Add support for barometric data from Garmin eTrex devices

My gps unit, the Gamin eTrex 35 touch, has a barometric altimeter. In Garmin Connect this data is correctly used to show the elevation gain on a ride.

However in Strava the data is ignored, and the normal gps-elevation data is used. The device is not in the list of 'trusted elevation data'-devices.

Now I can manually force this by adding "with barometer" to the gpx file, or use something like fitfiletools to change the device in the .fit file to an Edge device, and then it will use the barometric elevation data correctly. It's quite annoying having to do this every ride, and not being able to use the auto-sync of Garmin-Connect and Strava.

Adding the eTrex family of Garmin devices to the list of barometer devices in Strava seems like something that should be easy to realise? Could this please be done to make the life of eTrex Strava users easier? Thanks

Elevation from the Garmin eTrex is now accepted by Strava.

  • Having the same problem as above when syncing my Garmin eTrex35  touch with strava my elevation is way off. Have Strava any plans to try and solve this problem?

  • I'm currently experiencing the same issues as noted above from Ruud.  Why hasn't Strava Support addressed this issue?

  • Same with the Garmin GPSmap 62stc.

The terrain height is also determined with barometer. But this is not accepted, which makes taking part in challenges useless. The "With Barometer" is only annoying and time-consuming for every activity.

  • Hi Elle - Has support for eTrex 30 (not eTrex 30x) been added please?

My friend has just uploaded a ride from his eTrex 30 and Strava doesn't seem to be using the barometric data. Which is kind of important as he just rode 9000 Meters elevation according to the Garmin for an Everesting challenge - but Strava has it at 28,540ft not the expected 30,000+

Looking at the segments on the ride https://www.strava.com/activities/1131095154 , there are some like Tumble, Keepers, Blorenge Climb (https://www.strava.com/segments/11909575) which is 1306ft which my friend did 23 times. this would be 30,038 feet at least for the whole ride - but Strava looks like it is using basemap elevation with much lower elevation...

Do you have a way of looking at a segment and working out whether it has historical map based / geo services data for it - or whether it has been upgraded to a the newer Strava community based data? I think this one may have old data as the ridden data by everyone seems more realistic...

    Thanks

    Bill

  • I am using an eTrex Touch 35 with barometric altimeter.
I record my tracks with GPX and FIT files and synchronize with Garmin Connect.
Strava also synchronizes with Garmin Connect.
In Strava, for activities recorded with eTrex Touch 35, the elevation chart remains blank.
