Add support for ANT+ with Strava Android App

Has anyone tried using an ANT USB adaptor (such as the one Garmin sells) to receive ANT sensors on an Android phone? I have a Galaxy Nexus phone with Jelly Bean (4.2). It seems that if I install the ANT Radio Service and the ANT USB Service (both free from the Google Play store) I might be able to get ANT to work with my phone and hopefully the Strava app.  The description for the ANT Radio Service app lists compatible apps but Strava is not listed

  • It is very, very annoying to have to use an entirely separate app to record my ANT+ data before uploading to Strava. I'm not *yet* at the point of considering dropping my premium account, but I have thought about it - and purely because of this lack of support for ANT+ sensors.

It seems to me that Strava's engineering team have probably built the BLE capability (and dependance) directly into the app, rather than using a shim (wrapper) to allow for supporting other protocols as well. That seems a tad more time-to-market focused rather than longevity- or supportability-focused, which is disappointing - they are clearly very capable engineers; where's the abstraction?

I would definitely help with testing an ANT+-enabled Strava app.

  • I just cancelled my free trial of Strava Premium and until ANT+ is supported, I have no use to pay for this app- I can't justify it for an "estimated power" output and that flashy heatmap thing.

I've got HR, speed and cadence sensors, and I'm considering buying a power meter- but if Strava doesn't support them then I won't be paying for the premium membership.

    Hello!  Developers! Are you listening?!?

  • Here-Here James, well said.

I also am not quite at the point of cancelling, but have just started using a new Polar cycling computer and will be testing out the software/process for analysing heart-rate and ride data.

Would be great if Strava would just work with Ant+, may well end up cancelling Premium as well.

  • Nice to see that Samsung Gear support is available especially when the android section on this forum is full of requests for it (NOT).

Maybe the solution for ANT+ users is not to request it and it will happen....

On the road today for a spin, my giant ridesense ANT+ meters and ENDOMUNDO. Catch up Strava.... Popularity doesn't make it the best...

  • Might as well forget it and just use IpBike, Endomondo or something else to record your rides with full ANT+ support. Strava does not give a rats ass about getting Android right, they have their heads up their Apple about this, if you get my drift.

  • Thanks for replying, Elle/Strava (though it's been 6 months now).

I think what's frustrating here is that it seems obvious to many of your users that the Android App should support ANT+ when so many new phones have ANT+ sensors built in.  It doesn't seem like such a massive project to support it and most riders are using ANT+ equipment--and the iPhone Strava app supports ANT+!  Maybe you can explain why it's not on the Android roadmap?

I appreciate having Android Wear nicely supported but now Strava is much less useful to me without ANT+ when there are other very good apps that do support it.  I think I'll also let my premium subscription lapse until ANT+ is supported.

  • It's becoming increasingly obvious that Strava has their own agenda. Interestingly the thing that keeps companies ahead of their competitors is innovation. Won't be long before a startup creates a strava clone with added features and functionality. It's a shame because Strava used to be an innovative company, but now they seem to have stopped developing new features.

  • Elle, Eric makes a good point, as a customer we do appreciate your regular updates, even if it's to inform us there has been no change to the Roadmap.

I have also cancelled my subscription for Premium, and hope to restart it soon.

I look forward to your update on progress and the current thinking within the Product Development team within Strava.

    Many thanks

  • Thanks Mark, and others who have continued to leave us feedback,

I have no new updates to post at this time. Support for ANT+ accessories is still pending until some decisive action is taken by the Strava team. Sorry to relay the disappointing news!

Shame on you Strava development guys!

  • I'll take up programming to get this going if need be. I was really excited when my Wahoo HRM came in and worked great with Strava. Then I hooked up my GSC10, and had to resort to Endomondo to get the readings. I was very confused until I started reading this forum. I guess I just thought this should have been supported by now since it is on iPhone and is a popular standard wireless technology that is fitness related. I thought Strava was about fitness/health, hopefully this will be supported soon. Thanks for the updates on the subject, even if it is sad news.

  • I too am totally disappointed (and a premium member) and would like Strava to seriously consider ant+. I bought a phone capable of ANT+ and didn't even consider that Strava would be so backward and developing BTLE.Strava Grpahs appear poorer recently,I cant use Strava on my (now old) 2yo phone and no ANT+, I really want Strava to succeed however it appears that Strava needs to listen more.

Please reconsider and add ANT+ and another premium non-renewer.

  • @Ewen, Did you say Strava needs to listen??? Like they would listen if you asked them to??? You obviously have Strava mixed up with some organization that actually gives a sh!t about their users. They are lost in some BS BTLE "road map" with their iPhones stuck where the sun don't shine. They seem to think that ANT+ is some sort of insect pest.

  • Here. I will save Emma the time to respond to these messages.
Unfortunately (even though there have been several requests) we have no interest in listening to requests to add this feature (that every other android app has).

Its just not in our roadmap that no one can see or we cant tell you what the road map is or what is on it.

We are currently focusing all our efforts on features that no one is requesting or there are no devices for (Samsung gear etc).

Even though this thread is 2 years old we still don't think it justifies adding it to our roadmap but would be glad to add support for stuff that hasn't been invented yet...

Apologies if I missed something... (AND YES THIS THREAD IS 2 YEARS OLD)

  • I'm new to Strava and monitor my HR thru a separate HRM monitor band and watch.

I'd certainly pay to go premium if Strava would record my HR alongside my route and time info, and am rather astonished that they haven't implemented the ANT+ protocols for Android phones to allow for this. Integrated HRM data is the killer app in their premium offer isn't it?  So why not prioritize its smooth implementation for the most popular smartphone o/s in the world?

I guess I'll just stick with using the free version and looking at my watch at the top of hills, but it is a very odd business decision for sure...

  • This question is marked as answered and the answer is a resounding "no", accompanied by a hearty laugh and a raised middle finger.  Strava's roadmap is a clear cut case of innovator's dilemma.  They have put a fair amount of money into BTLE, thinking that it would set them apart and absolutely crush the competition.  What they didn't count on is 1) the incredible inventory of ANT+ devices that users own, such as HRM's, Powertaps or other power meters and speed and cadence sensors which we don't want to go out and replace and 2) Android phones coming with native ANT+ connectivity.

Well, Strava, you bet wrong and the community is pissed.  When I got my PT wheel I was all set to upgrade my membership to Premium to take advantage of all the cool analysis features.  And then I found that although my phone supports it, your app does not.  I have a workaround in place with ipBike, thanks to Ifor Powell.  I get to record data from speed, cadence, HR and power and upload it as I am putting my bike away, but until you get it straight that I am not going to pay for a premium subscription and replace all my devices with BTLE, you will not get a cent from me.  As far as I am concerned, your website is great, but your app is inferior, and doesn't meet my requirements.  Read that again.  Your app doesn't meet user requirements.  It might meet your product manager's requirements but I don't care about that.  And until you start caring about your customers, you are throwing revenue away.

  • How do you like a post (Jeff's above) and why are we still having this discussion two years on? If Strava can read messages via btle and massage that data then surely it is not a lot of code to implement an ant+ layer. Second to this, Strava states they run their own version of agile development. So where does the customer sit in demanding sprints/iterations and priority. It sounds more akin to waterfall development that chugs on regardless of the outside world.

Finally. I emailed Strava and was disappointed with the response.

Please Strava, how have you disenfranchised so many premium members?

  • This is really disappointing as some of the best selling Android devices currently on the market for android have ant+ built in now. This would be easy for Strava team to implement the functions for those people that have it built in at least.

    c'mon man!

  • So surprised about this, just finally took the plunge and bought a GSC10 to pair with my new S5 running Strava... And nothing!

I only started cycling a year ago and without Strava I wouldn't have continued, yet now it looks like I'll have to move to another app for my cycling. Very VERY VERY disappointed Strava! :(

  • Sorry to see this- found this forum looking for how to connect.  Had a heart attack on my ride 4 weeks ago.  Back on the bike with a new HRM.  If I cant upload and track data Strava no longer works for me.  Cancelling premium today.

  • Brian:  IPBike in the android market will allow you to connect your HRM and other ant+ devices.  You can set it up to upload directly to Strava and you can watch your HR while on the bike.  It's a workaround, but it's better than letting your HR get too high too soon.

  • I've just downgraded my app rating from 5 star to 3 star in the play store a result of lacking ant+ support. A lower app rating might have more weight than a support forum post.

  • Why don't you write this warning on the Garmin Premium HRM page in shop about this item not being compatible with ANT+ equipped Android phones? I am sure many people like me didn't need to check the forums for compatability of something that is sold in Strava Shop with Strava! There is a warning for iPhone APP which says you would need an ANT+ adaptor but as I allready have ANT+ in my GS4 I didn't think it wouldn't be compatible. Sorry Strava you are just stabbing yourself with this "give a damn about android users" attitude. I have read this thread. It has been months!
