Tag a friend and add them to an Activity

I have only been using Strava for a couple of weeks, so this is a beginner question. A friend and I are following each other on Strava already. We ran this afternoon, but only he recorded it in Strava. I am trying to find out if it is possible to "tag" me in that run so it will be a part of my profile and stats?

  • I often go for a walk or a run with a friend and would be nice to being able to tag them. Endomondo offers this function as standard. The tagged person then has a choice to copy the workout to be added as theirs. Therefore I am in full support of adding this function.

  • Please add this feature, the same way RunKeeper already does it. I guess time/pace/GPS data should show on the activity of tagged runners, but not heart rate as this would be runner-specific.

  • I just started using Strava, and I like everything about it, but this is a glaringly obvious missing feature. I think it's expected of any kind of app with social characteristics.

  • Yes, it would be great to tag or easily share with others.  The workaround sort of works and could include needing to edit the gpx files.  I have had riding buddies, and myself, loose battery or have other GPS/Phone problems, so it would be great to just tag or share this with someone else.  (I know that I've seen this on another sports tracking site.)

  • I recently switched from Runkeeper to Strava: the app is way more detailed and faster..but the fact that I cannot add a friend to an activity annoys me a lot. Pease add the feature to add a friend when saving an activity..so we don't both have to run the app while exercising...it's dumb ;)

  • Can we get some feedback from the Strava Development team?

My kid has an account but not his own device, and it would be nice to be able to log his miles.

  • Greetings,

The roundabout way to do this is to have your friend export a version of their file then upload the file to your account, thus creating a duplicate. Then Strava will show you both as performing the activity together and stats will be included to both your profiles.

In terms of tagging, you can mention other Strava users in an Activity comment via the mobile app. This will send them a notification that they have been mentioned.

I don't currently have an update on how Strava could combine both of these concepts, in that a special tag could automatically replicate an activity on someone else's profile. Please continue to leave us your comments on how you see this feature working and why it would be useful, thanks!

  • Commenting as directed for Mod.

I would see this feature working by:

    1. The inclusion of a "Me too!" button when viewing the activity that has been uploaded/manually entered by your friend.
    2. This will then create a reproduced activity on your page, with the same course (if a GPS file has been uploaded), and the same distance / elevation (if entering manually).
    3. You have the option to set the start and finish times (so if you both ran the same 5k stretch at different speeds, you'll be counted as having run together but the events will show different speeds and times).
    4. If possible, it would be good if this also created a link between people who did the same run at the same time/date. i.e. When viewing the activity on one person's page, there was a feature at the bottom saying "Other people who did this run...", giving their overall time.

  • It would be most useful to be able to do this.  I have just done a race with a friend and her watch lost GPS partway round.  I have exported and sent her the GPX file but it is quite a hassle.  Runkeeper offers this very easily.  On the whole I prefer Strava but find it frustrating that this so such a cumbersome way of dealing with it.  I look forward to a quick, tag a friend button!

  • I would also love this feature. As per the pinned moderator request, here are two ways that I would see this being implemented:

    1. The one who uploaded the activity would be able to select others who were involved, and then the GPS data (time, distance, etc) would copy over to the tagged person's account as well. (Obviously things like cadence, heart rate, and other personal data would not be applicable and thus would not carry over. This would be a distance/time thing only, really.)

    2. A person could tag him/herself on an activity. (Programming could have an option wherein the original uploader of the activity would approve/deny this, or not, depends on the programmer's choice I suppose.) The same data would then copy over to the second account: distance, time, etc.

This would really add to the social aspects of this site, which is one of the best parts of it. Hope this post helped!

  • Perhaps if another user was tagged they can be added to the ride and be awarded the distance and perhaps altitude values but not be added to any leaderboard so that their own PB data and the integrity of any leaderboards is preserved.

A possible issue would be that if someone was accidentally tagged on a ride and had also uploaded their own ride data that the system could identify duplicate entries or at least have a way for the tagged ride to be deleted so they could use their own ride data and be included in leaderboards if my suggestion above was imlemented.

  • Really Strava, 4 years and nothing on this, come on, at least put out something here, even if you could tag yourself (or another could tag you) on a ride but no leaderboard stats came along with it. At the very least can you please explain the difficulty you are having with moving this forward so folks can either know you're never going to do anything about it or you are working on it and it's just more difficult than it seems. I'm a paying member of Strava and I have to tell you that if someone was to tell me of another app that did have this capability I'd be lobbying all my friends to switch.

  • I switched from Runkeeper a while back because Strava works better for cyclists, but man I really miss the tag option. Such a waste having to both use the app if you are cycling/walking with someone. or a small group. Not everyone want to log things separately to get new personal records all the time. Sometimes you just want a nice relaxed ride/walk right? And it saves battery time as well..at least for the people not logging at the time ;)

Runkeeper had the function for years, it can't be that hard to put it a bit further up the list for the next Strava update?

  • I'm brand new to Strava and wanted this feature on day one. I'm kind of blown away it's been an issue with so many customers and Strava has never responded to this thread in over 4 years. I understand the purists' perspectives but why not allow the person who owns the stat to share it with friends who were on the same ride. Anyone who doesn't want to do this can vote 'no.'
