Feedback for the updated Strava feed

We are excited to share with you a project that we've been working on for the past year - a new way to experience the Strava feed.

The feedback you've been sharing with us about better ways to sort and filter the feed has not gone unnoticed. The feed fuels the power of our community and is where athletes inspire and interact with each other. We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you.

Here's how it works:

When you refresh your feed, any content you haven't seen before will be at the top of the feed, above activities you've already seen. The order in which these new items appear is based on a learning algorithm that uses your past behavior to gauge whether you'll find content interesting. Comment a lot on your sister's activities? Her items will be ranked highly for you. Your friend just ran their best time for a 10K? That will get promoted as well. The algorithm will continue to evolve over time, learning as you use it. We won't hide any activities from you - they'll all be in your feed, just in a different order designed to ensure you don't miss the items that matter most to you. You can read more on our blog.

We will be slowly releasing the new feed over the coming weeks, along with close monitoring of performance and your feedback. You are welcome to add to the discussion below or contact us directly by submitting a ticket.

  • This sucks! Please give (at least the premium users) the option to have a chronological feed.

  • 7 pages of comments and the official response from Strava is completely ignoring all of those and basically saying you guys don't know what you want because you don't understand how it works... WE DON'T WANT THIS FEED!!!!

  • Thanks for the response Elle - I do have the new feed and whilst I don't follow all that many people (around 25) I still don't like the feed, for example I have some for today in almost chronological order, but then all of a sudden there is one for yesterday, then another for today, yesterday again and so on. It's just confusing. As has been mentioned numerous times, other social media platforms have gone down this path and as far as I can tell it is universally disliked.

  • Elle (not you personally, but Strava in general),

Thanks for replying, and your pinned comment. You state that an algorithmic feed aims to improve the Strava experience for us, but the feedback in this thread shows that this is clearly not the case for a significant number of your members. Therefore, the only sensible way forward is to make the thing optional. If it's only been imposed on a small part of your membership so far, imagine the outcry that you'll get if you try and force it on the remainder!

It's possible that in the past you didn't want to filter feeds in order to display lots of activities and show that Strava was growing. However, you've been so successful with the growth of your membership that peoples' feeds are now overloaded (since all their friends are now also members). The answer is not to mess with chronology by having some artificial intelligence sort and promote items, but to give people the ability to filter out what they don't want to see! Why is it so difficult to understand this?

    Yours in befuddlement,
    -John

  • I can't stand it either. Please can we have an option to turn it off and go back to chronological.

  • If "Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day" how is sorting their feed by an algorithm going to help them see any extra content?

If they aren't seeing everything, then they probably aren't on Strava very much, and won't be interested in your new algorithm anyway.

  • Please put chronological back. This is aweful. I keep seeing the same rubbish at the top of my feed from 2days ago. I want to see and react to stuff as it happens, not when I find it how ever long later.
Terrible decision in my view, chronological for the masses and this debacle for those who want it as a settings option.

  • I think we should have the choice to have in whatever order we choose. I prefer chronological order as that makes the most sense. Mixing that up is simply confusing. Especially for people who do not want to check multiple times in a day.
So this new "improved" way is a big NO-NO from me.

  • Just read the official response from Elle.  It's just the sort of response I'd have expected from Facebook, Yahoo etc.  There's no acknowlegement that the overwelming majority of Strava users do not like this new feed.  I would love to know whats going on at Strava - who's pushing this & why ?   It's obvious customer demand is not driving this so why ???   Has the boss of United Airlines just got a job with Strava....

Feeling sad - somthing that was brilliant is now bieng ruined & I don't know why....

  • Have been wondering what on earth has been going on with my feed for past few days and this is very painful.

I don't need this new "feature", I have about 30-40 people I follow and this just ruins my experience as now I see people activities all muddled up.

How are people going to see Triathalon activities? Will they be muddled up as well!

The least you can do is have an option for us to decide either to turn on or turn off. Am okay if its on my default I just need a way to turn off.

Was going to go Premium but this is putting me off for sure!!

These algorithms just dont work, it doesnt work for FB or Instagram and certainly does not work for Strava, chronological order all the way please!!!

  • That a year's worth of development resources have been wasted on this is upsetting; but when I found this feature suggestion for filters on the feed from five years ago marked "planned", it says there is some serious dysfunction going on:

  • The only thing worse than this feature is getting 500 emails a day, every time other people agree that it is unnecessary and stupid. How do I get myself unsubscribed from getting emailed every time someone responds to this post?

  • Elle, thanks for the reply.  As an end user and a paying one however, I don't want your algorithm.  In the very least, as many others have stated, we want the option of a chronological feed.  It can't possibly be that complicated.

Honestly, this was one of the reasons I closed my facebook account, am essentially inactive on twitter and hate instagram for what they've done to the app in the last few years.

Strava is the one good app that I use most and if it keeps trending like this and user feedback is ignored, then why should I/we stick around?

    Keep it simple, please.

  • Elle - thank you for at least replying but it would have been better to say nothing. This new feed is terrible and it is not true that for people that log in regularly that the feed is only optimized since the last time I logged in. I got in many times a day and last night I ended up seeing rides from a contact that were done days ago that I had already seen.

This feed is not what we want...LOOK AT THE COMMENTS!! Stop trying to convince us we will like it. If we are just a small group that was chosen for beta, please take me out of the beta. If not, I will cancel my premium subscription and may just use Garmin exclusively. You will lose us quickly.

  • Thanks for your response Elle. It would seem you are in deep water on this one! You are our only portal to make this right and as such when your team does 'regroup', can you please emphasise the fact that many people here will pull their premium membership over this, me included.

I have been 'UNFORTUNATE' enough to be a test subject for this chaotic new system that was thrust upon me some time ago. The algorithm you speak of has not appeared to have learned my habits as just this morning I logged into Strava to see an uneventful training run (that I was not involved in) that some friends of mine completed on Tuesday night. It is noteworthy that this is the third time that this particular activity has been at the very top of my feed for some reason. It is like Strava is trying to force me to take interest in this run for some reason.

Of late I have not even uploaded any of my runs and rides to Garmin/Stava as this has all just got too much. I think what Strava has finally achieved here, from my perspective is to push me away. It would seem that I have now completely lost interest and figured that no none will see it anyway so why bother.

It is simple to unfollow people to unclog a feed, but this is very impractical and not in the spirit of Strava. For example. My boss from work (I do hope that he doesn't see this) did a run, 12 x 400m sprint session at the track. For whatever reason he thought he would reset his Garmin at the end of each and start it again for the next 400. My feed was jam-packed with 12 mind numbing activities, just from him (he does this sort of thing all the time with his activities, stretching, warm-up, cool down etc, etc). They were popping up for over a week! It's not like I can unfollow my boss. If only this example could be simply filtered from my feed, that way, no one would be offended.

I find this new activity feed very frustrating. I do not even bother looking at it much anymore, as it is just so random and confusing. I lose interest very quickly looking at it. I can only imagine what will happen when this is released to the masses. Good luck with that!

  • Chrono order needs to come back. I just had activities that happened yesterday appear before today's activities. This is annoying.

  • It seems like it would be easy to add a "groups" functionality with groups that users create. For example I could create a groups for "Family", "Friends", "running", and "cycling", and then select those different groups in the Feed selector the same way I can with clubs. And judging from all the people who want a chronological option, why not put that in the Feed drop down too? That way if you quickly want to see what close friends or family have been up to you wouldn't have to see 75 people in your running club who did a morning run before seeing your brothers ride from the night before. I love Strava but the Feed control could use a little improvement. Thanks for keeping the progress going!

  • Terrible.  Give me strict chronological order, or at least give me a prominent and easy way to choose strict chronological order, and keep it that way.  Also, as another poster mentioned, I don't want to see other crap in my feed, and I would like to be able to filter out zwift entries.

I already have to jump through a lot of hoops to post my rides on Strava (from Windows phone and Garmin).  How much longer will it be worth the trouble?

  • Thanks for making strava much worse.... In the past I worked out who was out in the morning or afternoon or evening by scrolling down and it was simple and dare I saw logical and had sense to it, now it is entirely random... even my own rides.... rubbish.  I like to be able to see who was out and what people have done in a chronological order.... I don't care about what kudos/koms or whatever they have.

Basically it's rubbish on facebook and its worse on strava.

  • Surely if a notification of a friends new activity was available ( as many have asked for ) then we wouldnt miss said activity. Oh and the 5k PR history ( for me ) of course , garmin do it now im sure.
No , lets have a mumbly jumbly timeline instead.
Whatever happened to customer always right , instead of too many techies twiddling with apps for no apparent - or useful - reason.
    Ho hum.

  • This very statement shows why we should have chronological ordering:

"We discovered that on average Strava athletes miss almost 60% of the content in their feed every day. Strava's new feed presents a non-chronological ordering of activities based on characteristics we think are most valuable to you. "

This new feed almost guarantees us to miss content.  If we do miss something, and it is chronological, we can scroll back to find it... now - there is no chance of finding it.  The reality here is that engineers find this kind of feature fun to implement, and hey - look, Facebook and Instagram did it, so we should too!

Maybe some people like this, but give athletes the option to choose how to show the feed.  I know I miss about far more activities in my feed now than I did before, because I just stopped looking, which means I'll eventually just stop using Strava.

  • Please leave well alone! I hate this sort of 'improvement' almost as much as I detest the word 'awesome'. Is this because someone needs to validate their worth as a Strava employee?

  • I don't want this change either. If there is a demand somewhere out there then make it an opt-in option.
A much better idea would be to keep the chronological order but using the finish time and also enable us to create a favourites list to enable a quick review of those we're interested in most.

  • Facebook did it. Instagram did it and twitter did it. And everyone hates it. Why strava would you do it too. Leave the feed chronological. You don't know what we want to see. It has been annoying the hell out of me ever since it changed. Instead of "letting me see what I want to see the most" I'm missing what I want to see the most. Don't try to fix what isn't broken

  • Strava Team,

I love your app. I use it daily on my phone and laptop.

    This feature is a mistake.

Please revert to the previous setting. Or at least provide a choice.

Reverse chronological order is easy and simple. This algorithm is over-engineered. It doesn't make any sense.

Please consider adding groups, tags or filters...things that a user can choose to use or ignore.

And while you're at it, please allow users to pinch and zoom photos on mobile.

I love your app and your impact on riding. Keep up the great work.

    -Luke
