Mountain Bike as separate activity type or tag

Please add mountain biking to the list of activities in the app because the cals vs speed are very different from road riding. Also a count down to workout start would be a good feature.

  • So why staying with strava then?

Strava is making money by selling (anonymously hopefully) our GPS recordings to urban city planners. All people being displeased by the disdain of strava for mtb riders should stop providing data.

I know moving account from one service to another is cumbersome but it should be possible.

  • @Gianni Martilli - you don't need premium for photos. There's very little in premium of value to MTB.

  • Totally agree that there should be a separate MTB activity and respective logo. I now always refusingly select the road bike logo.😉 Same as forcing a snowboarder to select a ski logo! When will this be available in the app?

  • They created a tag for electrical bikes way faster haha... Difficult to understand the way of thinking of these guys

  • In my opinion there is something hidden that they don't want to reveal.
I think we all agree that their total silence on this subject is very strange

  • wow, 6 years, and nothing. How hard is it for Strava to add an off-road tag or sport type and change the rolling resistance accordingly?

  • Totally unbelievable and most of all, unacceptable that Strava is still not providing a separate activity type for MTB. This feature request has been placed more than 6 years ago.

To me it feels like Strava, on the feature side, has been standing totally still in the last 3 years. The UX has seen almost no changes, there are still features missing for triathletes (i.e. having a ‘triathlon’ master activity with the different disciplines as sub elements), etc.

Strava, please wake up! Companies that stand still are moving backwards.

    Hello Bas,

We review all feature requests and suggestions and we are grateful for your contribution. It’s our goal to improve Strava based on your feedback whenever possible.

One thing to remember, just because something's popular doesn't mean it'll be implemented. Our forums are just one component of our decision-making process. While your ideas are genuinely valuable, we need to be selective and balance our priorities. Thanks for understanding!

    Best,

Hi Katie, Thanks for your reply. I filled in the survey. I see the survey has been online for two years now and no mountainbike activity has been added yet. Is there anything you can say in more detail with respect to timing? Is this feature currently being build? Thanks!

Hi, I’m a vivid MTB-er and really miss a MTB activity type. Main reason that I now always reluctantly select the road bike logo.😉 Same as forcing a snowboarder to select a ski logo! I see snowboarding and skiing are two separate activities so why not road and MTB? A lot of members will be really happy with it!

When will this be available in the app? Thanks!

  • Can you please re-post the survey. I'm getting a "dynamic link not found" error and I'd like to do my part to make MTB activity support a priority for Strava.

If you include this functionality and make it easy to use from the mobile app we can better use Strava to track stuff like suspension services intervals without clouding the numbers with our other bikes. I can only imagine that Strava wants MTBers out on the trails as much as possible.

You can help us anticipate and maintain our bikes when its raining rather than miss a sunny ride because we need to fix our bikes in stead.

  • I'd argue that it is actually reasonably dangerous not distinguishing between the two. I created a route for my road bike here in Colorado and got many miles in only to find that the last section was a difficult mountain bike single track. I was running out of food and water but had to turn around and return the longer way I had just come from.

  • Hi all, i would like to have an option to select my mountain bike or my road bike. Cycle is not enough, because clearly speeds are very different, and, ofc, when i analyze my segments, i find very hard to compare times with others because i'm struggling to understand if they used MTBs or road bikes. I use both, and time segments are obviously very different.

    Thank you in advance,

    D.

  • Fabio, i tuoi ringraziamenti sono sprecati, ormai sono quasi 7 anni che è stata fatta questa richiesta e non hanno mai risposto.

Fabio, your thanks are wasted, it's been almost 7 years since the request was made and they never repiled.

  • Adding my voice to this one also (can't believe it hasn't been implemented yet...).

A separate MTB category would allow for MTB challenges as well. The current cycling challenges are very road focussed and it would be great to have something to aim for while out on the dirt as well.

  • Up for this one :)

It's frustrating to see my times ran on MTB mixed with the ones done on road cycle.

Please separate the categories, which have in common only two wheels :D

  • going on 7 years, just shows it is not a priority and probably will never happen -- trailforks should start their own activity/training tracking, if that ever happened I would say bye-bye Strava

  • It is a nuisance to have to keep pausing your strava just so you can keep your times on the Descents and not piss of roadies who care so much about their road climbing times. I am soo tired of worries about road bikes flagging your ride on shuttle days.

Please seperate regular road bike activities from MTB. This request has been here for years!

  • I don't get it, there are 11 pages of people requesting a mtb category, doesn't Strava listen? Post after post but no response! Just let people choose road or mtb for their ride, is that so hard. Strava appears clueless

  • For those who are asking for mountain and road biking to be separated so they aren't mixed in the leaderboards, how exactly do you think that will work?  Realize that you have a decade or more of data in the system that did not designate one or the other.  If you now suddenly have the two (or more) separate designations, then your data from here foreward will be okay (not nearly "great" because a lot of people just won't bother to pick one or the other or think to correct when the wrong one gets picked), but what about the archived data?  You will still have no idea what people were riding when they got on the leaderboard 5 years ago.  Are you advocating wiping the leaderboards clean and starting from scratch with the new categories?  If so, is it fair to take someone's legitimate KOM from 5-10 years ago?

I can see using a separate designation as the OP stated, in order to get more accurate calories burned and stuff like that, but I don't see how it would work for leaderboards when you factor in historical data that just doesn't include that feature.

  • Easy. Just create a tag. Like the one for commute. Then you can have leaderboards populated with just the tagged ones. Again, easy.

  • @Jason Lamoreaux. I only care about being able to track my statistics road vs. mtb. No need to go back in time. KOM/QOM should stand regardless of what bike is used. It would be nice to have a club mountain bike where one can track MTB rides of members.

  • Furthermore, I think we all put all our bikes in Strava. When I go for a ride I choose the bicycle I use, so every single record "knows" which bike is used. It would be enough to tag the bikes with the category (mtb / road / gravel) and all rides (even the old ones) could be divided by category.

  • This is so stupid. People, look Strava is a dumb company. Give up already. They haven't listened and they don't intend to. Were this company run by people who actually understand biking or even databases, it would be in so much better shape. Rather than offering people what they really want, they are grasping at straws to milk a profit. Look, this is really easy. There is database. In it their is a field for every ride that I do that says what the bike I rode was. When I buy a new bike and add it to my strava, that bike appears in a drop down for which bike I rode. When I select a bike it goes into the database associated with that ride (along with what I called the ride, etc.). Really fucking easy to make a dropdown for when you first enter the bike that says, type of bike and I select "Mountain Bike" or "E-bike" or whatever. Then, whenever I do a ride, I can finish the ride and select that bike. It would then AUTOMATICALLY change the ride type to mountain bike ride. If I was being an idiot and going for a road ride on my all mountain bike, I could change the type of ride to reflect that. This same fix could be applied to segments. When you create a segment, a menu could be put in that says, "type of activities" and you could click "mountain biking" as the option. This would also mean that I could create a segment for a trail run that doesn't show up when I mountain bike on the same trail and vice versa. Doing this after the fact is easy too. Many, many people care enough about data and their rides that if Strava asked them to note which segments on their rides were dirt, single track, etc., they would gladly do it.

But, Strava don't give a crap. If adding a field and setting it to automatically populate based on the type of bike you rode is too hard for the data base managers at Strava, they need to be replaced with a competent high-school coder.

I have no idea if Strava gives one crap about customer support. Based on the length of this comment thread (both number of posts and number of years) it appears they don't. I used to pay Strava. I don't any more. They need to earn my money. And that isn't by making topo maps part of the app - I can get that much better from other apps that are free. It's by doing what others haven't done *yet* and that is giving better data analysis and filtering. Fix your shit Strava

  • Paulo - But how much value do you put on a leaderboard if you know that it is only partial data.  Personally, a leaderboard like that is worthless to me, but I know others may feel differently.

Robert - That sounds like it would make sense.  Adding a tag so people can track their own statistics seems like a doable and useful function.  My main response was to those who wanted full on KOM leaderboards for each type of bike.

  • Gianni - You would be surprised.  If you look through a lot of strava files, you will see that a big chunk of people do not designate what bike they are using, much less what TYPE of bike they are using.  Historical records consist of a lot of this data that would not have any kind of designation to assign to it.  Add in those people who are no longer strava users who aren't going to go back and update their files.  At best, you will have a partial data set.

  • I'd say MTB as a category would just have no historical data and everything starts from that point. Bit like e-bike I guess?

I doubt it will get used though so it's not much practical use. Many e-bikers I think don't bother picking e-bike category, at least until people flag their rides.

Anyway, I've given up. I don't use challenges or leaderboards now as I've gone followers only (for reasons of sensitive trails, and I'm not interested in a competitive element).

Only thing I would like is the ability to have private or private group/team leaderboards. i.e. nothing goes onto public leaderboards, but a group of you can share a leaderboard.

Again, that's been long requested and ignored.

Though it's just for curiosity to see how a particular ride compared, and I can just manually look at friend's stats anyway.

I'm on the verge of dumping Strava and just using Garmin Connect or maybe Trailforks (which is at least MTB oriented).

  • Jason - we will never have the perfect solution. Some riders won't or don't care about these things. But we should have the option. They did it for E-BIKES why can't they do it for MTB? We just need something from Strava. This thread has been active 8 years, and has the 9th over all votes, but still nothing from Strava.... the bad thing is where else can we go there is nothing like it out there. I am not going to leave or threaten to not pay, I want Strava to succeed, I would just like them to be involved in the conversation at this point.
