Hide/Unhide Segments Feature For Run Activities

Provide the same Hide/Unhide Segments feature as Ride activities for Run activities instead of just having the Starred Segments feature.

  • Yes, I agree this would be useful. Don't see why its different to a ride??

  • I would also like to be able to hide segments from runs.  Running in an urban area like London's Hyde Park, there are many semi-duplicate segments, as well as very short segments, that clutter activity.

  • I agree. I don't understand why they have 3 different pages for the activities (run, bike and other) with a quite large difference between the run and bike/other pages. The useful difference, speed vs pace, power in cycling, could be implemented on the same standard page. I cant find that now but the wrote one and half year ago that the were going to implement the hide/unhide feature for running.

I just found it frustrating that useful features is implemented for some activities but not all. When I run and bike and look at the segment information I can see my mean heart rate for that segment. When I xc ski I can't see my  mean heart rate for some reason. The hide/unhide feature is another difference and it is necessary to click more times on the run page to find the information about the segments.

Why don't they just use the same standard page (I think the bike page is best) and change the relevant parameters on that page instead of using 3 (or at least 2) different pages?

  • Would like to know why runners are getting short changed on this?

  • +1 for this feature.

BTW, you can hide running segments if you flag them for bad GPS data.  Maybe other reasons too, but that's the only one I've ever used.

To those suggesting this, or any other, feature is "easy" to support; unless you're qualified and able to see the relevant area's of Strava's code base, there's no way you can make that judgement.   It's easy for users and management folks to envision a feature like this and assume that, since it's available in one context, it would be easy to add in another.  The reality of it is there can be any number of technical barriers that prevent this.  Usually it's shortsighted architecture in the race-to-market phase that doesn't get cleaned up before more features are piled on top, adding complexity.  Combine this with how pissed users will get if you break or remove a live feature and you have pretty decent reasoning to hold off implementing something until you're confident it can be done safely.  TBH, I wouldn't be surprised if cycling was run on completely different infrastructure from the sports which were added later.

  • UP.

Dont understand why can unhide a run segment, but CANT hide it again. There are segments in my activities USELESS that i must see everyday.

  • Me too. I want to hide run segments. Is it possible?

  • Yes. I would like this feature as well, please!

  • This is just one of a number of obvious and relatively easy to implement things that the Strava team can't be bothered to implement.  I'm imagining the Strava team joking amongst themselves... "even if we do zero work from here on out, we won't lose enough premium subscribers to really be concerned."

There are lots of such requests... like the ability to reverse routes, that have been in the support forums for years with loads of "I'd like that as well, please" from the community - and zero action from Strava.  I'm starting to wonder how much I need the premium subscription... probably will just cancel it soon as most of the useful functionality I need is in TrainingPeaks and other apps.

  • Would also love this feature. I run in a high traffic area and there's a whole lot of segments I just don't want to see and don't care about.

  • Come on Strava, stop focussing on bullshit campaigns and get the basics right first.

    - Hide/unhide functionality

    - Rename segments

    - Automerge segments that are 95%+ identical

    - Check for bad elevation data when a segment is created

    -...

  • This is TERRIBLE that for three years people are asking you to for the ability to hide certain run segments and you guys do nothing!  Come on guys!  Please.

  • This seems frankly ridiculous. Thinking I could just do the same for running activities that I do for many cycling activities I wasted AGES trying to work out where the bloody 'hide' option was; it wasn't there. Now I find out this has been a problem people have been having for years and again Strava says a big FU to it's customers. It will be a miracle if I keep my premium subscription next year - this is far from the only issue Strava continues to ignore. At least RWGPS listens to feedback and does something to fix customer problems. Evolve or die.

  • I cancelled my premium membership last year. I wasn't using most of the "extra" features so it just felt like a waste of money.

No idea why this hasn't even acknowledged as an issue - nearly 5 years now...

  • Totally agree. There are some really poorly mapped run segments out there, would be great to hide them.

  • Why is this not implemented yet? There are some very silly running segments and no way to hide them!

  • Add me as another person who wants to be able to hide segments - in particular the segments which are 0.1km long and have names like "where my dog likes to drop a turd" that clutter up popular running trails.

I'm coming to the conclusion that Strava has enough premium subscribers and cash flow now that the management no longer cares about developing even the most obvious and easy to implement functionality of the site.  Which is sad.

  • I'll just re-iterate. In the beginning it made sense to have the auto-generated segments, at this point the vast majority of auto-generated segments are clutter. Would be nice if they would clean this up. I paid for a year of premium just to support the service, and when I emailed customer service it seemed that they had no plans whatsoever to improve the segments at all.

Their stock reply was "please leave a comment and if enough people leave comments we might give some attention to your ideas"

  • I had a ridiculous interaction with Strava customer service on this. Exemplified ignorance and disdain. Strava ignorance about their own IT and policies and disdain for what *paying* customers have to say. Looking forward to not renewing my premium subscription (or whatever it’s called now).

  • You must do this.  Not only are there poorly mapped segments, and duplicative segments - there are segments with offensive names.  Or annoying names.  I don't want to see them anymore.  Strava's one of the few things that I pay for but don't need.  Help me feel better about doing that!

  • Another year has passed without any changes...

Come on Strava, I guess this takes maybe one day of coding to implement this as you already have all that's needed based on cycling segments! Show some love for your running clients?

  • This has been frustrating me for a while, to come here and see YEARS worth of complains is even more depressing. Before i started using strava i assumed it was a industry leader due to it being so well known. Its obvious it wont be around too long if simple things like this are not fixed.
