Strava stops recording (iPhone 8; iOS v12.1.2)

5 out of 11 rides since 13 december 2018 have an incomplete log because Strava stopped recording on my iPhone 8 running iOS v12.1.2

During the ride I listen to music locally stored on the iPhone using the Music app.
I sometimes make or answer a phonecall.
I sometimes ask Siri for the time or to read me a Whatsapp message.

However I cannot relate the stopped recordings to any of these actions.

My superstition is that it might have something to do with the outside temperature, it is still above freezing though.
I'm have my iPhone mounted on my handlebars since 10-10-2018 and it has cooled down since then.
I checked that the power saving mode is set to Off.

If you have any suggestions that might help solving this issue please let me know.

  • I might have a similar problem since updating to the latest iOS version and Strava version - I'm now getting on every ride at random times a straight line, Strava just closed down - this is the first time in 4 years this is happening, and it's my same device still. No settings have been changed.
    Background app refresh is on.
Wifi and Mobile data is turned off.
Location sharing is on for Strava.

  • I am having the same issue for the last two weeks!  Bad update???  Just as Reghardt mentioned, I get a straight line.  App has been trouble-free up until two weeks ago.  Now it is happening on a regular basis.  SERIOUSLY annoying!

There was a thread about this very issue started by Strava tech support in Jan 2018.  Lots of people replied but the thread closed after a couple of months with no apparent resolution or communication from Strava tech support.  What gives?  Does Strava ever follow up with these issue?  I saw dozens of user posts on this and not one single follow up from Strava.

  • ...Just to add:  Here is the link to the post I mentioned

Here are Strava's suggestions to fix the problem (tried them all, and still have the issue):

We've seen a recent increase in the number of iOS users reporting GPS issues when recording but we aren't quite sure of the cause. This means the app freezes or stops mid-recording which results in incomplete data and missing portions of your activity. To help us investigate the issue, please try the troubleshooting steps below and let us know if it improves your future recordings:

    • Try turning your phone completely off then on.
    • Try turning location services off then on. Location services are located in settings > privacy > location services (turn off/on).
    • Try turning off wifi before and during recording.
    • Close all other open applications before recording and if you open another app during your activity, navigate back to Strava afterward.
    • Lastly, sometimes recording data quality can be improved by giving your phone more time to acquire satellites prior to starting your activity. Try opening Strava when you have a clear and unobstructed view of the sky and wait a few more minutes than normal before starting your activity.

Update: We've received reports that updating to iOS 11.3 has helped to improve GPS recordings on Strava.

I am on the latest upgrade as of Feb 1st BTW.

  • One more note...I thought I had the latest upgrade but apparently not.  I just updated iOS to 12.1.3.    Hoping this iOS upgrade might resolve issue (fingers crossed).

  • Mine seems to be better now since I've uninstalled Strava/Updated to iOS 12.1.3 and then reinstalled Strava. I've had about 3 rides now where it has not yet crashed.

Will update if I come across a problem again.

  • Rode yesterday (iOS 12.1.3; Strava v83.0.0 (15312)) and got a flat.

I used my remote on the wired Apple Earbuds to activate Siri. At first Siri switched on and off immediatly. Second time it worked normally and I made a phone call. (Oh yeah, I used Whatsapp to send a photo also)

At home I realized that Strava had stopped recording at the spot I got the flat.

I think it has something to do with activating Siri.

Hope some day Strava gives a reaction, but I don't hold my breath.
