Add Trail Running as a Run type tag

I want to be able to differentiate road running from trail. I'm flabbergasted that I'm the first to suggest this.

  • Strava is a joke. They couldn't care less about their user base. They for example rather spend hundreds and hundreds hours fine tuning their so called "moving time" algorithm that does it all wrong anyway, when no one even wants it in the first place. If I run for 45 minutes I would like it to show 45 minutes. That cannot be such a hard algorithm to figure out???

Please add trail running as a tag, but more importantly have elapsed time as an option. Moving time just doesn't make any sense and calculates it so badly it's not even funny.

I can only say if everyone start adding support tickets maybe they will notice? But prob not, as they don't even read those.

  • Elapsed time is always shown there as an option, what are you talking about?  If it's a race, entire time is shown, and that makes complete sense.   And running is running, what would a tag do exactly?  Tell others that someone ran a trail or road?

  • I email Strava support last week about the trail running feature and got this;

    Hi Mic,
Thanks for your feedback you're not alone in this request.
I think adding more tags for run types is a great idea, and something we'll consider.

So it's been over 2 years since the initial request, how about an update.

  • Strava Support - how about a response on this simple request that has been floundering out here 2.5 years?

  • That would be great!

  • Just started trail running, and bit amazed that I can't separate it from 'the usual' road running. Add please.

  • Strava, any update on this?

  • I wanted to add that this morning I received another invitation from Strava to join a free 30 day premium membership trial. My reaction was like this - has Strava recognized Trail Running as a sport separate from running, has it addressed the moving time vs. elapsed time issue? No? Then I wouldn't even bother becoming a premium member. There is nothing in it for me worth paying for.

  • I was a premium member but haven't renewed as options to differentiate beween road and trail runs is still not an option. I'd also like an option for parkrun. It's bizarre that strava still hasn't dome anything to address these requests over the last three years!! They obviously are not interested in what customers require! Surely additional options or  the choice to add your own category acnnet be that difficult!!!

  • I can identify my run as a trail run in Garmin Connect but not on Strava, which is usually the superior app of the two.

Trail running is slower than road running, different skills are needed... I would really like to differentiate the two kinds of running that I do somehow.

With trail running becoming so huge in recent years, I'm really surprised this is not an option yet.

  • Hi, I agree!

I need to identify run and trail running !

  • I'm not sure I agree with this addition. What do you call a run that is mixed trail and road? Many of my runs are mixed; I run across town to the hills and then go trail. So, I'd want the town segments to be compared against road runners, but the trail segments compared against the trail times. Or should all running segment types be lumped together? What about mixed segments? There's plenty of those about.

Furthermore, one person's off-road is another person's trail is another person's track. As someone else said, running is running, irrespective of the terrain.

One individual compared it to the 5 types of skiing. Well, there's only 4 types. Roller ski, nordic ski, back-country ski, alpine ski. The activity in each of those is completely different (alpine ski uses lifts to go up, backcountry is for hiking or skinning up and includes mountaineering), whereas running is always just running, maybe with some scrambling/climbing if you're really off-road, but it's still you in running shoes.

As for segment times; I thought moving time was only for the total run. Segment time is the total time from start to end including "non-moving" time. It must be, otherwise I could do a 1km segment in 10x100m sprints with 10 minute break between each sprint and smash the record.

The argument about moving time doesn't make sense to me, just select "race" and that should solve it.

I think this would be a bad addition, as it'll just confuse the segments.

  • Having said that, it could be added as a run type. Then all the segments would still fall under "running".

  • I'd say segments should be shared not only between road and trail running, but also between other forms of bipedal movement - walking, hiking, snowshoeing. The current separation of segments between running and hiking makes little sense. I do both occasionally and and see duplicated segments on popular hiking trails, and times are not that different between running and hiking segments - top places in hiking segments would certainly require running and many entries in running segments could be characterized as fairly slow walking.

As for recommendation to tag my runs as races, please don't suggest that! Race tagging is for real races. That is supposed to mean that I put a substantial effort into the run, not that the estimated time should be used.

  • Robert, I see your point, however I think you are failing to see why we are requesting this type of run identity.  Often times, when you are trail running you find yourself walking up steep vertical climbs where strava running as it is tends to auto pause because it does not pick you up moving forward, but you are still climbing vertically. Working harder than you would if you where running normally. You may embark on a 2 hour non stop run, up and down mountains, but your strava will read less time, and less % of that run will be recorded under the current run identity. ,

  • Almost a year later and I too am begging strava to stop discriminating against trail running. It's just plain weird. Please add it already! I'm sure it would take your developers 10 minutes.

  • c'mon Strava, it has to be trivial to add. I get it may not be your highest priority, but seems like a cheap way to win some customers, no?

  • This is badly needed. I have to mark training runs as 'race' just because Strava wants to auto-pause the hills.

  • With all the recent updates Strava has made, its quite surprising that they haven't added trail running.

Maybe they're working on a formula / algorithm?
