Add Trail Running as a Run type tag

I want to be able to differentiate road running from trail. I'm flabbergasted that I'm the first to suggest this.

  • PLEASE add trail running as a running tag!  Tons of different ski options, but no trail running option!

  • I would like to add possibility to make own additional tags. I would use trail, cross, road for make differences in my workouts.

  • Thanks for the feedback on better categorizing Trail Running as a run type on Strava. Be sure to click the "Me Too" button to add your vote to this feature suggestion. Please keep your feedback coming!

  • This is ridiculous Strava!  Why don't you just make the field customizable, so people can tag their activities to be whatever they want.  Trail running is huge, but you're leaving us all dangling here because you're not willing to add a little tag?  This would take you guys 5 minutes on the backend, if that!  Just do it already.

  • While you are about it. Please tighten up the non auto pause. I find Strava answers auto pauses when climbing steep hills even when I don't want it to autopause.

  • To add to the previous comment, it isn't unusual to hit pace as low as 40-50 minutes/mile when climbing really steep hills. There are two reasons for that. First is the natural slow down due to a technical steep terrain. Second - GPS devices measure horizontal projection of the movement, so, for example, on a 45 degree slope, a GPS would measure about 70% of your actual speed. I don't know what the threshold for "not moving" is but it seems Strava hits it often enough when trail running in mountains.

  • To solve the problem, it would be great if the guys at strava can create a race mode for all activities much like what Garmin allows you to do where your time is your time. No auto pause at all.

  • The Race tag already exists, alongside Long Run.

  • Great. Thanks. And where exactly is that on the iPhone app. Can't find it anywhere.

  • Trail running is an emergent category that needs to be here, however, it should be included as a stand alone with the option of tagging as race, long run, etc. for example I recently competed in a trail run that ascended to 4,000 + feet. The mile times are much different with this type of run. A potential add to this would be to include a time per vertical foot ratio.

  • I would love a trail run feature. But even more important, we need a way to turn off the "moving time". If I ran for 45 minutes, I don't want Strava to say 41 minutes! I did actually run for 45 minutes. Stravas algorithms are so very bad they make this site useless. There is a "race" tag, but the only thing that does is changing the title of the activity. All stats and comparisons are still using the so called moving time. Please please please, give a way turn off moving time. It's just not working.

  • Strava folks...you have asked for feedback, and you have dozens of people here and in other requests asking for a trail running option for running entries.  This is not hard to implement unless your design is just archaic.  What gives?  What are you people doing?  Should we shift our attention to other platforms that listen?

  • I agree with Stanislav C. about the elapsed time.  When I first started running, it was on trails.  My speed was so slow that at times Strava thought that I had stopped moving entirely, when in fact, I was running at a walking pace.  I'm just fast enough now that my elapsed and moving times are almost the same.  The problem with the moving vs. elapsed times arises when route times are compared. On the early runs, my elapsed times and moving times were so different, it appeared that I was running much faster than I really was.  As a result, the "PR" for my usual route occurred on a day when I was running particularly slowly!  The real PR for that route is unacknowledged. The most frustrating thing about it is the fact that I cannot edit it.  Maybe one day, I will run that route as fast as Strava thinks I did, but I doubt it. It's a trail, after all.

  • It's amazing that this feature still hasn't been implemented. Like others have mentioned here and in numerous other threads in which people are asking for very basic features, it's this complete lack of response to customer requests that is preventing me from seriously considering a paid membership.

  • Elapsed time is always shown there as an option, what are you talking about?  If it's a race, entire time is shown, and that makes complete sense.   And running is running, what would a tag do exactly?  Tell others that someone ran a trail or road?

  • I was a premium member but haven't renewed as options to differentiate beween road and trail runs is still not an option. I'd also like an option for parkrun. It's bizarre that strava still hasn't dome anything to address these requests over the last three years!! They obviously are not interested in what customers require! Surely additional options or  the choice to add your own category acnnet be that difficult!!!

  • I can identify my run as a trail run in Garmin Connect but not on Strava, which is usually the superior app of the two.

Trail running is slower than road running, different skills are needed... I would really like to differentiate the two kinds of running that I do somehow.

With trail running becoming so huge in recent years, I'm really surprised this is not an option yet.

  • Hi, I agree!

I need to identify run and trail running !

  • Having said that, it could be added as a run type. Then all the segments would still fall under "running".

  • I'd say segments should be shared not only between road and trail running, but also between other forms of bipedal movement - walking, hiking, snowshoeing. The current separation of segments between running and hiking makes little sense. I do both occasionally and and see duplicated segments on popular hiking trails, and times are not that different between running and hiking segments - top places in hiking segments would certainly require running and many entries in running segments could be characterized as fairly slow walking.

As for recommendation to tag my runs as races, please don't suggest that! Race tagging is for real races. That is supposed to mean that I put a substantial effort into the run, not that the estimated time should be used.

  • Robert, I see your point, however I think you are failing to see why we are requesting this type of run identity.  Often times, when you are trail running you find yourself walking up steep vertical climbs where strava running as it is tends to auto pause because it does not pick you up moving forward, but you are still climbing vertically. Working harder than you would if you where running normally. You may embark on a 2 hour non stop run, up and down mountains, but your strava will read less time, and less % of that run will be recorded under the current run identity. ,

  • Almost a year later and I too am begging strava to stop discriminating against trail running. It's just plain weird. Please add it already! I'm sure it would take your developers 10 minutes.

  • 4 years since the initial request and still not added. How weird! I'd really like to be able to differentiate as running on roads is so different from running trails.

  • This is badly needed. I have to mark training runs as 'race' just because Strava wants to auto-pause the hills.
