Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • No. Because Annual Koms are not in any way achievements, bwaha.

  • Neither are all-time KOMs.

  • Sorry @James, we don't have a page to display your Annual KOMs/QOMs/CRs like we do for all-time achievements (the My KOMs/QOMs/CRs page). Thanks for the feedback, and I'm sure we can consider this as a future improvement.

  • I actually liked the idea of the yearly achievements, it's just the execution of it that didn't work in my opinion.

For example, with the 2015 PR's, I'd have kept those available (but probably not bothered with 2nds and 3rds), but much like your all-time PRs, you would only have seen a medal after you had ridden the segment TWICE in 2015 (assuming you'd beaten your first time of course). You don't get PR medals whenever you ride a segment for the first time, so you shouldn't get the yearly award the first time you ride the segment each year either. That would have cut down on the amount of medals very quickly, yet still kept the functionality around for those of us who didn't mind it.

The yearly KOM's don't bother me as I'm not someone who'll ever get a KOM anyway - the only ones I'll ever hold are those where just 2 or 3 people have done a segment and I've accidentally stumbled across it (and even then, a local segment hunter typically soon comes and takes it from me). But maybe even these could have been changed by holding them off until 1st February or something - that way the 2015 leaderboard would have had time to build up some decent entries, so by the time the medals were first given out, it actually meant something other than "congratulations, you're the first person to ride this segment this year!"

  • Please bring back the annual personal achievement awards. Perhaps have a switch so people who don't want them can turn them off.  All I care about is my progress over the course of a year. I don't care at all about how I am doing now compared to how I was doing 4 years ago. (I sort of know I am getting slower--I just want to be able to see my improvement this year.)

  • Can you make the 2015 achievements just go away. Or at least make a way to turn them off. I don't care or want to see 2015 achievements on my rides. Just because i was the 1st one to ride something doesnt mean i need to see 8 KOM's for 2015 on my ride.

  • It's a great idea to have this "reset" of the leaderboards in addition to the overall, since many KOMs persist because they were set in group rides, in hellacious tailwinds, behinds trucks, etc. HOWEVER, as people are alluding to here, the way it's currently done leads to a fairly ridiculous proliferation of these awards at the beginning of the year. Wouldn't it make a lot more sense to have these new "hollow trophies" be for achievements that happen in the preceding 12 months, regardless of the calendar year, a rolling "recent achievement"? That would achieve the freshness of these awards, but without a big pulse of them that happens in the early months, when nobody has really ridden the segments yet. I think this change would make these awards much more interesting for people.

  • What would make the most sense is give users the option to shut it off! Here it is 4 months into the year and still many fake achievements showing up.

  • I agree with Ta Herrera : if we are stuck with the annual achievements system then please make it a rolling year, rather than a 1st January year. At least that way it would mean something, and any annual KOMs achieved by proriders out training with freak 70knot tailwinds would drop out after 12 months, opening up the annual KOM slot again.

What would make the most sense is give users the option to shut it off! I don't want to see that I rode this segment first and therefore I have a QOM.  That is crazy.

  • so this is gone? i noticed someone had a annual achievement so i pushed that 7 seconds i was behind to take number 1 and i don't get the achievement.

This is such a disappointment, my favorite segment is so old that it has a few road bikes on it, but there is no data that shows they weren't on the mountain bike trails.

i would be number 2 overall i assume without tracking down the top 3 times to see if they did the trail section with mountain bikes and had faster times than me, which im sure they do,

but i would of settled for a annual achievement, at least it felt good doing it.

strava, im done subscribing you need to clean up mountain bikes vs road bike segments and just quit being a disappointment.

  • Thank goodness.... who cares about an annual achievement you will hold for 3 days... or a few hours - POINTLESS and thank you STRAVE for listening! I was about to unsubscribe from my paying premium service if I had to go through another year of pointless achievements.

Yes, please work on cleaning up MT bike vs Road bike segmants

  • have you considered modifying your notification options? this is easily done for in the strava app for phones. it lets you toggle push notifications, email or both, or none for each individual item below

new followers, comments, kudos, lost KOM and friends joining.

things change over the time so instead of creating a new segment with the year on it (isn't there too many segments?), maybe annual achievements make more sense.

i guess im looking at it from a different perspective, and that is i don't come across 100 segments when i ride, only like 15. i can get it for guys in the city but why not disable notifications? or was it the losing it part that got people upset?

  • Well that's disappointing.

Was hoping to go out for a thrash and set a few times to challenge for this years annual kom, only to find you've deactivated it!  It seems you've listenen to the boring killjoys, there's money if us who enjoyed this feature.

Why not simply provide an 'opt out' for those disinterested in annual trophies?

I feel the value of my premium account has lessened today :(

  • DezzaT. I'm glad there gone, if you need to see how you rank this year use the provided filter. Unfortunately you won't get a worthless meaningless cup:(
Just because you are one of the first to ride a segment why do you feel you deserve a prize?

  • Sir Scratch,
    I am a real boy!
surely everyone likes to feel they have earnt their reward not just been given it for turning up?
I did not see one of those cups on anyone's ride for ages, it didn't really work.
I am looking forward to seing your rides in 2016 and being able to see your triumphs without them being buried in hollow crowns.
Happy new year and me it be filled with gold!

  • The annual achievement feature was great. I would like to have it back......

On the other hand, this gives third party developers an opportunity (if Strava allows it....)

Its not uncommon for compainies with a large marked share to stop listening to their customers :-(

  • Torbjørn Berger, although you are correct with your last comment, in this particular case Strava has thankfully bowed to the vast majority.

Now, if only they'd do the same regarding Google maps.....

  • Stuart Davis. Have you got any factual statistical evidence that Strava have bowed to the vast majority? Just asking out of interest as the achievement stuff doesn't really bother me either way.

  • Robert S. Lol, not officially. My comment is based on two assumptions - 1, assuming the comments on this forum (the clear majority are against) are representative of the general consensus, and 2, assuming Strava as a company wouldn't take all the feedback on board and opt to go with the minority.

Like all assumptions I would concede it is possible to be wrong, would you agree or disagree with those assumptions?

  • There's a flaw in both assumptions.......If the majority like the new achievements, they probably wouldn't feel the need to come on here and say so as they already have what they want. The people who don't like them come on here and protest. It appears that the majority of people who've entered the discussion on here are against them but it's impossible to assume that the majority of Strava users are against them. There will be a percentage who care not - me included. However.... the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

  • You are overlooking the fact that dishing out hollow trophies for being the first to ride a segment in January while you crawl back stuffed from a 10 mile epic ride is a bit pointless. I'm certain the majority of users of at least moderate intelligence would realise that.

The way Strava chose to implement it is the real issue, many have suggested a rolling 12 month system instead of a yearly reset, which would have made a bit more sense.

Anyway I'll shut up on the subject - except to say I think everyone, whether for or against, would agree that a user optional setting to use them or not would have been the best solution.

  • As one who looked forward to the annual achievements, I am disappointed. KOMs in Richmond, VA are spoiled by 100s of Pros making Richmond their September destination this year. (Worlds was awesome...)  I also found it exciting and motivating to go around and get as many Annual KOMs as I could in January.  If you can't take the cold, you don't deserve the Annual achievements.  And if you played your cards right, you could rack up multiple achievements on the same segment.  Oh the little pleasures this was to me.  Yes, it's lame, but guess what?  I am on the other side of 40, have to much work during the week and know my limitations.  Further, by taking away the annual achievements, you really lessen the value of the all-time achievements.  No longer, can you say - sure you got the top time in 2016, but my all-time KOM trumps your annual greatly. Now, it's stands alone and cannot be compared.  One must have a comparison, to be measured truly.  Just my two sense... BTW, I would pay an extra $10 to opt out / in for annual achievements...

  • After three years, Strava has become very boring. Not only the KOMs are contested only by pros or elite amateurs (unless you create a segment in your back yard) but also my personal bests are dominated by unrealistic times from chain gangs or massive tailwinds etc. Without some form of seasonal, rolling or generally contemporary scoreboards it is very hard to keep the interest.
