Feedback for Annual Achievement Awards

December 22nd, 2015:

As we go into the new year, where annual achievements would reset, we wanted to let you know that annual achievements have been deactivated.

We're grateful for all your feedback over the course of the year, positive and negative, and we will continue to explore and develop other ways to celebrate and incentivize Strava athletes. Thank you for understanding and have a great holiday season.

Starting in 2015, annual achievements recognize your accomplishments on running and cycling segments during the current year.

Full explanation found here: https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21299622-Achievement-Awards-Glossary

We'd love to hear your feedback on this new feature, so please leave your comments below!

January 30th, 2015 update:

To summarize what Strava has done so far to address the feedback we've received:
  • As of today, we've disabled annual PR achievements on your activities. Those activities uploaded in the past will see 2015 annual PRs removed in a few weeks once the caches have cleared.
  • A few weeks ago, trophies for 6th-10th place for the 2015 overall leaderboard were disabled.
  • We fixed how we prioritize significant achievements as highlighted in the Activity Feed, Top Results (Activity page), and Recent Achievements (Profile Page). What was happening initially after the release is that annual achievements were appearing among the 2-3 highlighted achievements in the Activity Feed and in the Top Results section of the Activity page when there were more significant overall results later on in the activity. This was simply due to faulty logic, and we changed the logic to surface the most "significant" achievements instead by prioritizing all-time achievements.

  • The Annual Achievements that remain are KOM/QOM/CR and trophies for 2nd-5th place.

We are not going to develop an opt-out feature for annual achievements. Despite the overwhelming support for such a setting, we have chosen to take other steps to address your feedback instead, allowing us to work to make this feature better. By turning off a significant number of the annual achievements we hope that the clutter will be improved, and that it will be easier to view the achievements that are most important. As you can read below, we still have a number of projects coming later this year that will also improve the situation regarding too many achievements and visibility into annual leaderboards. Please continue to share your feedback with us here.

  • I've said what most others have but for the record here's what I submitted to customer service.  Kudos to them for recognizing (and empathizing) with my comments below...

I have to tell you guys: the 2015 feature is completely lame and worthless. It dumbs down your brand for the masses under the "everyone gets a trophy" mantra. If you want to grow, what you should have done is made this an "option" or just create another brand using your technology but market it to recreational athletes (think of what Ralph Lauren does with all of his different labels). It is really frustrating (not to mention time consuming) to sift through all of the bogus 2015 awards to find real achievements and data. The 2015 stuff is just unnecessary noise. Please create a toggle switch or something where this becomes an option. It is ridiculous and I'm certain I'm not alone in my views. Thank you. Bill Cuttler - Premium Customer, Santa Barbara, CA.

  • Now I see that you can choose the time period you want to see your segment achievement in, but it is only available in each segment's view.  The feature is not available in the regular activities list or in the individual activity page display.  I guess that is progress but it needs to be global throughout all your activities and segments.  I don't want to look at todays ride, that wasn't very good, and see a PR for 50 segments I passed through.  It's just ridiculous.

  • Can you please turn this feature off. Or give the ability to turn it off. It's pants.

  • Ditto, what else can i say? If you feel that you need this "feature" then at least let us turn it off as it offers no benefit. I i want to look up my times this year or month i already could.

  • Another vote for being able to opt out of the yearly achievements.  I'm not interested in it although I can see why other people might be.  Please let us opt out if we want to.

  • Just the other day, I took a route for the first time.  I had to stop and adjust my derailleur for a few minutes.  To my surprise, I had a 2015 KOM on this!  WOW.  I looked and I was LAST on the leaderboard out of 150 riders.  HAHAHA.  BUT I did get the 2015 KOM - WOOHOO!

Joking aside, this is the thing - it's just not useful to me or any Strava user I know.  My unscientific deduction ~50 users all hate it in my feed and haven't met one that likes them.  Please don't just have a "switch" for it.  Turn it OFF completely.

    Thank you Strava.

  • Trying to be as objective as possible, I understand that some people may want the annual achievements.  I also think that it's pretty clear there are MANY of us who do not.  Please provide an option to make this feature optional, a toggle on/off button similar to any other user adjustable setting.

  • Couple weeks ago go I went out ride on my local trail to get my dog some exercise and to recon what trail condition is like. We have a lot of snow here in UT so it required quite a bit of walking but I still had 2015 KOM on every segments.  There were so many trophies and medals that my head was spinning trying to understand what Starva was trying to tell me. What a completely confusing and clutter Strava app has become...

  • The votes are extremely clear on this one, but Strava isn't a democracy. Vote with your feet. I was a premium member from early on, but I declined to renew last year, when it became obvious that (unless you live in SF and can take a noon run with the staff) user comments drop into a "we hear you, we're listening to our users" basket. I will renew premium membership when I can start my training calendars on any day I choose, upload photos without using a third-party app (especially Instagram), and ignore current-year achievements (unless I choose to filter that way), and generally when Strava recognizes that these sorts of features should be implemented as options.

  • Dudes, when the biscuit barrel is full - where's the fun in biscuit's ? All these 2015 KOM's and PR's etc diminish actual KOM's, PR's, 2nd & 3rd. I can understand a mentality that thinks everyone requires some kind of recognition for almost every effort but it's just ridiculous and somewhat confusing. I can hardly tell where my "real" achievements are amongst all those pointless "trophies".... I need to refer to a key to work it all out. Too much dudes... too much !

  • I'm with Richard.  Vote with your wallet, people.  My premium subscription ends in a week, and I have switch off the auto-renew.  I would gladly be a premium customer again, but this annual stuff has to be gone.

On a side note, I can't believe that Strava is not listening to its customers.  Yes there might be a few who requested, and like, this feature, but they need to listen to the majority here.  And that voice is loud and clear - "turn it off."

  • Perhaps this "problem" is the American outlook on life...... i.e. the insincere "have a nice day", "great work", "good job" mentality - the need to be recognized, rewarded etc etc. So perhaps we're being a bit unkind as their culture maybe lends itself to this kind of thing more than Europeans. I bet they've had a "hi five" brainstorming session and can't quite believe what's not to like about all these trophies we're getting on every ride :o)

  • Gotta be honest here, whoever thought of this implementation clearly doesn't use the app. It litters the screen with useless trophies and medals, especially at the beginning of the year. You should at least filter the visibility of these yearly awards, and don't show them until you've ridden a segment 3 or 5 times, or whatever. You used to be able to scan how 'good' of a ride you had by how many trophies you got; now it's just plain useless, and masks the quality of the ride. Please delete this feature, or at least don't show it until the information is RELEVANT.

  • Wow, this thread had become amazing. I'm struggling to find a single positive view among these comments. I've already commented myself both here and via Facebook, and share and agree with all the views expressed here. It's entertaining reading!

It's been a few weeks now and I think the annual achievements are actually having the reverse effect than what the intent has been - I really just don't care any more about segments and leaderboards. Up to last year I was working hard to earn podium places, there was friendly competition among friend and clubmates for local KOMs, I used VeloViewer to keep track of how many KOMs I had (because let's face it, nowhere in Strava can you find out how many KOMs or Podiums you have, but that's another thread I expect!).

On the plus side, I don't seem to be losing any KOMs either, I think because like me, everyone else just doesn't care any more. Because what's the point now? No one notices or bothers to notice if you have a good ride or not, proper achievements are drowning in meaningless crud.

I'm far away from Strava HQ, here in the south of old Blighty, and a member of a large cycling club (200+ members) and an even larger popular cycling culture.

STRAVA, please hear us when I say we are ALL in agreement. We can all appreciate the development time that's obviously been put in, but surely the feedback has to be enough to pull the plug on this?

STRAVA, we (cycling clubs and Strava users of the UK) are all in unanimous agreement, this is devaluing and diluting the once thriving competition for true Strava achievements and will ultimately ruin the one thing that made Strava better than the many other similar sites out there. There are so so many more useful features you could be adding to the Strava product.

For me, the competition and recognition for the true KOMs is what motivates me, not earning an achievement for a segment on which I had a puncture (yes that's happened).

I'm now thoroughly demotivated and unless I get motivated again, sadly my premium membership will also lapse.

Please revert this and lets pretend it never happened. What d'ya say?

  • Oh - and when you do a roll back, please roll back to the previous achievement graphics. The old KOM crown was far better :-)

  • The problem here, is pride. Someone on the board that likely doesn't cycle and absolutely doesn't use their product daydreamed this nightmare into being. The thought being that more people would use the product if there was more reward(Sort of the Planet Fitness model with pizza and doughnut days). Whoever thought this up knows 100% that there will be a small dip in membership as backlash, but is banking on new membership from people that desperately need positive feedback. It is a real shit way to do business, but Strava is a business and they want to maximize their profits. If they can ignore us for long enough, then new members will see this as a norm and everything will be fine and dandy. Sure, they will lose some premium members(me included) but with the thickening of America, they need to target a broader(literally) demographic. I can understand this thought process. Strava is just going to be a shit product catering to the lowest common denominator.

  • If Strava does not fix this soon by either removing Annual Achievements or totally separating and clearly distinguishing them from all-time achievements this will be the reason that Strava got Myspaced.  The only question is what product will replace it like Facebook killed Myspace?

  • Sadly, you have a Feature Suggestions forum with literally hundreds of suggestions, many of them with hundreds of thumbs up proving that people actually want them. Instead, you spend development cycles on something that nobody asked for (Search the Feature Suggestions forum...nowhere does anyone want "Annual KOM/PR tracking"). Seriously, the forums here appear to be just lip service. Ditch the annual achievements, and put some development cycles into something that USERS ACTUALLY WANT. Prove that you DO actually give a damn what customers want. Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.

  • Elle, first I must say that Strava has been one of the best most seamless apps I have used period. Until this year. Please remove 2015's blunder, and just keep it like it was prior to that update. We would all be happy. Oh, and keep the crown graphics traditional, for those of us rolling 8 pages deep. Keep up the good work Strava and don't let your users down.

  • Wow! Every single person on here has the same view that the new annual achievements really suck. I would love to go back a year to the clean leaderboards that actually meant something.

Come-on Strava let's pretend this little faux pas never happened.

  • We all know it's just not enough to allow users the ability to filter segment results by gender, their results this year, who their following, and their previous results on a segment -- all of which already exists. Shouldn't absolutely everyone feel special all the time? With the magic of the 2015 KOMs and Trophies every ride can be like one of those super awesome "freemium" games all the kids love these days! Imagine all the personal affirmation you'll get after you arrive home from a grueling 22 mile road ride! Just upload your data and blammo! Countless treasures will await you! Share your epic ride on Facebook and brag to all your friends about how many awesome 2015 trophies and KOMs you scored out there! It'll make you feel almost cool as that old aunt of yours who still plays FarmVille and posts every accomplishment!

And hey, just because a few Strava users train hard, eat well, and have the audacity to be younger, more athletic, uninjured, more committed, or more healthy, that is absolutely no reason to deprive others from feeling any less super.  But there's even more! Act now to upgrade to Premium and you'll also be able to filter your data by age groups and weight class! [Yes, that's really already available for Premium members.]

Because here at Strava, we believe that no one is faster than you, and we're gonna give you the awards to prove it!

Stay tuned for our next innovation -- e-bike segments!

  • Set it back or at least allow us to choose. This is really annoying. I can't tell what is a true PR and what is an APR (annual). I have in interest in the latter. I'm sure the majority wants to beat their best time, not reset every year.

  • I agree with everyone else on this thread. The yearly achievements does nothing but cheapen our efforts and clutter up the leaderboard. I know I'm spending far less time on Strava because of this. This went from one of the slickest and cleanest apps out there to a cluttered mess. If you must keep this feature at least group it with the other leaderboard filters. Also please go back to the old trophy graphics. They looked so much better.

Everyone doesn't need a prize after every ride to enjoy Strava.

  • I have come to the conclusion that Strava has weak software engineers. There are so many things they can do to make it a better product and yet they choose the most simple minded / "student project" to implement with their yearly PRs. Here are some things to make it a better product. : - correct GPS stray by guiding the user to decide which portion are off the route - collapse micro segments that clutter up PRs i.e. Let me choose to not show PR for segments less than 1 mile as an example - add ability to upload pics instead of stupid Instagram - let me only see all time PRs and not my 2nd and 3rd best I'm sure there are more great ideas but I don't think these guys are capable

  • Guys and gals, vote with your feet (directly to Strava's pocketbook). If you are a Premium member, cancel your subscription immediately. Your data will still be there for the future if they decide to make this right.

  • Wanted to add my name to the list of people that want this "feature" removed or disabled.  It has effectively ruined what was pretty much my reason for using strava in the first place... being able to track my progress... now every ride is just so cluttered with crap I rarely bother to look.  I feel it's also taking the social aspect out of strava cause I don't care to sift through the crap of my friends rides to see if they really threw down a killer ride and got some PR's or KOM's or if they just racked them up because they haven't ridden those segments yet this year.

Here's a great example... today i went for an easy recovery spin to move the legs... a mere 30 minutes... i threw down 2 big rides over the weekend and then got food poisoning on Monday so needless to say i was pretty weak and taking it VERY easy... a 2nd overall, 3rd overall, and a PR... here's the best part... the PR is actually 87th out of the 90 times i've ridden that section... do i really need recognition for that???
