Combine Nordic Skiing and Cross Country Skiing Activities

It is confusing to have two different activity types (cross country ski and nordic ski) for the same thing . This leads to two different leader-boards for the same activities. These two activity types need to be combined.

Also as others have suggested, it would be useful to have skating and classic as seperate activity types. As these really are two different activities. You could have "Nordic Ski -Classic", and "Nordic Ski-Skate" as the options.

  • Agree with the rational proposistions. Nordic Ski Classic and Nordic Ski Skate or XC Classic and XC Skate. Either way. Anyways, you and we all need to do something about the historicals.

Please implement asap. Would be nice to have a batch edit function to easily be able to change the historicals also.

Strava rules and please make it rule even more.

  • yes, two activity types should be combined.

but I think, skate and classic should not be seperated. Look at the times of the wasa run! A good classic runner is as fast like a good skate runner.

  • I fully agree that Nordic skiing and cross country skiing should be combined/merged. Because what is the difference...?

I do not agree that skating and classic technique should be split. For amateurs there is no difference. No point in making it more complex than necessary.

  • Well... for "elite" amateurs there might not be a difference between skate and classic times - I wouldn't know - but for the rest of us - you better believe there is a difference between skate and classic performance!

  • To the 2 latest comments; really there is a difference, both for amateurs and elite alike. Think of crawl and breast swimming.

For sub-elite down to the ordinary skier, skate will always be faster if you don't have any handicap that prevent you from doing the necessary movements. But honestly, I've never encountered anybody who hasn't been able to skate after some technique sessions. Please trust me on this one. Of course, if you've never tried skating there might be a difference, but that difference is due to the new movements and some basic muscle building that needs to be done. We all know how to swim breast, and probably the first times you try to adapt to crawl you will suffer because of the unusual technique in the water. That's why you have different disciplines in swimming, exactly as it's two different xc-disciplines.

As some elite and sub elite and everyday skiers will be relatively better at classical due to the technique fitting them better. But that's not getting the point. Skate is faster. Frank Mörl, your pointing to Vasaloppet to prove your point is not valid. At Vasaloppet, skate is forbidden. If you would allow skate, you would see that the top 500 skiers would have faster times at skate. (Look at the results from Skejtvasan - which unfortunately is removed from the program nowadays.)

So, as Strava is a GREAT tool for everything from everyday to subelite and even elite athletes, we really need to have the split on order not to make XC segments meaningless.

  • First of all, this thread is about strava handles nordic skiing tracked by a cellphone from nordic skiing tracked by a other device and than uploaded by a computer differently. This does not depend on the technique of the athlete, it's simply a technical issue strava produces depending of the different kinds of tracking.

Now to Erik Adeler: You can not compare Nordic Skiing by Swimming. What actually counts are the times you are able to run on a special track. To support my opinion, lets do some very direct comparison: On Feb, 21, 2015, Martin Weisheit won the Skate run of 15 km within 39min42sec. On Feb, 22, 2015, on the very same track, Martin Weisheit won the Classic run of 30 km within 1h22min8sec. Your can find the results for the Skate run here http://www.rennsteig-skilauf.de/index.php?option=com_rokdownloads&view=file&Itemid=114&task=download&id=85 and for the Classic run here http://www.rennsteig-skilauf.de/index.php?option=com_rokdownloads&view=file&Itemid=116&task=download&id=87. Please note, top 50 of these runs are professional, semi-professional or senior professional Nordic Ski athletes. Further, at Oberhof you can find some of the hardest Nordic Ski tracks all over the world.

  • This thread was created to merge 2 different activity types, yes, but users have correctly brought up the related and already proposed issue of separating skate and classic. Probably as most users agree to merge the activity types. We should both go to https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21073383-Separate-Nordic-Skiing-as-an-Activity-on-Strava-into-Classic-Skate to discuss further.

  • Hello everyone,

I want to let you know that we are working on this project! We're transitioning "cross country skiing" activities to "Nordic Skiing". We're not yet sure if we can similarly transfer Cross Country skiing segments to Nordic Skiing segments. I'll keep this thread updated on our progress.

  • Any news on this? Winter is coming..

Hope you can transfer segments as well, or perhaps make it possible to change activity type on a segment you've created?
