Record heart rate for indoor workout - can't get it to work

I would like to use Strava to record my heart rate during indoor workouts (spinning and crossfit) using the iPhone app.

I would like would like to put the phone down in a corner of the gym or on my exercise bike and leave it alone during the work out.  When I have tried this, the resulting workout show no recorded data and it tells me that the workout was 0m 0s in duration.

I've turned off auto-pause for both cycling and running.  I'm not looking for the phone to record moving time or power data from the bike, etc.  Just heart rate during the entire period from the time that I start the recording to the time that I stop it.

Is this not possible?

  • It's possible, but not with the Strava app. You could use free apps like Wahoo Fitness for that, they even upload to Strava afterwards.

  • Thanks. That’s surprising. Seems like a very minor change to enable the app to record heart rate even when the phone’s accelerometer and GPS do not detect motion.

  • Yeah, really annoying that Strava won't do this with the app. I do it with cyclemeter/runmeter which will upload to Strava if you pay $10 for the premium service.

  • Unbelievably even for outdoor activities the iOS app won’t record HR data soon .. https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/360032979131-Removing-Direct-Sensor-Pairing-from-the-Strava-Mobile-App?mobile_site=false

    Hate this

  • Mike,

Thanks for posting.  Wow, that's lame...hard to believe.  So if I understand that other article correctly, and Strava doe snot change course, I will need to buy a new device (i.e. watch or cycling computer).  I currently use Strava exclusively with my phone (and web site).

  • Right or as per strava recommendation (!!!!!) use another app like wahoo that will record your HR data and then you can optionally push that data to Strava.

  • Mike, and will the pushed/uploaded HR data (e.g. from Wahoo) for a workout get correlated with the geographic data collected by the Strava app for the same workout?   For my casual use, that's probably more work than it's worth.  Definitely reduces the value of the paid version of the service.

  • You record the gps data and HR data in wahoo and then push the whole workout dataset to strava. I expected this to be automatic when you finished the activity in wahoo but so far the few activities I've done this way have needed a manual upload to strava "click".
