Tag a friend and add them to an Activity

I have only been using Strava for a couple of weeks, so this is a beginner question. A friend and I are following each other on Strava already. We ran this afternoon, but only he recorded it in Strava. I am trying to find out if it is possible to "tag" me in that run so it will be a part of my profile and stats?

  • Hi Elle, thanks very much for replying. I appreciate this may be a difficult development and ehich stats to include. To me its just the mileage. The whole segment and individual stats is kindve mute anyway if you actually ride with other people as your speed is dictated by the group. But there's nothing worse than being cheated out of mileage when you're device dies or you simoly forgot to press start! Mileage gives you your over all stats, heatmaps and training.... I'll go with the pretty please too :)

Thanks Matt Hurst - I agree!

  • @Patrick H - I like the way you're thinking! This kind of feedback specifically on how to implement a feature like this is helpful. At a conceptual level, this feature suggestion is great, but the exact implementation is a bit of a grey zone.

For example, As Matt Hurst states, what's most important to him is accounting for mileage. However, we have an existing feature for this in the manual activity entry. If your recording fails, or you miss a GPS recording, you can enter your activity stats manually. However, this manual activity is not eligible for "Activity Grouping" because there is no GPS data.

Perhaps one idea for this implementation is a feature to manually connect or link a GPS-activity with a manual activity of a friend who you rode with, thus linking the two as if both were GPS recordings. So, the user who is missing the recording creates a manual activity then chooses an option to link the manual activity with an existing GPS activity.

Or - taking a bit from Patrick's comments - what if Person A with the GPS recording "sends" Person B an auto-populated manual activity entry with all the equivalent stats from the recorded Activity, and Person B accepts the manual activity which is then added to Person B's account (and linked to the GPS activity).

    Thoughts?

  • @Elle - What is so "grey" about being able to TAG another user in an activity in which you remain the sole owner? "David ran 5.1 mi [this is my activity]- along with Craig and Steve"[this connects friends to my activity]

Any more thought on this, and you will need to pay us! +1's = missed conversions from freemium to premium ;)

  • @elle "sending" the activity would work fine.  I know what David is saying though as its a fairly common social media activity to add other members.  even if it was premium only ;)

Apart from mileage totals, I love the heatmap, so recording the fact that I cycled somewhere is almost as important as clocking the distance.  Still, I guess this is all why I use my garmin and not the iphone app.  Battery life!!! (and gps accuracy)

the HRM, Power stats are more of interrest on a training session than a social cycle, hence my lack of real interrest in them.  but where, how long and how far, are very important.  the "individual" stages speed data is immaterial as its dictated by the guys you are with.  I find, being slightly quicker, still results in a slower segment as you've "stopped" for them to catch up.   So leave segments and the like for the solo and aggressive, and give the shared cycles to the social cyclists.

Being a fairly technical SQL guy, I really don't see why you can't "clone" the data, surely can't be more than a bit of code to say "add me to this ride" and then replicate a few table records?

  • Create a link to the GPS data which is used for the uploaded ride from x to the profiles tagged, but only show them in the linked profiles when profile accepts it. that way no duplicated data.

  • @Matt Hurst - being a 'fairly technical SQL guy' - you must know that it is not always as simple in practice as it is in theory!

I like the idea of being able to tag friends into an activity that they've accompanied me on but forgot to switch on their Strava App. I also like the idea of being able to tag people in comments you've made on your own/other peoples activities.

@Elle - Sounds like you're on the right track with copying another persons activity into a manual activity - but wouldn't this be more of a temporary solution to the overall problem? Which is the ability to connect and share activities, etc with friends with a more 'social media' like approach.

For example, you can connect and share with Facebook, but often people would rather keep the Strava details off of Facebook and strictly shared with their 'inner circle' of riders. (This also keeps those people on your own site)

Better to do it right the first time! =)

  • @daniel, dont i know it! However cloning data is probably one of the easiest things to do if you understand your db structure and links, but it does take time and effort to test and release. I suspect the wider challenge would be the button to do it and who you give access to. As for inner circle, isnt that simply a case of only have followers you want? I'm just thinking maybe we have enough +1 now for a dev :)

  • Thanks a lot for the continued discussion here.

No plans for development yet, at least we're listening!

  • I really thought I could do this as my NEW Riding friend thinks I can just add her to my ride. PLEEEEEEEASE make this feature soon.

  • Agree with Patrick H. (and many others) above.  I'd like to see my "premium" membership do something.  There's enough members asking for this feature above to warrant "plans for development."

  • OK.....  I have figured out how to do this manually:

Open your activity feed, click the activity you want to share, click the spanner then click "Export GPX file". Save the file somewhere safe or send it to your buddy. On the other user, go to the activity feed and in the top right corner, click the upload button. On the left you will see 4 buttons. Click the button "File" then choose the file and upload it.

Whilst this is a manual process and a bit long winded, if you are on a group ride you could either email the GPX file to all embers of the group or upload it to a forum if you have one available.

I do still want a tagging feature in strava though.

  • Tags please, as others have said it not about the detailed stats, but would be nice to be able to count the miles/ride in your record for ref and to share with others.

  • Runkeeper does something similar whereby you tag friends that went along with you.

Feature request by the begin of 2013, sounds like we'll never see this feature implemented :(

  • This feature would be nice!

I often ride with my wife, I only bring the tracker device. Tagging her on my ride, on her's profile should appear the activity, track with altitude, without my personal data like speed, heart rate and cadence. Even better if in the activity details is specified that it's not a "personal" activity but a group one.
