Add sub-Activity types: Road Bike, MTB, Elliptical

I have cross posted this into the 3 main feature request threads 1) filter segments by bike type 2) differentiate between bike type 3) add bike type, but I think it deserves its own thread as its lost in the noise of those other requests - and personally I think this could help meet the needs of those other feature requests.

When I say full support of SUB-ACTIVITY TYPE - e.g. Ride->Road Bike, or Ride->MTB or Ride->Elliptical, Run->SteepleChase, I mean the sub-type should work with segment leaderboard filtering, club setup (and auto filtering), challenges etc

The main thing I want is to be able to compare my rides on my ElliptiGO (Elliptical Cycle) with riders on normal bikes AS WELL AS only have ElliptiGO rides in our club. This would be really useful and I don't see why it is so hard - clubs and challenges can be set up with top level Ride or Run or Ski or whatever - and ALSO with sub-type if wanted. That way - normal 'how many miles ridden this month' challenges still show ALL sub ride types - but you could do a 'unicycle miles' challenge on a month - or elevation gain or whatever. When you set up clubs - you should also be able to specify major activity type - run/ride etc - AND subtype - that way a person can ride normal bike and elliptical or recumbent or whatever and have no pollution onto club boards. Clubs that don't care don't set the sub-type.

I think e-bikes should be a different activity and NOT a sub-type as assisted cycling (faster than fastest road bike) pollutes normal rides.

Finally - you should be able to filter any leaderboard by sub-type. BUT I don't believe in designating segments as road vs mtb vs whatever - the segment is the segment - its a route from A to B - its up to you how ride or run it - BUT the filtering by sub-type will get people the results they want.

  • I agree, it would be useful for us ElliptiGO owners to differentiate our ElliptiGO rides from normal bike rides!

  • GREAT feature request! I have 3 different types of bikes - road, hybrid, elliptical - and I like to keep data for each separately AND also have an aggregate total, for all of the reasons @Bill P stated.

  • I agree. It would be useful to filter activities and segments by bike type. It would be also good if you can accumulate filters. For example, By age AND by weight AND by bike type.

  • I agree .....please add a unicycle category

  • I would also love to have a ElliptiGO category added since it is not a bike or elliptical, it is both in one.

  • I also feel KOM & QOM should only apply to segments that is graded as a specific category climb. Other flatter segments should be KOS's or QOS's to distinguish between fast flat and climbing segments.

Also the different activity types can have different KOS's or QOS's (King/Queen of a Segment). Firstly what did you ride with.. Road bike, Single speed, Mountain bike, TT bike, Tandem bike... Secondly how was it done.. Solo ride, Group ride, Race, Motor pacing...  You can therefore have more than one KOS 's or QOS's on a specific segment depending on what and how the ride was done.

  • There should be a way to have recumbent bikes classified differently than standard road bikes.  TT bikes and motor pacing efforts could also have their own categories. The default KOM filter should show regular road bikes only.  People with other types of bicycles like recumbents should have their own leader boards where they can compare their times to people on the same bicycle type.

  • Some clubs are shops that offer both running and cycling, so it would be great to be able to segment leader boards, discussions, announcements and events by running/Cycling/Triathlon, and then cycling into road/mountain, runs into road/trail/track etc...

  • A different activity type for ElliptiGO would be great!!

  • Count me in support of ElliptiGO as an activity type. I hate seeing that all those dratted cyclists are so much faster on segments when they're riding entirely different machines. :-)

  • Updating with my latest post on this subject:

    Elle & Mark Shaw!,

[this is posted to the common threads on same topic]

It would be really useful if you could address the specific idea of properly using Ride *Subtype*. People get hung up about having a MTB vs Road category - which is sort of a red-herring - and also wouldn't be that useful (overall).

by keeping *Ride* for all things cycling (one 1 to many wheels), lying, sitting, standing etc - you have a common baseline / superset for all leaderboards and clubs (by default).

Then you add filters to leaderboards and to clubs for Ride *Sub-type* - this can be any of a number of things - Road, MTB, Unicycle, Trike, HPV, Recumbent, Elliptical.

When you upload a ride you either select sub-type directly - or link it to a value associated with your gear selection.

That's it. Don't worry about segment categorisation - anyone who rides it gets logged with their ride sub-type which can then be used to filter leaderboard.

One *nice* thing to do though would make it so that you can have multiple places on the leaderboard depending on the subtype - that is fair - its nice to see how fast you got up a ride on your MTB vs your road-bike - you don't have to add this - you could still figure it out by filtering - all your rides are still in there.

This would also stop people creating multiple accounts for the different bikes they ride (I know lots of people who do this so they don't mess up particular bike club data which is only for one type of bike).

I'm going to repost to the other common threads.

    Thanks

    Bill

  • ElliptiGO should be an activity type. If using the brand name isn't possible call it 'Stand-up Cycling' or something similar.

  • I also think it would be a good solution to subdivide rankings in more categories: Mountainbike, Road race, E-Bike ...

Think about this situation, you train hard, recieve a KOM on a Segment with your Mountainbike and just one day later a guy with his E-Bike catches the KOM... :)
    Not very funny at all...

  • Hi Mark A, sorry to say but obviously the Strava Team couldn't care what we think.

I asked a simmular question in 2015. Like you many other people did just that long before us...

All we can hope for is that somebody else will develop a new App that does have this function. I will be one of the first users to move over to that!!

  • I'd love to be able to identify what type of terrain a segment contains, as in tarmac dirt road, single track etc while in the segment explorer. But it looks like Strava isn't concerned with that improvement.

  • Still no proper use of Sub-Type:

Here's a common discussion I keep having with the 1000+ members of our Strava club:

Strava need to use the Sub-Type field. We would be Riding->Elliptical then we could filter ourselves easily on any leaderboard for any segment and set the club to be that Sub-Type only so you could road ride or MTB on Strava and it wouldn't effect anything on club leaderboards. I have written about this extensively in the past and have some suggestions on the Strava forums that have been up there for years with no action from Strava yet. Even moaned to the Strava CTO when he visited my office...

    >>What was their CTO's reason for not implementing it?

...well he said his people would look into it but it's a classic change management situation - they have 40 million users, 8 million activities per day so they are super conservative on any change. I think the sub type change could be done with complete backwards compatibility. By default everyone who has a 'ride' gets road Sub-Type. You then have option of running a new Sub-Type generator for old rides based on gear - where your gear can be assigned a Sub-Type (road by default). So if you make your Specialized Rockhopper a 'MTB' suddenly all your old rides with that bike then get Sub-Type of MTB (and any new ones that you have that gear set to default) - so all those people moaning for their own categorized MTB segments etc suddendly can filter on the Sub-Type for a segment and see only MTBs. The beauty of this is it doesn't change the underlying ride data. IT WOULD change the UI both on mobile and web. But there has been 1000's of people asking for road vs MTB for 6+ years and this way they can actually do it in a generic fashion which other bike types can also benefit from (or for that matter any activity with subtypes). I've posted all this many times but no progress from Strava that I'm aware o
