Correct and Edit bad GPS points in an Activity

Occasionally I've had problems with my cycling GPS data, and have been getting spikes and spurious readings which result in strange route fits, and miscalculation of actual distance traveled (usually overestimated). Are there any plans to allow for manual pruning or manipulation of bad GPS data points by the user, thereby allowing Strava to "fit" the route more closely to the actual ride? Obviously, my phone is the culprit for the bad data, but it would be really useful to have the ability in Strava to either 1) remove/edit the wonky GPS points, and/or 2) to fit/nudge the route manually to existing roads on the map when the route is not properly tracked.

I've heard that other cycling apps can do this, but I don't have any experience with these. I think it would be very helpful for those of us who want our Strava logs to reflect our actual mileage :) I realize it's probably easier said than done, and of course this would effectively kill any segment stats in the affected area. But since I use Strava mostly for mileage and mapping, and less for segments (though I do use and enjoy these), I wouldn't be as concerned about the effects on the segment calculations.

Anyways, thanks for considering this. Keep up the good work!

  • Why does Strava not give you a option to lock route to roads. In the same was it does when you are trying to plan a route.

I had a problem while doing hill reps the other day (very very slow hill reps) the first trip up the segment was moved from the road so didn't count, and then every subsequent segment after that took me slightly higher even though my start and finish point was the same every time. i gained a extra 50 m over the coarse of a hour.

If you average 118 mph, I want to talk to you about how you train!  ; )

  • It's ironic that Strava is the most inaccurate app of the several I use for run tracking, and yet is also the one app that does not let you do anything about it. While instagram pics are a nice addition to the activities, it's this basic need that goes on unaddressed. Unfortunately, I let my premium membership expire as there appears to be little interest by Strava in fixing this for their customers.

  • Strava NEED to amend their current software so that users can edit there overall distance and time, to correct any GPS or other reception glitches. However, as Elle has mentioned several times, Strava are not going to fulfil this generic request which is very disappointing.

  • Yes, I have seen Elle's comments.  Doesn't change the need, or the fact that many of us are going to continue trying to beat this into the ground.

  • Adding my vote for an edit feature, or ability to lock a route to existing roads or previous laps. My phone died during a 75 mile ride yesterday; by the time I had gotten it recharged, I had a "straight line" discontinuity in distance and time, and lost 12.5 miles of the ride in Strava. Perhaps it would be possible to duplicate the ride, then edit the start and finish of each one, and stitch them together in the middle? Thanks.

  • Another vote for this, apparently tonight I ran through a lake and then round in circles and got a world record km!

  • Absolutely!  There is so much to like about Strava, but some things that just need to be improved.  This is one of them.

  • My heart rate monitor sent a few wrong points, and it has registered my max rate as 190 while it was actually 158. There should be a way to correct this. Thanks!

  • Today my 6.3 mile run was interpreted by Strava as 7.3 miles!!  So I deleted the activity and entered it manually.  Come on Strava, it's time to address this already!!!

  • Today I've decided to go for a MTB bike ride for the last time this year. 30km with 500m elevation took me 2hrs. I''ve especially focused on one segmet, which is 3km long with 5% ascent (+150m). My best time so far was 19 minutes. Best time is 18.02. I did my best today, and the STRAVA gave me 44.01minutes!!! obviously because of inaccurate GPS data. Screw you STRAVA! My best guess is, that the time could have been between 18.5- 19 minutes, but certainly not 44.01. It would take me approx 440minutes than to drive all the 30 km according this strange math. Please fix the GPS! Thank You!

  • I had this difficulty, lost about 1/3 of my ride. Found a wonderful Mac tool called Adze that allowed me to simply add in all the points visually. It took me about 15 mins to fix the issue. You can try it here:

  • No Adze for Windoz, but I found a couple of similar apps.  Maybe I'll give them a try...

  • I was hoping by upgrading that if be able up edit incorrect information but it seems unless I manually load the run (cycle) then I can't change the incorrect info. Not much point having the upgrade so will probably revert back to the basic free version.

  • I'd love this feature too! My run always seems to have an element of a 'funny 5 mins' somewhere and a 6.2km run turns into 7km! This is really unhelpful as it's saying my pace is much quicker than it actually is! My sister recommended Strava as that is what she uses and I love that it knows your moving time. I used to use runkeeper and with that app you can sort out the dodgy map points which is great, I'm so fed up with untrue results from today I'm going back to runkeeper!

  • +1 for Adze.  It takes a couple of minutes to get oriented in the app, but it was a great quick fix for a route that had one point about 15 miles away from the rest of the route.

  • Really Strava? This is core to your whole business model. How can you be ignoring so many comments. Clearly a disgruntled user base that is either using 3rd party software or moving providers entirely. Woeful.

  • I am moving from Runkeeper to Strava and this is a feature that I thought was included already in Strava. In general I like this app more than Runkeeper but I agree that is necessary this functionality to modify bad results catches from our phones. +1

  • Both phones and GPS watches can experience GPS related tracking issues/glitches.

And what's also frustrating (besides not having any way to correct for it natively within Strava - besides the crop tool which really doesn't help) is that Strava makes any GPS glitch twice as worse as on Garmin Connect, etc.  A 0.25 mile glitch on Garmin Connect usually shows up as 0.6 - 0.8 miles on Strava.  And where Garmin Connect will at least let you edit your overall time or distance, Strava just forces you to live with it.

If Strava adds the ability to edit overall distance/time, then I will immediately renew my premium subscription, but until then I just can't do it.
