bike rides?  I’ve been a paid subscriber for 2 years and it’s frustrating that I can’t see my segments!  Most of the time I’m not even worried about the leaderboard, but would like to view certain areas of the trail.  Seriously, E-bikes are riders too!  Why can’t we have our own leaderboards?!!!  Obviously this isn’t just my opinion - there are other posts mentioning the same thing!  In order to view segments we have to change our activity to ride instead of e-bike ride and then we get called out for messing up all of the regular riders achievements!
