Make Strava Routes available in Full Screen mode

Maps can be expanded in some views but not others, and in those cases the map is usually so small as to be nearly useless. Maps should always be expandable to full browser size.  This is basic UI consistency stuff and IMO should be a priority. I often find myself duplicating and editing maps simply so I can expand them and view them properly.

Also, Google Street View should be available on all map views but is not. Once again, this is basic UI consistency stuff.

  • Hi Carey,

I believe all maps are available in full screen view on Activity pages. Can you tell us where else you would like to see full screen maps specifically?

  • Go to any route, yours or someone else's. You can't expand the map unless you edit it, and if you do that, now you can't drop down into Street View.  You should be able to expand any map from any page, and drop into Street View from any map as well.

In fact, if this motivates you any, I still use MapMyRide to overcome these limitations. ;-)  I will download the GPX from Strava and import it into MapMyRide just so I can view it full screen and use Street View anywhere.

  • Hi Carey,

So it seems like your request is specific to Strava Route pages including the ability to go full screen?

I'll certainly pass along this request!

  • Yeah, I guess that sums it up. Maps on routes shouldn't work any differently than maps anywhere else.

  • Id like to see a maximize-nutton on segments also. In fact there should be a maximize-button on all maps in all views.

  • Yes, maps are available in full screen when they are activity maps, but NOT when they are maps of routes created in Route Builder.

For example, the first image is an example of a "route" page. Notice the option for street view is available in the top left corner of the map, but no full screen button is available. Only way to go full screen is to "edit" the route. Sometimes I would just like to view a route and be able to click around the map without extending/changing the route which is what happens in edit mode.

When you open the editor, yes, the map goes full screen but you immediately lose the ability to use street view (notice the little yellow street view man has disappeared). This is another critical deficiency in the UI. Being able to drop the "Street View Man" on a road when plotting a route is an excellent way to see what typical road conditions/traffic are like, which can determine whether I'll take a specific road or try another one.

In summary, full screen maps should be available as an option for VIEWING a route (not just editing) and street view should be available in editor mode.

  • Sorry, I just realized the newest comments are at the top of the page, rather than the bottom. I now see this has been at least "passed on". I will admit I'm not a computer programmer so I can't comment on exactly how difficult implementing these changes are, but it seems like a simple "enable full screen button on map" or "enable street view on map" option should be available.

Having to have two windows open when creating a route (one Strava window for plotting and one Google Maps window for street view) is kind of a pain.

  • I can't believe that after almost a full year this feature hasn't been implemented. This is an expected feature in any application that displays maps, so I wouldn't even call it a missing feature. I would call it a bug.

I frequently find myself exporting GPX from here and importing it into mapmyride.com just so I can view maps full size. In view of that, I can't justify renewing my premium membership here. Yes, this flaw really is that big.

  • I don't know how Strava judges which "new feature requests" are most important, but it's unlikely this is going to ever get done sitting at 4 "likes". Seems like such a simple fix, it's a shame that it's gone unnoticed.

  • Welp, still can't view routes in full screen, and now Street View is gone completely. Way to go Strava.

  • Agree - I would like to have "full screen" map option for Routes and activities marked as "Race". See attached images - missing "full screen" buttons on maps.

    Route page:

    Race page:

  • COMPLETELY agree!! To be sure, I don't see how to view a full page map for anything - my own activities included...

  • +1 - the small map view on route pages makes a route very hard to evaluate / study at a glance. I see that routes are rendered full-width in the "Local" feature, but not for the normal route view. Please fix!

Wow, this is really disappointing.  I've been using MapMyRide for a year or so, but gotten fed up with it because the U/I is so inconsistent and ugly.  Decided to give Strava a try.  It's certainly a prettier app, but this seems like a show stopper.

I built a route I want to share with some friends.  Pretty much the first thing I noticed was that I couldn't figure out how to see the route in full-screen mode, except when logged into my own account where I can edit it.  Googling led me to this forum thread.  Much disappointing.  Very missing.  So bummer.

I did figure out that somebody else with a Strava account could duplicate my route and then edit it.  That gets them full-screen mode.  But, really?  That's what you need to do?  And doesn't work at all if you don't have an account.

So, yeah, back to MapMyRide.  The U/I may be the dogs breakfast, but at least you have all the basic essential features you need.

Oh, yeah, there also seems to be no way to reverse a route.  Or maybe I just haven't found it yet?

  • Fully agree - I've created dozens of routes on Strava over the years and this is continuously vexing whenever I go back to review a route I've created. Plus bump up this enhancement request!

  • Close on 4 years now and still not improved.  Strava - you're starting to get left behind - you need to get stuff like this sorted out a lot quicker.  Does anyone from Strava read this forum?  Could you respond?

  • @Jess - This is an essential, basic feature of any site that hosts maps. Not a single one of your competitors has this problem. Only Strava. So yeah, after four years it's obvious I made the right decision to abandon my Strave account and move to mapmyride.

  • You have to wonder how many thousands of ride event pages have chosen to link to RideWithGPS rather than Strava on their event websites because linking to a Strava route would be utterly useless for informational purposes to the public.

Also, there's a safety issue here. I always text my wife a map to my route before heading out, in case I don't come back. Yesterday she pointed out that if she shared Strava's tiny route view with EMTs in an emergency, it would be next to useless. She asked me to start sending her my route from another service.

Please make route views usable in fullscreen mode. Thanks!

  • It's amazing that this has been an issue to thousands of Strava users for years now, but they can't implement this. It seems like a very easy change since it is available when viewing activities. I think the Strava programmers and the Microsoft programmers are one in the same. Ignore what their customers want.

  • This is pretty much an LOL moment for me. I pointed out this glaring flaw six years ago and Strava still hasn't fixed it. I only know this because I get an email whenever someone posts on this thread. I dropped my paid account five years ago because of this so it doesn't matter to me. Keep up the bad work, Strava! Your competitors love you for it.
