Create Group or Club Challenges

I would love to be able to set up challenges within groups for the folks that I ride with. Complete with the features that are on the normal Strava challenges such as leaderboards, ranking.

Ability to set up the challenge measurement such as mileage, time, suffer score etc.

I feel like this would really help drive people to ride even harder, especially those that might feel a little overwhelmed by some of the site wide challenges.

  • I would love to create a challenge for a group of friends, such as "200 hours of any workout - MB, running, skiing, etc." for the entire year - or split up per quarters. Especially for beginners that is so much easier to do.

  • Given that this feature was suggested over 1 year ago can the Stava Team (Elle in particular) give some indication of whether it will ever happen and is so what the timeframe might be?

The club feature is OK but what about the times when you are organising a once only charity ride? What you want to do is create the route before hand and then track riders who are on Strava when they do the ride.

Can you give us a timeframe Elle?

    Thanks in advance.

  • we are running a series of Time Trials during the summer for our club so that many riders will ride the whole series: would be great to use Strava to track each athlete over each race and over the series.. I reckon this would move Strava use to the next level and take it "beyond Social and on to Competitive" !!! There, I've even written yer tag line

I second this request made by Donncha S. Please Strava/Elle can we have some feedback on this? There has been no feedback from yourselves for a while on this thread and as much as I love Strava this is poor on your behalf

  • I posted a comment on another forum recently which may relate to this feature suggestion: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21510607-Segments-which-only-apply-to-your-Club-s-

"What if we made it easier to filter segment results by your club, and pulled this feature into the club page? For example, if there was another tab on the Club page for "Club Segments", the club could select some number of existing segments, and have the club-only segment results displayed there. In one glance, a club member could review the designated Club segments and track leaderboard changes, etc.

Even better, add a time filter component, such as showing club leaderboard results from 'this date to that date'.

    Thoughts?"

  • Ele, that woudl be a good start until further development could be done. Our club is always asking for things just so they can see only member activity and would like club challange

  • Elle, that would be a good start, and the time filter component is important. It would make it possible to host virtual competitins in our club. Go for it :-)

  • That would be great!! It would really help (Strava-)clubs to add value.
It is still not as good as closed segments for clubs. Which would not only be good for the riders (who have segments to compete only with their club/mates/level) and for the clubs (more added value to their members), but also for Strava, as it would bring some structure in the jungle of segements that exists in more popular areas, and potentially offer a source of income as well, if only possible for clubs with a (to be developed) premium Strava membership.
But presenting filtered rankings in a club segments area would be a big step forward!
Thanks for thinking and sharing with us, Elle!

  • There are interesting tings happening at one of your competitors. In their solutuon you can now create a event for a user defined period of time, from one day to a full season., and add segments to that event, and other users can join that event. On other functions Strava is superior, but beware of competition ;-)

  • Just wanted to add my voice here. I can't believe this isn't a feature. I actually emailed out to my club that I'd "set up a challenge for us" assuming that this feature existed...then looked for it and couldn't find it.

I thought this was one of the original features of Strava (at least that's how it was pitched to me ~2 years ago when I joined)

  • I also want to throw my support in for the Club challenge feature.

This is probably going to be the biggest 'Benefit' for STRAVA premium users ....

ie better marketing, increase premium take ups... better value... hmm hmm, STRAVA marketing team :))

  • This feature would be another great way to keep club/group momentum going.  I've got almost all our club members on Strava and many have gone premium.  The new features have been rolling in steadily, lets bump this one up the queue!

  • Club challenges would be great.

Also we would like some customisation to the leader boards.

i.e. be able to set the timespan to more than one week.

  • Club challenges would take STRAVA to a new level in terms of interactivity. I work for a major cycling component manufacturer and having access to club challenges would allow us to connect our company on a global level, we can challenge employees and company representatives from other countries to engage with the company via challenges within our club etc.

I think it would really help premium memberships grow.

  • I agree too, this would be a great feature that would leave the competition miles behind (excuse the pun!).

  • If a user who is a club member could link several segments togther - this would be all we need to create a custom club challenge.    Currently we can sort a single segment per club over preset time periods (all time, this season, last week, etc), but we cannot link segments together.

If we could link segments in this fashion and track overall times for the linked segments ......then we could create a custom club challenge that would be almost like a stage race.

Additional features could then be added, such as cut off dates for each segment in the series.

Our club is currently planning a challenge similar to this using Strava to collect times and compiling results offline ourselves......it would be great if we could just do it all on Strava.

More features would also be great but this one simple change would be a big step forward.

We think Strava is great and are encouraging our club members to sign up and participate in our Club Challenge.

  • I'd like the club admin to be able to star segments for the club.  That way the club can have their own "My Segments" tab of courses that are popular among club members.  Right now I'm including the club name in the segment titles so we can find official club routes.  For example, MUDD (club name): Hill Loop 5 Miler.  Once we've accumulated enough segments, the club can organize a race series.

  • I got inspired the other day and decided that I would build a clubs challenge tool using the Strava's awesome API. I have attached the code for you to try for your clubs (see zip file).

This tool allows you to create a challenge with the following options:

    1. You can setup an overall challenge based on either distance or climbing or both

    2. You can define stages within the challenge (again based either on km or climbing or both)

    3. You can define green and polka points competition based on public segments.

A couple of notes about the code:

    1. If you have a very large club or you have lots of segments in your points competition it is possible that it will fail, due to Strava's API rate limits. (for those programmer you will just need to add a rate limiting function to the code)

    2. The code is not the most efficient code, there are many areas were it could be improved.

    3. The results page is not the most pretty but it's functional :)

    4. I haven't fully bug tested the code, but I did test it with some of our data from Strava.

    How to install the code:

    1. The setup is a little technical, but not impossible. You will need a web host with PHP and MySQL

    2. Setup a MySQL database and then run the attached "strava.sql" file to create the required tables.

    3. Copy the files in the "club-challenges.zip" into a publicly accessible folder on your web server. (rename config-default.php to config.php)

    4. The only file that you will need to edit is the "config.php" file. (this file is were you define the parameters of your challenges and connect the mysql database, I put lots of comments so hopefully it makes sense)

    5. You will need to setup a cron job on your server that executes "cron-script.php" every 20mins. (You can also just manually just go to that page everytime you want to refresh the results. )

    6. To view the results of your competition just go to the "index.php" page.

Let me know what you think.

    Andrew.

  • Hi people,  Im looking into the feasibility of setting up an "event" on Strava that all entrants to a group ride could join and at the end of the ride be able to work out quickest rider, KOM's etc

I apologise straight away as I am a Garmin user (hangs head!) so do not have any depth of knowledge of Strava other than it has a high user level and is highly addictive!  Is this idea acheivable?  The ride would be next year so if not in use now is it likely to be a feature by then?  Does anyone have any suggestions how I can do this or if there is another programme that is able to do this?  Appreciat eany comments :)

  • Andrew Smit -

Are you out there? I'm trying to add your scripts to my site to organize a club challenge. I'm running into some issues.

Are you available to go through the issues?

    Thanks

  • Just a reminder to everyone who might use the code I shared above. The code was released as an example as what is possible with Strava's API.

I'm not responsible for the code and what impact it might have on your servers/computers. Also you are responsible for your own challenges (ie. you are responsible to make sure it is safe for your club), and you are responsible for your own bike riding. (ie. you are responsible to bike safety and follow ALL the rules of the road)

    Andrew.

  • Hi Andrew -

    Can you email me?

    thanks -

I created a website just to test the application, so no worries about wrecking anything.

  • Hi Andrew -

Brian McDonald again. I'm getting there, but I run into troubles when a member of my club has no record on a segment, or home city/state fields.

I commented out the home city and state fields in the cron-script, but if a member doesn't have a recorded time for a segment, I get a stack overflow and the whole thing stops.

Any help would be appreciated - and it's a great start!

    Thanks

Is it the cron-script that gives the error message? Can you send me the error message that you are getting?

  • Hi Andrew -

If only Strava had a friendlier messaging component.

Can you try to email me again?

    bamcdonald27(at)hotmail(dot)com? That's the right address.

In the meantime - here's the error

Warning: Illegal string offset 'id' in /home/shakercycling/shaker-cycling.com/stravacron/cron-script.php on line 42

Warning: mysql_fetch_array() expects parameter 1 to be resource, boolean given in /home/shakercycling/shaker-cycling.com/config.php on line 287

    and on and on...

  • Subsequent to the start of this thread some 17 months ago, exactly NOTHING has been done by Strava to make it happen. Ellie has popped in briefly a few times to appease the restless members that are desperately crying out for this feature with soothing (read empty) words, but there is absolutely no substance to her (or Strava's) input. It's as if they don't give a hoot about our concerns, or that people are leaving in droves to alternative applications like Endocrappo.

ANYONE HOME STRAVA? Care to provide us with REAL progress feedback, instead of blowing smoke every six months?
