Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • It should be clear now, that he community does not like the new Strava feed. So please make it optional and give us back the option to see the feed in a chronological order.

  • Yes, I agree with just about everyone else here, to please keep Chronological Order, if nothing else, at least an option.  I follow a few pros, but really do not want their 2K kudos showing up at the top of my feed every time I open Strava.  I think it is more important that my friends who are new to Strava get 1 Kudo instead of overlooked.  I don't want to have to dig for days to find my friends.  The way you're spelling this out, I would essentially have to stop following pros in order to see my friends show up in my feed.  Not interested.  Strava is successful because it works.  Don't make it like FaceBook where my friends posts get buried by all the commercial crap.  What's next, people paying to promote their rides?

  • It's unfortunate Strava you feel like you must show us what you feel is important to us.  I want to give friends Kudos if they're riding whether they have a big or small day...epic or not.  Not everyone has the opportunity to ride big days everyday and what about the new riders who are just getting out for the first few times?  Isn't it only fair we get to see their rides and encourage them by giving them Kudos?  I understand you have new algorithms you want to play with but please give us the option to sort by newest.

    Thanks

    Chris

  • This is literally the decision that made Facebook an irrelevant swamp.

The mistake lies in an assumption that people are simply too dumb to scroll down to what they want to see. It's actually what makes using a site interesting... scrolling and deciding. It's interaction and it's choice. Just let us scroll, we don't want algorithms telling us what is interesting, next up they'll be serving fake news, heavily liked shitty memes, and crappy advertising.

As others have suggested, give people the option. If you think you've got algorithms that will make the feed better fine make that an option.

    examples:

Sort By: "Interesting", "Chronological", "Nearest To Me"

    (Filter)OnlyShow: "New PRs", "Events 10km+ / 50km+ / 100km+", "Last 24hours", "Last 7 days", "My Club Events" etc...

Fixing the issue of social butterflies losing track of 100's of follow updates can be fixed by giving the user the power to find them. Not by deciding what they see for them.

  • Unfortunately, and stupidly I paid for a 12 month subscription to premium last year. My annual membership expires on July 14, 2017. I now have to endure the next 82 days before I can stop paying the wages for whoever came up with this rubbish!

I will 'NOT' be renewing it! I will not financially contribute to developments like this!

  • Every time I go on Strava I see the same few most "kudosed" rides stuck at the top of my feed. Rides at this point that are days old. Please go back (or provide and option) for chronological order. This is terrible!!!

  • So did anybody actually ask for this?  Irrespective don't force ti on use, please make it an option.  just like this comment section for which there is a pull down to determine the sort.  It seems that everything you do lately has been something I do not want, starting with the crappier maps.  Are you trying to antagonize your premium members?

  • I've literally stopped reading this stupid feed. All I use it for now is to track my rides. It just makes no fu&#%^ sense. I can't follow it. Someone should be FIRED over this mess.

  • Hi Elle

I've already made a comment on this thread but I see that still nothing's been done with regards to the new feed since then and I'm still frustrated by a lack of even an option to list my friends' rides in a chronological order. Are you even listening to your customers and users? Judging by your reply on the 13th April, it seems not.

Could I ask how you might like it if your email provider decided to start ordering your emails by 'what emails they thought you might like to see' rather than in a date order? I think you'd be a bit miffed!

Please start listening to the users who you've decided to thrust this new feed upon.

    Thanks.

  • Please hit the undo button and at least put it back to where it was.  If you want to actually listen to your users, add in all the other filters that everyone wants.  If you keep this up, it wont be long before you have competitors offering a much better service and your ground breaking product will be just a memory.

I'd even go so far as to say - add filters for an optional $1 per month - multiple that by your user base and $$ for something that would be very easy to implement.

  • We all hated it when Facebook did this, but at least you have the option of switching to chronological. I don't want to spend time experiencing this crap, give me back my old feed.

  • It seems Strava doesn't listen to us...
Still the feed is a big mess. In the past Strava also didn't listen to the community too.
I think it's time so search for an app which can replace Strava.
    Has anyone a suggestion?

  • I don't like the 'algorithmic' feed on other platforms and I really hate it here. Chronological order is less confusing and allows me plenty of freedom to check people's rides in real time. Thank you for concluding this test as soon as possible - hopefully today.

    Turn it off please

  • As so many here above me, I feel disappointed with your new feed, I don't like how you follow Facebook and Instagram feeds as I don't like them at all, I want my feed to be in chronological order.

Couldn't you at least ad an option for it and all of us who sure don't like this change in the way the feed is displayed ?

Is Strava doing a "regroup" on this "feature" or will Strava just "proceed"?

Or best yet is proceed back to chronological order!

  • Based on the comments I'm seeing and on the votes they're getting, I think it's absolutely crystal clear that this is not really wanted.  Those that will even tolerate this change are begging for the option to be able to turn it off, and to go back to a chronological feed. The comments seem, in many cases, to be based on real world experience of other social networks that have inflicted this innovation on their user base - apparently for no discernable reason.

I'm sure there are many, many users who have not expressed a preference, but I think it's fair that you should take the comments here to be a representative poll.  Please note, especially, the number of premium users who are suggesting they may cancel their subscriptions if you enforce this change with no option to turn it off.  It isn't safe for you to assume that, just because thousands of premium users haven't actually said the same thing, that they will not vote with their feet if your content becomes less valuable.

I appreciate that you've been "working on this for a year" and you have a lot of investment tied up here. No problem with that - a minority may like it. But PLEASE, for the representative (larege) majority voting here - at least give us the option to select our own preference.

Sincere thanks - and while we're on the subject, thank you so much for a fantastic site that I personally recommend to all my friends.

  • WTF is going on with this company. Are they having a collective breakdown?

I cancelled my premium and deleted my card details. If you fix this mess Strava, then I will renew again before next cash collection day. If you leave it like this I will jump ship as soon as someone comes along and starts a site that directly competes with you, and if you carry on like this someone is going to see that a gap in the market has appeared. Your position has been unassailable for a long time now. Nobody else had a chance in this market. Why are you shooting yourself in the foot and creating an opening for a competitor?

  • I've already commented, too, but I really can't believe there has only been one response/update here, and I'm pretty saddened that it was a defensive response at that. I've bought two Strava t-shirts, started a Strava club at my company, and pushed Strava on all the athletes I know. But I don't use Facebook and don't want my (former) favorite app to be like Facebook.

I'm sure I'll still use Strava because there are lots of local folks on it – but I've already cancelled my Premium. Perhaps I'll use that money to give Smashrun another try.

  • Please give the option to view chronologically. This is so confusing to look at and to follow my friends. I don't give a crap about the "kudos window". I don't run with an app because I want kudos, I just want to track what I am my comrades are doing over time.

  • Elle,

You state that you are going to listen to feedback but you seem to be ignoring the overwhelmingly negative feedback here.

So I suspect that I will follow the way of so many others; cancel my premium membership, unfollow all of your promoted riders who gain prominence and follow the herd to one of these appfelstrudel.com/a/426826309/alternative-to-strava-run-and-cycling-gps.html

  • Please, give us an option for Chronological order.

Copied my comment for the issue from my support ticket.

    Regarding Feed algorithm,

Strava was my favorite app but i can not use Feed anymore..I think you are experimenting changing chronological order but simply it is not working for me. Change is inevitable but at least give us an option on settings. Most of my friends are living on another time zone, my timeline is messed up right now, it is impossible track recent activities.

I think Strava is different than Facebook or Instagram, activity time is also important to follow fellow athletes with similar training programs.

  • Please, please remove me from this trial. I hate it. Things were fine as they were. Why do so many websites insist on thinking that change is always a positive thing. If you insist on implementing it, then at least give people the option of opting out. Surely not too much to ask.......

  • Dear Strava. This now takes this situation to a whole new level! Your brilliant non chronological algorithm feels the need to show my parkrun that I completed this morning not once but twice! It first appears near the top of my feed and when I scroll down, there it is again, albeit slightly rearranged!  Your ingenious algorithm is now clogging up my very own feed....with me!

Just how do you explain this?

  • I now understand why I'm getting less kudos than ever.  Terrible idea, and for me a Suunto user, I'll just use Movescount to view my own activity.  Will also likely cancel premium if this isn't made optional soon.
