Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • Crono order or nothing else for me!
There's no way I'm paying my subscription fees to see what you 'think' i should see!
If this change is forced on us I'll be cancelling my subscription as I don't want to trawl around the app like Facebook, etc. There's absolutely no benefit for the end user, Strava are trying to keep you in the app longer, their next step after this will be ads in your feed!

Edit: I've now cancelled my subscription and wont renew until the feed has a chronological order option.

  • I've tried it and I really don't like it.   Chronological order is far better than the new "facebook" style.  If you have to persist with "facebook" style then give paying customers the option to view how they want.

Strava is really brilliant and I love you guys for what you've done but this has really spoiled my user experience...  Please don't make us look to other apps

  • Hey, guess what? Yup, I want my activity feed back in good old chronological order too. Really not a fan of the new feed.

  • Just adding another voice to the general complaints about the new Activity Feed order - it's pretty evident that if we can't have a choice of how to order it, the clear majority want it in chronological order. As an example, if I've been doing a time trial, I want to see how those riding in the same event have done and that used to be easy but now it's all over the place depending on when they get home and download. Please take it back to the way it was or give us a choice.

  • Too much garbage on my feed. Challenges, Zwift, more challenges, monthly elevation challenges, Zwift, Monthly distance challenges. I can no longer see simply rides in a chronological order. Premium membership CANCELLED.

  • No, no, no, no, no!

Unlike Facebook et. al. posts, activities in Strava are not a popularity contest, or news items that might generate lots of lively discussion, or timeless thoughts that deserve to be highlighted. Strava activities are discreet events that occur one after the other.

    Chronological is great because:

-- I LIKE seeing who was out at 5am this morning, and who wasn't (and I'm happy to dig for it)
-- I LIKE seeing my buddy's 6 day bike-pack trip IN ORDER as it is happening.
-- I LIKE knowing a comment on a ride at the top of the feed that says "Trail is dry" is current, and not a reference to a ride last week.
-- I LIKE scrolling through the past few weeks seeing who did what on what day, because when Friend X rides on Thursday, that's a BIG DEAL because he's supposed to be at work.
-- Workouts are progressions, not random events. It's helpful to see the buildup / rest days / progression of my friend's workouts as she trains for a marathon.

Why the random* algorithm is useless:

-- No way to get a sense of how active person X really is because they're all randomly lumped
-- I get excited when I see person X was on the same trail I just was, only to realize they were actually there last week
-- Impossible to sort out WHEN an activity actually happened
-- It seems an acquaintance who gets lots of kudos gets preferential treatment -- so my only option is to unfollow him to keep him from always commanding the top of my feed
-- Just because I follow "Mr. KOM-a-day" doesn't mean I always want to see him front and center on my feed.
-- More to the point of the above, you have no way of knowing who or what is important to me, so quit trying to guess.

Can you please direct us to the thread of loyal Strava members begging for their feed to be randomly and illogically sorted? Because all I can find are the many requests like this one (from 2012, 318 "likes"), this one, this one, this one, this one, and many more asking for the ability to sort / filter the feed in USEFUL ways (hide commutes, see group rides, filter based on mileage, etc). These are all things that would help us get MORE out of Strava. Instead, now my feed is a confusing mess.

Obviously, if it took a year of work to create this new "feature" Strava must be pretty proud of it, and likely won't reverse the change -- but how about we compromise?

    Possible solutions:

-- A switch that allows us to toggle between chronological and random* (Even Facebook begrudgingly allows this)
-- Put the three most "algorithmically interesting" rides up top, clearly boxed off as such, then show the regular chronological feed from there.

Please listen to your customer base! We are taking time out of our day to write here because we do care, and feel quite strongly about this. Think about the number of users who are just frustrated silently.

    * You may say "it's not random" all you want, but it might as well be. It seriously makes me nauseous to look at as I try to sort the feed in my brain. Seeing a "today" ride several pages deep is just silly.

  • Congrats Strava! This post has achieved:

👑 KOM for number of down-votes!

    🏆 Top 10 for # of comments!

(I know this easily because I can sort the "Feature Discussion" feed in several different convenient ways.)

  • Please don't ruin Strava with a "top stories" feed. Please give the option of viewing "most recent" first. This is absolutely terrible so far and I'll likely stop using it soon if I can't view the most recent activities first. The social aspect of strava is dead if you don't give people a choice on how they can view their feed.

  • Strava - you've lost touch. Athletes by their very nature are anal rententive - of course we want oi feed chronologically!

We aren't the type to say "oh look, a kitty" and be distracted be some shiny post that you think is interesting. All it does, is piss us off because it is less efficient for us to find what we want (athletes remember).

  • There's no doubt Strava is only doing this because it makes them more money. Does anyone know how? Are there sponsored posts? Maybe the pros' sponsors pay to have their athletes highlighted?

Companies don't do things the majority of their customers don't like...unless there's more money to be had!!

  • Please give me my chronological feed back! I don't want this "optimized" activity feed! Please add at least a setting so that everyone can choose the desired feed order!

  • Think this is a bad move; I'm already missing content because I cant be bothered to scroll through the unordered stuff!

Definitly needs the option to go back to cronological

  • After some consideration about what I'd really want from my feed:

    • Let me filter out swimmings and runnings from the feed. Unless my friends are swimming or running on their bikes, I'm not that interested.
    • Give me an option to collapse people's commutes into a single entry / day. No need to show the maps or anything. Just the daily total. My friends and I do two commutes per day, sometimes more if they go out to lunch or quaxing for beer. The total is just fine for those activities.

  • I will also pile on here. I do not want to be told what I like or what is best. Chronological order should be an option.

  • I'm definitely not a fan of this. It only creates confusion. At least add an option to toggle back to chronological order?

  • I have actually started unfollowing people who I'm not actually friends with but enjoyed seeing their rides because now all I see is their rides. So I stopped following pros and people doing big challenges (like annual mileage, etc) because my feed gets spammed with all of their stuff instead of my friends rides and runs.

  • Terrible change. Please give us the option to choose which we would prefer.

If you are interested in de-cluttering the feed, start by removing all of the obnoxious challenge spam every month.

  • Dropped my premium membership this morning because of this and switched back to basic. I will probably upgrade if they go back to chronological order. In the meantime I'll learn all about Garmin Connect. It looks like it will give me everything I need. I might end up liking it more in which case I won't upgrade again.

  • Why is there no reaction from someone from Strava? Even a hint that this thread is being monitored would be nice! The engineers who wrote the code probably think that the new feed style is cool, and management might have a dastardly plan, but users want the option to choose!

I've been a premium member for four years, primarily to encourage what was basically a startup at the time, and also because I really like the "strive" concept and your software. However, if you're going to start randomly sorting my feed against my wishes, I fail to see why I shouldn't join the growing list of those CANCELLING their Premium membership.

Looking forward to Strava listening to all the feedback and doing the sensible thing!

  • Garbage at least give us an option. There are alternative apps for data and analyisis, there is little point in strava if i can't easily see what friends are upto.

A realistic option/improvement is to allow us to hide trainer and zwift rides.

  • Hey all, thanks for sharing your feedback so far. This new feed is only turned on for a small part our membership, so if you are in that select group at the moment I hope you've spent some time getting to know how the new feed works.

For example, if you are someone who likes to check their Strava feed multiple times a day, your feed will be closer to chronological as we only reorder the items that are new since the last time you viewed your feed. If you are someone that only checks the feed once every few days, we hope to quickly catch you up on the most interesting activities first. The algorithm will learn about what you find most interesting as you interact with the feed.

This concept of an algorithmic feed is not unique to Strava as many of you have experienced something similar on another program. But, we've done our best to design the feed to honor Strava's unique qualities. The concept may sound familiar, but our implementation aims to hold true to our community, and improve the Strava experience for you.

We are monitoring your comments and will regroup to see how this feature is doing before we proceed.

  • The solution is simple here. While you think this new feed is smart nobody seems to have asked for it and nobody wants it. Just go back to a regular chronological feed. Better to just admit your error now, cut your losses, and make your users happy again. Same thing with me as other people here, I don't see why I should continue paying for a service that clearly does NOT listen to its customers.

  • It sounded a lot like spin (and now appears gone??) the ponytails in the marketing department are defending their great idea.

Funny, if you go back and read the founders story it's because they wanted to keep abreast of what each other were doing. That's all we are asking too.

I do not want an algorithm that will 'learn' what I want to see - I already know! Chronological feed.
