  • Thank you for your great work.  I find that there are running segments where people were bike riding, beating world records; or bike segments where people were in their cars and forgot to turn off their Strava recording, again beating world records at 90 bpm or at 100 watts, probably without being aware, and nothing happens.  There are also e-bikers breaking records or setting times in the same leaderboards as users of non-e-bikes.

This unnecessary noise makes segments less useful, harder to read or interpret, and takes away unnecessarily from Strava.

I value the community-driven spirit Strava aims for. That seems to work pretty well to share rides, share challenges, keep accountability, and even marketing.  But flagging other people's mistakes does not seem to be a highlight of a community-driven spirit. Besides, there are so many mistaken activities in Strava, it would take ages for ordinary users like me, to flag those, and I find it hard to believe that Strava users will be motivated to do that long enough to filter thoroughly and sufficiently the Strava database.

Using algorithms -or even artificial intelligence if necessary-, should be enough to improve this. The system detects a mistake automatically, corrects it automatically or provides suggestions and-or instructions to the user on how to fix the problem, and allows the user to give feedback in case the person has a valid argument to oppose or even reverse, the change.  That way, Strava can keep the positive things about being a community-driven service.

Could you please give this some serious consideration?

  • I think that the difference is if you are a paying subscriber vs free. Leaderboard features (for subscribers) are described here: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917447-My-Segment-Results?mobile_site=true

  • At the start of the 1st lockdown I decided to run a minimum of 5k every day. I carried on after lockdown ended and stopped after 200 days. My fitness score dropped off during this period. Any bike ride I fitted in seemed to up the score disproportionately so I decided that either I didn't understand how it worked, or I had configured something wrong, or it just wasn't very good. Unless running every day makes your fitness worse. Anyway I'm ignoring it.

  • I would like to see ranking by demo group, the intersection of the three demographics you already track: gender, weight class, age group.

I am more interested (more motivated) in knowing how I rank against people similar to me.  When I look at my weight class, that can contain wide range of ages and vice versa.  These can influence performance strongly.  You already have all the data, just do intersection.  I tried to write and app to do this but your API won't let me pull this off.  Please consider adding this simple change.  If you agree, please vote up this post.

  • If one has a reasonable doubt that a KOM is real (ex having used Ebike or so) can you suggest strava to review and validate?

  • I run in a very mixed group- both in age and gender- would there ever be an option to include Age/Gender %- so we can compare efforts across these groups- it would help with inclusivity and allow a whole new area of achievement. This would perhaps be more meaningful- especially to runners than body weight!

  • Is there a way to view an overview in your club - not just a leaderboard of which would be nice to include other activities like rowing and paddling and swimming and not just running and cycling. As currently only having these two on the leaderboard is excluding a lot of my members. :-(

Secondly, I would like to see an overview of all members - a Pie chart if you will of all the activities, hours and distance done for all members collectively.

Please let me know if this can be done or not?

  • Could you please either add "5 miles" to the list of All-Time PRs or add a custom button so users can add their own custom distances? 5 miles is a common race distance and having run a course record, I’d love to include the distance.

  • Additional support for Activity Type = Nordic Skiing.

Would you add a way to denote if the Nordic Skiing activity is Skate or Classic when uploading/updating an activity?

Would you also add a filter when searching activities to allow a search for Skate vs Classic when activity type = Nordic Skiing.

Would you also allow a filter on Nordic Skiing leader boards for Skate vs Classic.

Would you also allow filtering in Nordic Ski groups to Nordic Skiing, Roller Skiing type of activities if the Group owner so desired this type filtering.

    Thank you for your consideration.

  • The more you ride and the better you perform the harder it is to have any achievements. Strava should award plaques if you beat a top 10 time on the leaderboard even if it is your 4th best effort on that segment.

For example. Suppose I have a KOM of 1:00 on a segment and two other times of 1:01 & 1:02 already logged in Strava. If I get a 1:03 today on a ride I will not be awarded any trophies even if my time is better than the 10th fastest time on the leaderboard.

it would be a nice way to reward you for extra efforts, esp in areas where there are not a whole lot of segments to ride.

    thanks,

    Chris

  • Backing this idea and adding more info:

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/360073560211/comments/360014150892

I want to be able to see my segment efforts ranked by average power.

It will allow me to see those segments which I have completed with hardest effort somewhat negating the effects of weather and riding in a group or not. (Note thatriding at high power whilst in a group / with a following wind will still be beneficial as the segment will be finished quicker meaning the high power will have to be held for a shorter duration).

The reason that is important is because the wind direction on a given day or whether I rode in a group or not can have a massive bearing on the power / effort required.

When I do a hard effort in a segment into the wind there is almost no chance it will ever appear at the top of my best times despite being the hardest effort and that is not ok because it was a best "effort" if not best time (which may have been achieved with a 30 mph tailwind).

This is important to me because I'd like an easy way to view my best (hardest) efforts in a segment, not necessarily my fastest.

I think an option to rank my own efforts (everybodys efforts?) by power would be great because then I could see my hardest efforts irrespective of external factors. This is important to me because I'd like to be able to track power improvements over segments.

  • After the latest update the "View Your Clubs' Activities" drop down menu is all the way at the bottom, who came up with this "improvement"? Step back. It takes more clicks just to get to Leaderboards. Why not just put all Clubs' Leaderboards in one view chart.

Also, it would be great to have Following or Followers Clubs set up as default Club.

  • Hi Alex Ryback! Thank you for your feedback on segment matching and your suggestion on sorting your top times by the bikes you've added to your profile. I will definitely pass along that suggestion to our Product Team for future consideration!

In regard to your feedback on segment matching, this is typically caused by the flexibility we include within our segment matching algorithm that accounts for GPS drift that happens from time to time. However, this can also cause inaccurate segment matching in cases where two segments are located closely together. Please check out our KB article for more information on this: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216918187-Segment-Matching-Issues. I hope that helps!

  • Carey Connell Thank you for your feedback regarding the leaderboards for rowing segments! It certainly could be useful to sort the leaderboards on rowing segments based on the type of boat used in the activity. While we cannot promise immediate changes, I am sharing your feedback with our Product Team for consideration in our roadmap.

  • I am to add some comment to several important above comments.

E-bikes, electric scooters are somehow present on kom's. It shall be monitored by admin or algorithms, however, it can be controlled by users as well. As I see someone going on bike route in the city up to 83kmh where it is impossible to ride on flat with a such speed, such person/record shall be changed to e-users or normally moved to "abnormal" records. It is also advisable to distinquish solo and group records.

I am observing some records where detailed information of such segment are proven to be abnormal for real user - for instance flat speed within various curves unable to sustain , flat heart rate with a rising speed and power. Users with weight of 125kg faster on 10-15 degrees climb /faster by 30 sec on 2.5 min segment/ are not likely to achieve such time.

I suggest to confirm records validity in terms of more sensors added, there is a specific characteristic of real and ebike/scooter user. We as users can legitimate such record with props/ record kudos.

  • Development ideas for KOMs/CRs (something has been mentioned partially)

    KOMs/CRs

This functionality can be found behind one's profile. Would it be possible to add another tab that would show performances on segments where one has entered TOP 100 (not exactly KOM but on the way there, it is still an achievement!). This way these performances would be easy to find (for example I am second on one segment, would be nice to be able to access it fast) and even motivate oneself to set a better goal (head for the KOM) via My Goals functionality. Here how I see this functionality:

    - TOP 100 -tab behind Profile (this could be for subscribers only -> another reason to join Strava)

    - When tab selected, display similar tiles as in KOM/CR except with more details (more info below) and possible filters and sorting (more info below)

    - More details: details of my ride, my ranking, time, power and the info of the person one rank higher than me, his name, time and power and a link to create a goal (like in My Goal) for this segment (later you maybe could add chance in % of beating the guy ahead of me on my absolutely best day based on power curve information and maybe something else too like past performances, and maybe later even what would it take to reach KOM), also information if I have set a goal for this segment in the future.

    - Possible filters and sorting: cycling and running separately, sorting by rank on different segments

    - Not to compete with TOP 10, maybe there could be two tabs, one for TOP 10 and another for TOP 100 (top 100 would allow more planning/goal setting and make it more exciting as you climb the ranking and is generally easier to enter).

I think these features would motivate people to subscribe, set goals, reach goals and ride/run even more!

  • Situation: I wanted to reach out about an alarming, and aggressively targeted situation happening to one of my cyclist friends who is a woman of transgender experience. During her transition, and changing her gender on the app, it seems that her rides and segment crowns have been reported and flagged.

Why this is important: I can't imagine this is the first time such bullying and targeting has happened to riders on this app, and I'm hoping we can use data to better protect and be allies for these important community members, rather than allow behaviors that push them away from an activity which we all derive great community and enjoyment. Not only do many cyclists of trans experience go through immense stress simply breathing in this world, but now they are forced to handle the stress of an app blocking them. An app, that can create and support positive movement.

What I think could help: if Strava technology can recognize that their was a recent change in gender, a tool/code can be put in place to immediately address or notify the Strava team if there is a mass (or any) amount of flagging taking place on their account. The reason this is important is to prevent bullying and create a smoother, supportive transition. I must also note in the design of this feature to bring in other opinions beside my own (as I am a cis white woman).

I would be certain Strava and it’s progressive and inclusive culture, is working on some sort of code or way to make this situation much better for our trans sports community. Thank you for helping!

  • Hi Brian Fessenden - I agree with the concept that a XOM is worth more if more athletes have attempted the Segment.  Maybe this could be reflected with a "Gold" XOM if the Segment has been attempted by at least 1000 people, "Silver" if between 100 and 1000, "Bronze" if between 10 and 100 and "Plastic" if less than 10 ?

  • Hi, I have a suggestion for you.

I want to see, when biking or running, which segments that are new to me with some visual indicator. The reason that is important is because it helps distinguishing between a new segment (first time) vs. those that I did in the past but didn't get any achievements in this activity.

  • It’s a straight forward question: do you think the Strava KOM/QOM activity is a competition? If you answer yes (as I would) then it doesn’t make sense to be able to get a KOM/QOM crown by simply creating a segment that only you have ridden.

  • @Tantetan B. - I just posted requesting something similar. I was nearly killed riding. My 12 years of data I want to keep but want to see how I am improving. Maybe we’ll get someone at Strava to consider it. Good luck on your return!

  • Hi Amanda P.: If would strongly agree with you if she is harassed by bad comments in this regard. But the flagging I don't see as bullying as in sports born men mostly have clear advantages in muscle mass than born women and they have that advantage still years after the transition. Of course something has to be done so your friend can carry on competing in leaderboards. But that shouldn't be in the protected leaderboards for born women as that would by highly unfair. I don't have any other suggestion than Strava making a third category besides men and women.

  • Hi, Strava!

I want to be able to tell whether a PR has been scored on a long-established segment (for which I may have many results and where achieving a new PR is hard) or something recently created (where I would have few results and a PR is more achievable, but less valuable).

I suggest that this could be supported simply by displaying on a ride's Segments page the date of creation of each segment.

This would be valuable for spotting real, long term trends.

  •  rankings; full of bad activities or straight up cheaters

Why isn't there anybody able and trusted to remove those from rankings?

It's very bad having to see those kind of 'results' in the rankings from  the beginning of the month and staying there without being removed, despite messages and flagging.

  • This might be a weird request for you all: I would like a switch somewhere (preferably on my gear) which makes me refrain from grabbing the KOM on a section. I don't want XOMs!

Skip to the conclusion if you don't feel like reading.

    MOTIVATION

The situation is as follows: Throughout my whole life I did explosive sports (basketball, martial arts). I'm tall too (close to 2m), because of this "mix" I was almost 120 kg at my fittest. Alongside that I've been running and road cycling until my late 20s, when I stopped running due to knee issues and eventually also had to sell my Pinarello because of constant problems in my upper back/neck. And then you're stuck: No more sports left.

I'm cutting the story short here, but a few years ago, I had gotten quite chubby and I wasn't enjoying it. Then I switched work to a city 30 km away, and the company has a shower for employees. Just before that, I had gotten into recumbent riding and suddenly I had a motivation to do so, too.

Since then my life has changed: My car often goes untouched for weeks, my sheds are full of cargobikes, open recumbents and faired recumbents (velomobiles), and I've started to challenge myself: How far can I commute by bike within a reasonable amount of time? It's also challenging which of the bikes is the fastest on a certain section: The velomobile is heavy, uphill and acceleration are hard (even though I have a 2 kilowatt sprint again); in cities my open high racer is a LOT faster, because it's so light and agile. In cold weather and/or into a headwind, the velomobile is fantastic; speed on a 7 bft. tailwind is maybe 30% higher than it is in the other direction, into a 7 bft. headwind. Running a flat and then changing a tube (max. 10 minutes of work on the velomobile) is actually noticeable in the travel time on an 80 km commute, that's how consistent the travel time is in that thing. By the way: yes, I have been passed in the velomobile, by roadies on a tailwind, haha. It's possible when the windspeed in gusts is higher than your own speed, so from around 5 bft.

Since I'm back on my A-game now, I have become something that isn't too common: A recumbent rider that is under 40 and that can put out over 300W. The result on the high racer is constant KOMs when I push it hard. Even though I don't have segments in display on my Wahoo, I average over 40 km/h on commutes every now and then and I've had rides with as much as 15 in one run.

Still, it's a bike, not a velomobile. And, as much as I liked it when I was a "roadie", I like to compete with the rest of the rare breed of fast recumbent cyclists and compare segments, so I leave some hard and max effort rides open for everyone to view. And then I get flagged. A LOT. So much that I guess Strava employees know me by name now; they switch my rides back without question, and block them from being flagged again.

The velomobile? I ride that on bike mode too, but leave those rides "followers only". Reason to do so is the fact that I want to compare segments afterwards between different bikes: I want to see what are the fast bits and what are the slow bits of my ride, to select the right bike under the right circumstances, optimize my route and dose my power better. The velomobile mode, however, uses it's own segments, there's not so much of us around yet so it's quite empty, and if you create too much segments you're banned from creating new segments. That plus having to switch the ride from sport "Ride" to "Velomobile Ride" afterwards are annoying. Sometimes I also ride speed pedelec too (because 800km/week is a bit much, haha); if I want to track those rides I'd have to administer another set of segments. And if we make it completely fair, I'm missing a Mountainbike Ride too, and a Gravelbike Ride, and a Cargobike Ride: my cargobike is 46 kg, unassisted, and has the aerodynamic design of a house, but I still managed to grab a 5th place on momentum and explosive power, and got flagged for it (probably by the roadie who tried to keep up during that burst, haha).

    CONCLUSION

All of the above, my sporty friends, is my motivation to request a switch, preferably on my gear or even on my complete account, to refrain from having KOMs, but to be in the public leaderboards.

Since we have a climate to fix, there's nothing wrong with showing the public that there's actually faster ways of traveling on human power than a road bike. Of course, that road bike has it's charm and I even miss it every now and then, but make a little room for the weird, faster kid on the block too. On that note: GCN has actually set a great example :-)

If you managed up till here: Sorry about the longread!

  • In the last few hours I've had 4 Activities flagged as "in a vehicle".  None was in a vehicle (for any part). For 2 of the Activities the highest average speeds for Segments were 22 and 24 mph.  Has anyone else noticed something similar ? Maybe another user is being mischievous - if the flags are auto-generated there's something wrong when Segment speeds of 22 mph trigger a flag.

  • perhaps the lack of movement from strava on tracking top ten efforts in a personal tab is because a LOT of these details (and many more) are available on the VeloViewer app (powered by Strava)…?

but still, nothing on the “Strava” app… (but they own the data!!)

also, what about these other users that are constantly riding (EVERYDAY!!) ebikes on segments without properly indicating? even though they get flagged, or even called out socially, or, specific complaints WITH BACKUP sent to strava, these culprits continue to deteriorate our Strava experience among good friends and team mates.

then there’s the hackers that don’t actually have profiles or feeds, yet the show up on leaderboards… how’s is that even possible without Strava responding?

    hmm…

love strava, mostly… but irritating the leadership can’t solve some simple algorithms to pick these culprits.m, or, confirm data they already have the process for, into a simple accessible tab with a premium subscription.

  • filtering on 'full leaderboard' still doesn't work for many months.

when i try to filter 'people i'm following' and choose 'today' or 'this week' or 'this month' - the list is empty, however these ppl did that segment (today or this week or month).

It only shows something if i choose 'this year' or 'all-time'

  • Display only segments on the current route in the route planner (Snap segments to route)

During route planning I am often interested to see segments that lie on my route I could go for.
Unfortunately the planning tool currently only displays some random selection of segments in the visible area. It takes ages to zoom in/out, move the region to get some segments displayed I can look at further -- namely those that lie on my planned route; and not "5 kms away from it, downhill and in the wrong direction".
It would be a simple to implement filter that one could turn on with a checkbox to display only those.
