Allow me to tag Runs as 'with baby jogger'

NB if you do want this feature added, please click the "upvote" so that the people at Strava will be able to judge its relevance!

So, I recently started using Strava.

These days, my time to run coincides with the time that I take care of Tisa, our 10-month old daughter. Luckily, ever since we have purchased a jogging stroller these two things are possible to combine. To a certain extent at least.

While I really enjoy running with the 'jogger', it is not exactly the same as running. Of course. You're pushing a stroller, you can't really use your arms, or run at full stride. Likewise, running with a jogger makes you less 'agile', so crossing streets, or moving onto and off the sidewalks causes your speed to drop to zero. And I may be working my butt off pushing the jogger up even a slight hill, but still I will not be able to match the speed of the person who just started running last month. Naturally, this is reflected in speed, and therefore, my ego starts to complain.

I think adding 'run with baby jogger' as an activity on Strava could be welcome for people like me. For three reasons (from least to most important):

  1. it will do some justification as to why my splits are twice as slow as they used to be.
  2. it will allow me to compare my times against other 'baby joggers', somewhat like the age groups.
  3. it will let me explore where other 'baby joggers' go for their workouts, allowing me to discover new routes that are baby-jogger-friendly.

I realize the demand for this feature could be very small. But who knows, perhaps you have already received more of these requests. And I could imagine it would be relatively easy to incorporate into the Strava platform.

That's it.

With kind regards, Maarten

  • 50% of my runs last year had 1-2 kids in a stroller - this year is looking about the same. Shoot, I even raced a 10k with two kids in the stroller last year.

I always mention stroller in the description, but would love to be able to have an official tag & stroller adjusted pace (I just mentally subtract 30 seconds a mile right now as an approximation).

Just tagging it as a stroller run is the big request, but if you want to take it further, I've actually got 2 strollers and since I have 3 kids, there are 5 different combination of kids. It is very different running with my two oldest, who bring the stroller to nearly 100lbs than running with just my youngest where the stroller is ~50 lbs. It would be nice to let me add 'gear' options like I can with my bikes, so I can easily compare similar runs to see progress.

  • We now have canoe, yoga, wheelchair, snowshoe, rock climb, CrossFit etc, so why on earth do we not have buggy running (single and double option needed) as an option for activity?

  • Please add this feature. I now do all of my runs with the buggy, and I’m now doing about 35 miles a week. I’ve also done a half marathon and a 10k with my son. Would be great to see an option for bike trailer too.
    Thanks sarah

  • This is such a needed feature! I'd love a way to be able to sort my runs with the stroller AND my biking with the trailer. Towing/pushing 40+ lbs takes a toll on my pace!

  • My stats are now useless without this option. Seriously, how much coding would this take to sort out!? Angry Dad.

  • I’ve just seen your official response and am completely at despair how it’s been shut down so easily? The original comment was that this was discussed at Strava by parents and had some chance for future, but clearly not?

How are these activities more suitable for Strava than buggy running, particularly things like rock climbing, yoga and weight training/CrossFit?

    Alpine Ski
    Backcountry Ski
    Crossfit
    E-Bike Ride
    Elliptical
    Handcycle
    Inline Skate
    Nordic Ski
    Rock Climb
    Roller Ski
    Row
    Snowshoe
    Stair Stepper
    Yoga

  • Dear Strava
You’ve managed to team up with parkrun- fantastic! If you look at the amount of people that add “with he buggy” etc on their parkruns you’ll see just how popular buggy running is! Please add this as a feature, it would make so many of us sleep deprived endorphin seekers happy!

  • I would also very much appreciate some way to distinguish runs with and without the buggy. With many many parents running with buggies and running increasing in popularity, I think it would be a much used feature.

  • Please can buggy run be added to Strava, there are thousands of us running regularly with single and double buggy’s training, at park runs and at official races it would be so amazing if we could log these seperate to our ‘solo’ runs!!

    Thank you

  • As the original poster has pointed out above; the ability to record a 'buggy run' will be beneficial to those of us new to buggy running and looking for accessible routes.
Not only that but it is harder than running without and as such there is a huge variation in my running times.
To be able to sub categorise this would be wonderful.
Please reconsider your decision and please add Buggy running into Strava 😊

  • Last week I ran 38km out of my total 65km with my daughter in her buggy - that’s over 50%. At present I put #buggyrun in the title, being able to separate as Gear or Type would make this so much easier to track! Come on Strava please add this!

  • Yes buggy run with a 3 year old and 7 month old at the moment so would be great to have this option

  • Please can a buggy running option be added. It is really frustrating not to be able to differentiate between buggy runs and solo runs when looking at pace etc. There are so many different options and this is such an obvious thing to add that I really don’t understand why it still is not available. Please listen to the feedback above!

  • Just got an email from Strava, though I don't see it on this comment thread (yet):
"Thanks for adding your comments and concerns. We do read through the forum to assess what our users would like to see added. Right now, we don't have plans on adding this feature in the near future.
    -Jess"

    My response:
It's understandable that parents with strollers might not be your target market right now.  After all, who really cares about being the fastest dad pushing a double stroller?  Kids vary so much in size, weight, bathroom breaks, etc.  I think most of us are just looking for an easy way to sort our runs.

So perhaps I could suggest a simple variation on this feature?  Update the documentation for the existing "Commute" tag to make it clear that this tag is for any sort of run that you believe is encumbered with extra gear (backpack, stroller, trailer, etc).

I'm going to start tagging my stroller runs as "Commute" and see how it works.

  • Please add this, or at least the ability to tag a run similar to the Commute tag, so that the extra effort is counted.  Far more important to add features like this and others that support the Strava running and cycling community than adding loads of new activity types and becoming FB!

  • I would definitely use this feature. Its currently very difficult to compare buggy runs or see when I've run a 'buggy' pb as stats are mixed in with my solo running. Buggy running is a completely different ball game to usual running and it would be great to have the option to treat it as such.

  • This would be a simple and helpful fix to implement - surely at least a tag for run, if not a separate activity would please a lot of people.

  • I'd like stroller (where you can add the weight of the stroller + child), but also bike trailer.

The Strava estimated cycling power is based on rider + bike weight, so when you add 60 lbs of trailer/child(ren), the power estimate is way too low.

  • I would like to see this added as an item on the app - I mean, you have ‘snowshoe’ - surely that can’t be as popular as buggy running?!
Not like it’s that difficult to implement now is it? Sort it out strava and stop making a meal out of it!

  • Disappointed to see that the official response is that this won't be a go. Honestly, this is an amazing idea and can't see why you wouldn't want to explore this as an option. I know the official response was only months ago, but please reconsider.

  • This is especially of interest as I just paid for Strava.  The Fitness/Fatigue stats are way off because of my stroller runs.  The algo doesnt know my HR is high BECAUSE Im pushing a stroller.  Strava should allow me to tag a run a stroller run and omit those (or be smart enough to know that a stroller run increases HR).  I doubt Ill renew Strava without being able to tag a stroller run, because it akes the analysis pack too inaccurate.

  • Yes, I agree with the other poster -- I will not consider paying for Strava until a stroller option is added. Many of my runs are pushing my toddler in a stroller and the data is pretty useless if I can't differentiate. I'm pretty disappointed that Strava isn't considering adding this function and I am looking into different apps to use.

  • Such a shame to read you aren’t even considering this Strava. Getting back to exercise after becoming a parent is incredibly hard. Being able to track that progress in a meaningful way would be so very helpful. If you can manage to let people show the trainers they are wearing on a run or say a ride is a commute, how hard can it be to tag a run as a buggy run rather than a normal run? Supporting people at a time when they are most likely to stop exercising and therefore stop setting a great example to their kids is so important. Massively recommend you take a day to read Anna Kessell’s Eat Sweat Play then reconsider how you’re helping Mums (and Dads) to exercise.

  • Ageee with all of the above. Had a great buggy run on a ‘standard’ route today but all my comparisons are meaningless. How hard would it be to at least add a tag?! Why ‘commute’ but not ‘stroller’? It’s not just the absence of the function but the attitude of the response and the lack of any engagement/ explanation that’s really offputting.

  • I agree this would such an easy thing to add which would make such a difference. As above I would also look at paying for premium if I could track buggy runs separately

  • As a single parent most of my runs are out buggy running with my toddler. It would be great to easily distinguish my runs a bit more and this feature would be awesome!

  • A large proportion of my runs are with my running buggy (carrying my nearly 2 year old daughter!!), especially now marathon training has begun. I’d LOVE to be able to select this a variant activity of running! Come on Strava, move with the times!!!
