Filter Segment Leaderboard by bike type

This would allow segments to be filtered to view only results by bike type, thus separating mountain bike versus road bike segments results.

  • I think some of you guys are missing the point that some of us mountain bikers are making.  I ride only on trails, but I ride these trails on two or more different styles of bikes.  My geared 26in bike is faster on some types of trails and my single speed 29er is faster at climbing, so it would be really useful and fun for me to be able to sort my times by the type of bicycle I was riding at the time.  Thanks for listening!

  • +1 to the filtering. I ride to segments sometimes and hate to see the road go to dirt. I ride a road bike exclusively. Thanks!!

  • Bob, the problem with doing trail type is that there are many places where Dirt & Road show up on the same segment. Even though they might be 20 feet or more apart, because Strava doesn't have very good accuracy, there's no way to separate those two so all you have to go on is Bike Type.

This request is currently ranked 4th on the list of User Desired changes, but it's been floating out there for 9 months. I doubt this will ever be implemented at this point. Strava seems to be slow implementing new features users want, instead going for changes they want, like newer, harder to read, feeds. ): It's disappointing, but at least they provide an API so that other sites can pick up the slack. Sure would be nice to see these features in the existing website though.

  • +1 for me. Split segments for MTB and Race please!

  • this is a stupid idea. You all should start running if you want peoples gear to be even. Thats not what cycling is about.

  • It's obvious you have no idea what this is about, which makes it somewhat obvious where the stupid moniker applies. There are already filters by weight, age, sex, people, clubs, etc. This is just a request for another way to filter the data on the site. KOMs are still singular with no regard for any filters.

  • Only problem with relying on the filtering, is that some people 'blindly' upload, ie don't change any checkboxes or settings, just upload. So the results would be flawed.

I think the filtering would be useful for separating segments though, then when using segment explore, you could separate ' MTB and road'  the same way as 'Ride and Run'  are currently separated. Would reduce clutter and allow only the desired segments to load on map.

  • If we follow Sam's suggestion above on classification of Segments (which I support) I would think we would need:

    1) Road

    2) Pave bike path

    3) Off road track (multi-use paths, forest roads, farm tracks - the kind of thing you can do on a cross bike with ease)

    4) Single-track (also include gnarly widetrack that is too rough for cross bikes)

    5) Mixed terrain (Potentially a bit of everything for long segments)

  • Actually this might be simplified further to:

    1) Road

    2) Track (Cyclocross bike capable)

    3) Track (MTB)

    4) Mixed Terrain

  • I think it needs to be simplified to offroad or road. Doesnt need to be overcomplicated.

  • Plugging the need for uni-cycle.  The speed and ride characteristics of a uni are completely different than a bi-cycle of any type.  Benchmarking against bicycles is irrelevant.

  • I found this topic thinking that I would like to see the explore tab be able to filter dirt or paved segments. but dirt bike and road bike may be an easier solution. This could be done by strava simply accessing the riders on the trail and those who declare there bikes could be declared generally as road or mtb. I think that if there is 70% more road bikes than mtb it is probably paved. The algorithm needs work but a fix needs to happen. I don't want to see road segments when I am trying to plan a good mtb ride. It becomes annoying and frustrating making me want to pursue other websites to plan my ride.

IT, figure this out, or I am going to write a website to compete with you that does this.

  • For, both, segment search and activity type this would be great for many of us. For those that don't see the benefit, there's no reason why they should have to use the feature. You only have to look at other activities to see its already possible to use this type of filter, it just needs more attention from the developers to add a great point of difference over other, similar sites/apps. It's already possible to detail other activities in sub categories like: Run, Walk, Hike, (even Snow Shoes); Skiing can be broken down into Alpine, Cross country, Snowboard, etc. how hard can it be to make Ride sub categories like Road, Cross country, DH and All Mtn, and be able to search for segments in those categories?

  • Come on Strava. Don't over-think this one. I don't know of anyone opposed to the general idea. I think you will satisfy 75% of us right away if you just add the one select-able attribute. [On Road / Off Road  /  Both]

All the other stuff can be hashed out as you see fit but the basic need is to be able to filter out Road from Dirt rides just like I can specify which bike I rode when uploading ride data.

I don't own a road bike and I don't want to see all that roadie stuff just like rider who is exclusively road doesn't want to see all my off road antics.

    PLEASE!

  • Same here, but the other way around. I ride road-only and also use quite a lot paved cycling path's in the forest, where off course are a lot of MTB trails as well. I think a split is a must and should be easy to implement.

  • This categorization could get a bit all too much ! Those towing kids (and various dog varieties) in Cougar Chariots

may feel they need their own category too.!

I favour  just  MTB, road bike, and exotica categories

  • Absolutely!  In my area (Western mountains of North Carolina), there are plenty of gravel roads that you can't ride a road bike on but that show up as segments right next to road segments.  Searching for new rides, I've planned routes out that I am not able to actually ride on.

  • Yes please . I would sign up to premium for this. Simply put mtb and road are so diffrent they require this. Being a mtber I think this would allow the segments to have different grades in mtb. Currently difficulty is displayed for up not down. In the mtb category you should make the segment creator highlight the type of traill it is by experience ie pro, expert, intermediate or perhaps black, red , blue etc ( or something similar) and probably some other info for the specific experience type such as technical, jumps etc etc I have had sections flagged as dangerous. .but I cant warn say beginners not to ride them..the sections are technically difficult but not dangerous...unless your new...this I think is a major diffence with mtb and road (not that downhillis not dangerous on the road its just different) . There are also quite a few segments where roads and trails are near one another and these can have mixed up results due to location. Cheers Rich

  • Rich, I think it would be hard to implement differently graded segments properly, its relying too much on individual users to correctly determine and set it, and I believe that a lot of users will be likely to do this incorrectly or overlook and ignore it.

  • The bike used is more relevant than the riding surface. Like mentioned earlier, MTB isn't even close to a road bike on the pavement and vice versa. When is Strava going to weigh in on this one. We can already select which bike was used on a ride. Just ad a surface category. Then, a filter option when displaying results. Perhaps if each of us submitted a separate feature request for this we would get their attention. Call it a "Feature Bomb" :-)

  • What about adding a filter to the leader board as they already have for gender?

  • Map my ride has more ride categories.  There should at a minimum be road versus mountain here as well.  MMR has some features I like over Strava but Strava is much easier on the battery than MMR.  A 2 hour ride on MMR would drain 50% of my battery, with Strava it is 20% at most.

  • I'd just like to say "Yes, please!" for this filtering (mountain vs. road) feature too!  Even when I break a PR on one of my segments, I'm still so far down on the list under the road guys and girls its hard to enjoy the competitive side of the app.  I also agree with some of the comments above.  Since the majority of my rides are commutes, it would be difficult to have to go in and modify my rides as I'm usually pressed for time before work.  Just a default "bike type" setting that stays with my profile until I change it would be out-STAND-ing.  Killer, app, BTW!

  • Hey Strava -  When is this going to happen?  This request is now over a year old.  Today is actually the 13 month anniversary?    Is there anything holding this back?   Clearly its something the people want.   Thanks!

  • Yes, I would also very much appreciate this feature.  You have several types of skiing while only a single type of biking ("ride".)  Please provide this.  Thanks!

  • Filtering by gender makes sense, as Strava awards both KOM and QOM.
