Correct and Edit bad GPS points in an Activity

Occasionally I've had problems with my cycling GPS data, and have been getting spikes and spurious readings which result in strange route fits, and miscalculation of actual distance traveled (usually overestimated). Are there any plans to allow for manual pruning or manipulation of bad GPS data points by the user, thereby allowing Strava to "fit" the route more closely to the actual ride? Obviously, my phone is the culprit for the bad data, but it would be really useful to have the ability in Strava to either 1) remove/edit the wonky GPS points, and/or 2) to fit/nudge the route manually to existing roads on the map when the route is not properly tracked.

I've heard that other cycling apps can do this, but I don't have any experience with these. I think it would be very helpful for those of us who want our Strava logs to reflect our actual mileage :) I realize it's probably easier said than done, and of course this would effectively kill any segment stats in the affected area. But since I use Strava mostly for mileage and mapping, and less for segments (though I do use and enjoy these), I wouldn't be as concerned about the effects on the segment calculations.

Anyways, thanks for considering this. Keep up the good work!

  • Strava I'd give you a million dollars if I had it for you to let me edit my overall time and distance. What do you say??

Since I don't have a million dollars I'd at least purchase a premium subscription.

  • Ken, I'm not a fan of being forced into paying to be able to fix a fault with a product.

  • It's incredible that I cannot change date and hour to a wrong uploaded (automatic from Garmin connect) activity....

  • I had that problem today, showed a path I did not travel, messed up my mileage.

  • Today Strava stopped recording a ride a few miles short of the actual finish. Phone battery had plenty of juice. This is exactly why a ride editor feature would be useful; for when Strava screws up.

So, back to MapMyRide, which does let you edit your rides. Which, btw, is also nice for getting actual distances on rides or runs on trails with a lot of switchbacks. Strava tends to record the route as much shorter because it is only recording certain points, which usually don't correspond with your actual turns.

  • A sad state of affairs.  My stats are also goosed.

Can anyone from Strava confirm whether this is being worked on or whether it's still in the wilderness?

  • Why can't Strava Route's be modified to import the run/cycle and then let the user modify, I imagine could be tricky if there are lots of dots.

  • Same problem.  strava recently said i did a 16km run (was only 9km) and i did each of the first few km in like 2 min a km...then it settled down and did it properly for the rest.

  • Seriously, Strava. Get it together.

  • As far as I can see you already have the highly demanded tool up and running. Just make it possible to use the route tool to update and optimize the GPS track manually. And if there is already a route just use this instead of the original GPS track automatically – after asking for permission. Both of it should be doable in a short amount of time launch it as a beta.

  • +1 wanting this feature

  • I just want the miles to be correctly recorded. Since my Garmin died mid ride, I tried using the strava app on my phone. Unfortunately it stopped recording very early into the ride and I started it up again near the finish. The end result is a straight line between when it stopped and started recording again. I've tried using SNAP to edit the waypoints, but it doesn't work.  Would love to see a tool that allows for a manual fix to missed data recording.

  • Stop worrying about people using an edit feature to cheat and worry about making the app useful. People already cheat. First thing I noticed when I tried Strava is how many segments have fastest times set by some unknown person who is minutes faster than a local rider whom we all know is the fastest around (as in, get a clue, dude turning on Strava when you drive up to the Maroon Bells; we all know you aren't faster than Tejay van Garderen).

  • I recently ran a 15km trail race and my Suunto Ambit 2S recorded it as 14.97km.  As it was one of my fastest 15km's I wanted it to be recorded under my best efforts.  Long story short, Strava does not allow you to fix it as pointed out in this post.  Luckily, by making use of other free online services, I was able to correct it (https://www.strava.com/activities/768088561).

    -  Export as gpx from Movescount or Strava or whatever service you used to record it.

    -  Delete activity from Strava.

    -  Use https://tapiriik.com/ to sync activities between different services including runkeeper

    -  Select activity in Runkeeper and use the Edit function (https://runkeeper.com/user/686482512/activity/891957213?tripIdBase36=er1ql9&activityList=false&)

    -  You can't just change the distance figure so I moved my start and finish GPS points both a bit until the distance showed 15km

    - Export as gpx and upload in Strava and done.

By the way, if you want to compare all your best estimates for various distances in a convenient way, make use of http://stravabestefforts.com/.

  • +1 for wanting this feature.  Strava paused recording a third of the way into a ride.  If I cannot edit, it would be nice to sync with Endomondo / UA Record and so I can then delete the bad Strava data.

  • +1 for the same feature. Most other run tracking apps I've used allow me to edit the route when my phone dies part way through a run. I'm puzzled why Strava doesn't think it is a priority.

Current workaround is GPX export, and import into Runkeeper or similar which will let you edit and re-export. Then delete your Strava item and import the new GPX file.

    (messy, but it does work)

  • This is one of the only things I hate about Strava. To get around this I will export the GPX to Runkeeper, edit the GPS points there, re-export, and re-import into Strava.

It's not perfect but it gets the job kind of done.

This and the inability to share activities with friends as their activities are two major spots on the face of Strava.

  • I changed to Strava from Runkeeper on the recommendation of friends.  Strava is a far inferior product.  I can't believe that you cannot edit a map when the GPS stuffs up, this is standard on many other apps, including Runkeeper (which is half the price too).  I have had problems lately with the GPS not recording accurately so it looks like I am superman flying over houses, but I can't edit the map to correct this.

Come on Strava, get into the 21st Century and add this feature.

  • Let's see... this has been posted on since 2014.  You have your answer.  They don't give a shit.  It's more important to them to be able to incorporate selfies than something that's really useful.  I switched to Ride with GPS.  Maybe you should look at other options.
