Apple Watch app asks me to Log In

After the recent update, my app on my apple watch will not start or change back to the shoe to run. I get an error message that says Check Strava on iPhone for prompts and there is none and be sure Bluetooth is enabled in settings which it is. This is very frustrating I used to love this app till now.

  • @Phil Morris - How is it at the user end? Nothing has changed in my updates other than to accept recent updates to Watch, IoS and the App. Every time I try to start Strava on my Watch I am told to accept the terms. I did that first time and it worked. Then it happened next day and I thought, maybe there was a patch that came out pretty quickly so I did the same. After a week I'm thinking that there is some issue registering the acceptance on systems (either on the devices or at the server end) and that is pretty widespread given the combinations of phones and watches listed in this thread. Telling everyone you're using a beta and it works is not a helpful response.

I've been using my AW2 and Xr happily for months. I'm irritated that I need to have my phone nearby even for the kids commute to school. I don't see a useful response to this beyond the usual uninstall and reinstall which is pretty much a default response to any issue but even if you do do that people are reporting that the issue persists.

It looks to me as if the authentication is not persistent or that it times out before the app starts since so far the watch app seems to work for the remainder of the day and then when I start again the next day we're back to square one (or at least Strava is working until I stop using it or separate my phone from my watch for a prolonged period).

  • I think it might have to do with the pop up ads in the Strava app. Once I dismiss those, the Watch app works again. But obviously not ideal—means you need to have your phone with you and accessible, when obviously the point of the Watch app is that you can use it without needing to pull out (or even have with you) your phone. Was all working fine for me until beginning of this week. There was an iPhone update pushed over the weekend, but i think that is also when Stelrava started pushing out the pop up ads every time you open the Phone app, and I suspect they may be the culprit.

UPDATE—iOS 13.1 resolved this for me

  • Same issue here, iPhone XS, Apple Watch 3 - whenever I start a run on the watch I get the 'log in on phone' prompt -- but in my case, if I just open the Strava app on the phone, the watch app then proceeds normally without needing further interaction from me.

  • It appears that this issue was caused by the Strava updates rolled out this week to support IOS 13.  After updating my phone to 13 I went through the normal process, opened watch, it asked for me to log in on my phone, opened my phone app and this time within seconds the watch screen came up as normal.  Today I opened my watch app again and it worked as it should, so updating to IOS 13 appears to have solved my problem.

  • I'm also having this issue on Apple Watch Series 2. Are you still supporting it?

  • I've been having this problem all week,  It's solved temporarily by un installing Strava from my watch but I don't want to do this evening time I am going for a run :-(

  • My Strava Apple Watch app had been working flawlessly for a couple of years and then I started experiencing the same issue. I was able to resolve it by going into my iPhone Strava app > Profile > Settings > Applications, Services, and Devices. My Apple Watch wasn’t listed here so I selected Connect a new device to Strava. It started working after that.

  • Same issue here with my AW4 and iPhone X. Had been using this setup for 8 months or so and started getting the ‘sign in on iphone’ on the watch about 2weeks ago. Tried all the fixes here but none worked so I have to log out of app on my phone and then log back in to access the app on the watch. That’ll work for 2 days but then I get another login prompt. Don’t always have my phone on me though, so I’ve started using the Apple native exercise app and have come to enjoy it.

  • Same issue with my Apple Watch.  Strava was working fine until a couple weeks ago.  Everything up to date, have rebooted watch and phone.  It may work for a couple of times, then back to needing a login to my phone and. I am logged into my phone!!!  I use strava  for walking, running, cycling and will go with another app if it’s not fixed.  Really frustrating!!!  Any no response from strava!

  • I’m having the same problem, I have an Apple Watch Series 3 and an iPhone 8. For the last few weeks the watch keeps telling me to sign in on the phone, which I am. None of the fixes listed in this thread have worked. Strava on my watch just will not work at all. Time to start looking at other apps as I use this at least twice a day for my commute.

  • Obviously there is a problem with this new update. I also get the same message every couple of days. The solution the requires me to unpair and pair my watch with the phone is weird because I'll have to configure all applications.

  • This started happening very recently for me as well. AW2 + XS Max. Incredibly frustrated after dozens of attempts to uninstall, reinstall, logout, reboot in various sequences.

  • Can confirm that updating to iOS 13 (now 13.1) seems to have resolved this issue for me - watch app starts normally.

iPhone XS + Apple Watch 3.

I plan to update to watchOS 6 this evening, so pretty sure nothing will work tomorrow ;-)

  • I’ve had this exact same problem since I got my new iPhone XR.

On the watch, I just get the welcome screen and instructed to log into the app on the phone. Deleted and reinstalled on both phone and watch and it still periodically happens. Very annoyed.

  • IOS 13.1 on iPhone X and watch OS 6 on watch 4 and the problem keeps occurring .....

Guess it is time to look for a new fitness APP due to lack of response from strava

  • Still the same with iPhone and Watch updates, iPhone XR and series 5 watch. Strava say on their help page that a fix has been released so update app to 116.1.0

Fingers crossed as it is getting really frustrating.

  • I was up in the Sierra mountains with no cell or internet service and went to use my watch to track a run.  The dreaded "log in your Strava app on your phone" message came up and made my watch useless.  I had to run with my phone in hand because I had no cell service.  FRUSTRATING!

However, when I got home today, I uninstalled/reinstalled the app on both phone and watch and it seems to be working properly again.  Let's cross our fingers.  I will update my comment if things change.

  • 'The open your iPhone app'-message has been bugging me for a week now. iPhone 11Pro, AW4, updated to iOS 13.1.1. Uninstalled Strava, reinstalled it (v116.1.0 r18518) but still the same troubles.

    Any tips / progress?

  • Hey Strava, any updates on when a fix will be available? This has been happening frequently over the last few weeks and renders the watch app useless. Same symptoms for me this week and I couldn't get it to work at all today so was unable to track my workouts. AW3, 11 pro, iOS 13.1.2 watchos 6.0.1

  • Hi there.

There is a solution for this? If you go to Apple Forums they say "This is a 3rd party tool and we do not support, check it with the vendor".

It was working fine few weeks ago for me and now I need to stay all the time with the phone so I can log my activities in the watch so what the point using Strava?

Any tips / progress so far?

  • I was having this issue; Apple Watch Series 2, iPhone 8+. I upgraded to the latest version of Strava on my phone, uninstalled and reinstalled on my watch and everything is back to working as it should and I haven't had any issue with my previous 5 rides.

  • I'm just using a very ugly workaround. I'm just leaving the strava app open all the times in my Watch so it won't ask for login. It might consume more battery but at least I can log my activities without the hassle message. I really appreciate if they can fix this issue. For now this is the only workaround that I found to keep log my activities without asking to log  in my phone.
