Galaxy Watch app synchronization

I tried using the Strava app for Galaxy Watch (Tizen) a couple of times now. Twice with a bicycle ride, once with a run.

The first ride was about 12 km and tracked just fine. It synched with my Strava profile perfectly. The second ride that I tracked did not sync. And today I did a 8 km run and that too did not sync. So the three activities all show in the history page of the app, I can manually try to sync them and it says it was succesful, but still they do not show up in my Strava profile.

During the run I noticed I did get 1 km updates of the stats but the pace was only right the first km, the other updates showed rubbish numbers for pace (slower and slower while I was actually accelerating)

So currently I am disappointed, dumping the app and reverting to Samsung Health.

  • I have been having this problem recently and seemed to find the cause but not the reason why...
When it fails to sync, when I go in the wearable app the watch is disconnected from my phone, I hadn't clocked thus because blue tooth says the watch is connect so maybe its not a strava fault but a Samsung issue that wearable randomly disconnects so the interface between watch and phone is broken dispite Bluetooth connection.
Just a thought its worth checking that wearable is connected if having sync issues

  • @Douglas, earlier this year I had all of the issues you mentioned, and as such had rated the Strava Galaxy watch app 1 or 2 stars.

    But since then they:

    • Implemented auto-pause (it works well at least for riding, not used Strava for any other activity type)
    • Fixed the sync issues (though a few others on this thread seem to still have some issues - I have not for months), and
    • Fixed the battery killing/warning message

So I now give it a solid 4.

I was quite annoyed when I bought my Galaxy Watch on pre-sale last year, expecting native Strava app (due to misleading marketing) only to find it didn't exist. And when the app finally came out it was terrible to start with, but they've iterated quickly and I find it very good now.

  • offf, I just lost my possibly best racing bike session today. Watch did not sync (since yesterday) and I had to re-authorize it as per instructions when the problem occurs, and all data was gone.

  • Just thought I'd share my experience in case it helps people getting their galaxy watch and strava working.

I set up strava on my watch a few months ago and it worked once just fine and then every time I went for a bike ride after that it would start recording ok but when I'd finish I'd find out that very little of the ride was recorded and what was recorded made no sense - with GPS coordinates showing me covering 10km or more in a few minutes and in a straight line. This happened with every ride (other than the first one) and made using the app pointless - not that I'd used strava much before but when I did (and it worked) it made me keen to have it work on every ride. ..probably something quite familiar to regular strava users!

So after a few months of trying to get it work I came close to just using something else (eg another watch, bike computer, other app etc) but I thought I'd try the following and give it another go. Basically, I removed the app from my watch, uninstalled the strava app on my phone and just re installed the app on the watch (not the phone). Then went for a ride - but before I started the ride I turned the bluetooth on the watch off - so any gps signal recorded was only being done by the watch.

The ride recorded fine, same with the second one - so potentially still early days but hopefully is working now. I have a feeling that the only thing making it not work in the first place was having my watch bluetooth on (ie I have my phone with me and maybe the gps signal from the phone was causing an issue for the watch).

Not certain the problem is fixed for good but great to have some rides now recorded!

  • Hi.
I just bought the Samsung Galaxy Watch active because there is a Strava Application (all of my sports friends are only on Strava). I tried 2 trainings and it doesn't sync with my Strava profile. Last training I used Samsung Health ant the sync works directly... I've the 1.1.2 Strava version installed. When I click on ''sync'' on the watch, nothing happens et Strava application closed. You all have the same issue and I would like to know if Strava and Samsung developers are working on this issue.
    Thanks.

  • Hey, I installed the Stava App on my Samsung Galaxy Watch because Samsung Health does not provide overall statistics (like the amount of km in a year etc). I have finished a ride, it recorded correctly on the app but it does not sync to my profile. Even if I go to history and tap to sync, it says that sync is complete, but it still does not apear on the profile. I have version 1.1.2 installed. I've read that this issue was solved in previous version. Can someone fix it, please?

    Thanks

  • I have exactly the same issue as you Sebastien. This was working fine. Now when I click sync it tries for 5 seconds then crashes everytime. It was worked fine for 6 months until this week. What's the issue Strava?

I have 8 activities now on my watch I can't sync.

  • I posted earlier in this thread that I was having all of the same issues.

I ended up finding an alternative app called Gear Tracker which automatically syncs to Strava. You have to pay a small fee for Gear Tracker but it is brilliant. I was about to send my Samsung Watch back because of how useless its run recordings (including the Strava app) were.

Gear Tracker allows you to create all kinds of custom sessions and always records accurately and updates to Strava with no problems. The amount of customisation of which measures you want to see what type of run is excellent too, so for intervals I can see my average pace during each interval but if I'm just going for a long run I can switch between each km average or an overall average.

Gear Tracker is the app that Samsung should have built, or failing that which Strava should have built!!!

    Get it.

  • Hi Mark, hi all !
Mark, thanks a lot for your post. I just tried your app and It seems it works ! I bought the app for 5€ and the sync on Strava is working fine.
So, now, I just have to launch a new Samsung Health program and run with GearTracker (for Strava) AND Samsung Health (for the program's results).

  • I've been testing the water with Strava on Frontier S3 and a Samsung S7 trying to gain some faith in the data. I'm Mtb'ing with Strava recording on both with watch untethered.  I've dual recorded 3-4 times at this point.  On most recent trip, the phone recorded 17.81 miles, the watch got 16.03.  That's a concerning difference!  For reference, there has been a moderate delta between the devices each time.

When I tethered the watch, it uploaded the activity to Strava and the app shows 2 events, which is sort of reasonable given the huge discrepancy in data.  I've exported the GPX files and looked a little...  The phone is recording almost 30% more points than the watch (5848 vs. 4604 in this ride).  Looking at the tracks, the watch seems to be less accurate than the phone as areas that I went over twice line up pretty well with the 2 phone tracks and one of the watch tracks.  The 2nd watch track can be off a little bit.  I'm figuring this variance is what's driving the difference.

On one ~2.5 mile loop, the watch recorded 2.616 miles, while the phone recorded 2.78 miles.  If that delta were consistent, I'd be relatively happy.  Haven't spent the time to figure out where the other ~1.5 miles went.

This seems like relevant info for those wanting to use their watch as a sole data source.  It also appears to be a Samsung issue more than Strava, but the 2 are obviously pretty interrelated here.  And in my search for answers, I found you guys first!  So special!!

With that said, I will commend Strava for good synchronization otherwise.  Heart rate is there and it happens automatically within a minute or 2 once tethered.

  • Hi.

Strava version 1.1.2 on Galaxy Smartwatch is very unstable. It closes without a reason, a problem with the start and, what is worse, there is no certainty that the training after the end is saved or we will go to the option of its completion. These vulnerabilities exclude the application from use. Strava do you test applications? I will ask otherwise in which directory temporary training files are stored temporarily. I lost too much of them. Or maybe the Galaxy Watch problem and the new update?

  • Seems that after such a long time of people complaining all over the internet about this issue Samsung does nothing to address it.
I have runs from 3.5 days ago which are still not synchronized with Strava. Sometimes it takes 1 or 2 days, but this is a new record. It's my first and last Samsung gear device and phone.

  • Don't use the Strava app. Purchase the GEAR TRACKER app for the Galaxy Watch. It is great for training sessions and automatically syncs with Strava. I was about to give the watch back until I came across this app. It's not very expensive and puts Samsung health and the Strava app on the watch to shame with its accuracy and features.

  • @Michal Rupik- I've had a different experience- Strava 1.1.2 has been very stable on my Frontier S3.

@Francisco C- since I'm using untethered, I (and you) can go into Strava on the watch, click the counterclockwise arrow, find your activity, then click the very small red "Tap to Sync" text.  Mine has always immediately synced with Strava after that.

  • @Mark Magill- Thanks, going to give it a try!  For reference for others, this is found in the Galaxy Store, not Google PlayStore.

  • I bought the Galaxy Watch, like others, specifically so I didn't have to take a phone on my run. About ten successful syncs all good. Then last nights run, no sync. Run was long for me but I've synced longer. Manually trying to sync, I get sync failed. I tried a small walk, same thing. So now I'm guessing it'll never sync again. I'm on the latest Strava app - both on phone and watch. Tried all sorts of combos of Bluetooth and WiFi on/off. Nothing... Hopeless... Hugely disappointed...

  • Using v1.2.3, app does not sync. Manual sync shows sync success, but not synced. This thread goes back more than 1 year - is any one from Strava monitoring this thread, and actually fixing the problem?

  • I reported this on a ticket earlier today and they seem to have fixed it.  Managed to manually synch an activity from the 'history' screen in my Samsung Watch that was failing earlier.  Support said "we've resolved the issue".

  • I have the same issues.   I've been using Strava on Samsung Galaxy watch for about 12 months.  Updated not too long ago (I think v1.0.2) and sync has stopped working.  Removed and reinstalled Strava on the watch, not v1.2.3 and still can't sync either automatically or manually for about 5 days. Before that it had been working perfectly.

  • Well. I have just been able to one-by-one sync my last four runs using 'tap to sync'.

I think it may have had to do with the date-time on the watch. I had changed it in setting to 'synced with phone'.

Also changed date-time on the phone to 'synced with network'. This morning I changed the phone settings back to NOT'sync with network', and then 'sync with network' again and reboot, and now I can sync Strava again.

I had also tried installing Endomondo yesterday, but it kept saying that it couldn't connect to Bluetooth. Now that works OK.

It seems that having a time difference between your device and the cloud or phone stuffs up the network connections. I think I have seen this before.

Also, on the Watch Active, I can't change the time and date 'synced with phone' back to NOT 'synced with phone' because the setting is greyed out.

I don't know if messing with the time caused the problem, or Strava did something, but it is fixed for me.

  • 5 months on since my previous post. Sync issues have been extremely rare to non-existent for me (and manual sync has worked eventually on the rare occasion it did happen)

The latest issue (which is actually far more annoying) is that the app just crashes/disappears mid-workout, all recording completely lost. Thankfully I've usually been riding with others and have been able to tag myself in the rides, but still annoying to not have my own stats!

Back to 3 stars for now...
