Changing FTP changes all previous training score data

Currently, updating your FTP causes a mass change to all prior workout data, rendering all the past performance data inaccurate (the data is only as good as the FTP it is attached to).

If - 12 months ago - my FTP was 250, and today I update it to 300, all my previous workouts are "downgraded" in their relative training intensity and stress scores. Which does not reflect reality because 12 months ago, these workout felt intense and stressful for my fitness level back then.

What should happen is that when you update FTP, only workouts after the change are affected.

Strava people - this is costing you money! Athletes who are serious about their data are using competitors' products and free alternatives. I am forced to use GoldenCheeteah, if you changed this one bug I'd be a premium Strava member.

  • Justin wrote "software which is purportedly designed to measure evolution and progress of fitness. "

I'm afraid that went out the window many years ago. The software is only designed to make money. And a few grumpy users (me included) venting in an obscure feature discussion won't stop 1000s of new "Summit" subscriptions...

Too bad Strava isn't on Yelp or Google reviews, but you can review the Strava app on your Android or iPhone ... ?

  • I assume these experts at Strava must be a bit uninsightful, because they do not understand the importance to find a solution for this problem.

I compare it to their 'intelligent' behaviour, not to understand the difference between calories and Kilocalories, even after years and dozens of user complaining.

    I have no hope.

  • Are there any news on this topic from @Strava? Is this planned to be a feature in the near future?

  • This definitely needs to get fixed.  I messaged support and sent a link to this thread as well.

  • LOL, I canceled my Summit account and sent a link to this thread and the other one like it.  They know about it, they just don't care.

  • Strava!!! you can not be taken seriously for fitness tracking with it working the way it is. I am cancelling my summit membership and sending this thread link in as well. I currently use Xert to track so I no longer need Strava's wonky data.

  • What's that? Still not fixed? Going on a year and the basic functionality of the Fitness and Freshness graph is still busted for users who use power meters?

Come on folks, you're not a small company and this isn't a hard fix. Set it in front of your engineers and they'll have it fixed in a week. Stop blowing people off.

  • Is this issue still being addressed? When might it be resolved?

I updated my FTP today and it adjusted all my previous ride analyses to the new FTP rather than the one at which I was riding at the time. I expected the new FTP to apply only to rides after I updated.

    Thank you.

  • They are never fixing this.  They don't care that what they are doing makes absolutely no sense and is not beneficial from a training prespective.  All they care about is collecting your data.  Letting my Summit membership lapse after paying for it for several years was the best decision I made.  I don't miss it in the least.

  • Adding to this thread, hoping this defect will be fixed.  FTP updates should only impact workout that are done afterwards.  It needs to be calendar based so that previous workouts are not recalculated when your current FTP is updated.  This is an obvious gap that was missed and needs to be addressed.  Thanks.

  • Experienced this today, made the search and found this thread. UNBELIEVABLE that this clearly has been an issue for so long. Strava, come on!

  • Strava can not be taken seriously as a training tool until this is fixed. Without this fix it is useless.

  • I'm the original poster of this issue. There have been a number of comments since I last commented here, so I thought I'd chime back in.

    - It's been 3 years since I posted this issue.

    - It's been over a year since Jeff from Strava paid lip-service to this issue.

To newer posters asking for updates on this issue - just move on. Move to another platform for your training needs. Whether it's general incompetence by Strava, or some sort of intellectual property issue, it is not going to get resolved. I've contacted them over a dozen times about this, it became my personal crusade. Crickets.

It's frustrating, but this is, however absurdly, where we are.

Edit: to add, probably the best - and only - thing you can do, if you are a Premium user, is to cancel your subscription and direct them to this post.

  • I cancelled my subscription over this issue, well over a year ago.  I really don't understand why it's so hard to change: honestly, seems like a day's work adding an index for time...  Without this problem fixed, Strava is kind of useless when making historical comparison.

Baffled why a platform so big and profitable can add bells and whistles nonstop, but fail to fix a glitch right at the core of its functionality.  Leave Strava, with prejudice.

  • My sub is up in March, I will be cancelling. It's unbelievable that an increase in FTP still changes all past data (Jan 2020) with regards to training zones, fitness etc. I means it's simply unbelievable! And on top of this if you do a ride without your power meter, you can't manually add a Training Load to keep fitness and freshness reasonably accurate. Why does anyone pay for this!

  • I've stopped paying for Strava over this issue as well as the renaming of activities (my Summit membership lapsed a few weeks ago and I don't plan on renewing). I've since moved on to other platforms for data analysis. I rarely check strava now. I was truly rooting for Strava at one time (had been a Premium/Summit member since 2013). I'm hoping that with the new people in charge these issues finally get addressed.

  • Happy, happy, joy, joy.
They finally implemented a solution on the website.
You can edit it in your profile.
Fun fact: All FTP changes I entered over time are there.

  • What's weird is that some folks have historical FTP data there and others don't (Mine has an FTP from last week, but that's it)
