Sync only some activity types from Garmin to Strava

I'd like Strava to permit a user to disable syncing of Garmin Indoor Rides to Strava for the following reason:

I ride indoors on Zwift using my Tacx Neo 2T. I record on my Garmin Fenix 6 Pro using my Garmin Vector 3 pedals and Garmin HR strap. I do this so that I can measure HR, power and cadence on the watch, which (as I understand it) needs to be recorded in-watch to calculate Training Load, Training Effect and Training Status. These measurements are a main reason I upgraded to the Fenix 6.

However, I don't want the Garmin records to be sent directly to Strava because, while it would result in an accurate Relative Effort score, it ignores the fun gamification interplay between Zwift and Strava - namely, showing Strava Segments, Group Activity, and "Elevation", "Speed" and "Distance" from the Zwift course. (I put those in quotes because, unlike HR, power and cadence, these are virtual measurements.) It appears that a Zwift upload to Strava also produces an accurate Relative Effort score, which contributes to Weekly Effort and is an important Strava metric I use.

But when I run and ride outdoors, I want Garmin to sync those activities with Strava. Right now it seems like you have to sync all or nothing (and then go into Strava and delete the ones you don't want there).

Thanks for your attention to this, Garmin Strava team.

  • Just bought my first Garmin, and extremely disappointed by this issue. Feels like it could be fixed easily.

  • This missing feature is the reason why I am not using Strava. I hope it will be fixed after so many years.

  • Come on Strava, surely this would be a quick win for a developer to sync certain activities. I'd give kudos for that!

  • Or if you, dear Strava, were looking for a first step approach. Mark's comment here >> https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/203856830/comments/115000336350?mobile_site=true << Could be a good place to start - Story : As a user I would like to be able to set uploads from a connected partner/device to private by default - A somewhat low hanging fruit, maybe?
But I am intimately aware of the intricacies of the dev process, so I will not pretend it's just a quick tag on. I appreciate and thank you for what you already do 😄

  • +1 for this function! Can’t believe it’s not available when it’s been requested since 2017!!

I don’t want my indoor rides syncing only outdoors but there is seriously no option on this other than manually uploading or deleting after it auto syncs...crazy!!!

This is absurd to still not have this. I refuse to subscribe and pay money until Strava completes this request that's been outstanding for 4+ years... While this would ideally have granular controls, even a simple implementation by Activity Type would be enough for 90%+ users. The Activity Type comes through in the API with every upload from a device so it should not be that hard.

  • This is amazing. A simple feature request like this that has been open since 2016 and no response from the development team?

As an IT Development manager, I cant tell you that this is a few days of development from either side - but in my opinion it would be easier to do it on the Strava side.

1 - Add a "Configure" option to the Apps page in the user profile where you can see your Garmin sync settings. Today the only option is "Revoke Access" that I will press soon...

    • Either hard code an enum of the different standard activity types that Garmin provides in their API, or make a call to an API that Garmin exposes that gives you all the currently avaliable activity types (if they have added new ones). Preferably on a user level so any custom activites I have created in Garmin are displayed as well. But I am fine with the hard coded standard ones and then an option for "Other" in the end that I can uncheck...
    • Display a list of checkboxes for these activities where you can "Select the activities you want to sync from Garmin". I can accept that the the default is set to "enabled".
    • Bonus: Display a dropdown of the Stava activity you want to map the Gramin activity to. If you want both walking and hiking from Garmin to show up as "walking" in Stava etc. For me this is naturally one of the activites I do NOT want to sync to Strava...
    • Bonus: Add a dropdown after each activity you select with "Share with all, friends or only me".

2 - In the import code that parses data from the Garmin API - put a filter that only imports the activities that match the ones selected by the user in the configuration. So only import "Running" and "Cycling" if that is what was selected by the user. Set the visibility if that is implemented for different activites from the bonus above.

3 - In the import filter - verify that new activity types that have no configured mapping are NOT shown as the default. If I add a custom activity type in Garmin that could not med mapped, I could be notified in a message sent to me from Strava where I need to take action. "Your new activty of the type "Offroad Inlines" was not imported. Please go to the configure screen for the Garmin Integration if you want to show it in Stava!".

There you have the simplified change request. Just send it to your dev team ;)

Naturally Garmin could implement some config UI where you select which activities you want to share but then you end up with more complex configuration. I want to share x and y with Strava, x, y and z with NNN etc.

The problem is that Strava obviously have no interest in this, as they WANT a stream of as many activities as possible in their app. And the do not want us to only use Stava for cycling but for everything. So some product manager has made a very deliverate decision to ignore this reqeust.

  • +1000 I get follow up notifications on this thread on the regular. How is this still not something Strava is willing to fix? It is clearly super simple. I have completely turned off my Strava connection because this is so annoying. I get they would rather have an all or nothing to "log  more activities", but right now I am completely inactive on the platform because it is so frustrating.

    DO SOMETHING.

  • Hi!

Have the same issue here, due to covid I started trainning at home so all the Cardio workouts I did with my Garmin were uploaded to Strava... I had to stop the connection.

The only workaround here is to manually delete the entries as you said before.

    Hope to have a solution!

  • +1. I just signed up and will stop using Strava again. I don't need all my dog walks to post on Strava, but I want them recorded for myself. Uploading my runs manually from Garmin is too much work.

  • Hey Strava, your current advertising campaign says you'll put your best foot forward for those who subscribe and invest in you... This is an outstanding item for over 4 years now? How do you expect us to subscribe, when you won't address your user base requests... Any sort of update and response would be welcome at this point... Seeing as your last comment from Jeff was in 2018... How disappointing can you get with customer service...

  • Like many people here, I use a Garmin watch for all my every day fitness activities (workouts, step-counting, yoga, plus running, cycling and swimming etc) as Garmin Connect is a good overall tracker of my fitness. I use a GPS computer (Wahoo Elemnt Bolt) on my bike. I sync both the Garmin and the Wahoo to Strava automatically...so every time I go for a ride I need to delete one of the Strava entries to avoid double-counting. Surely there must be a simple way (as has been suggested many times over the last 4 years) to solve this through configuration of connected devices in Strava???

  • June 2020 question. Is there now a way to do this? Same issue as the guys above - only want GPS activities shared (run, bike, hike, swim)

  • It is truly remarkable that such a simple request can be outstanding after so many years.

What an embarrasment not only to the companies involve but to the entire age of the Digital transformation.

Will make a tremendous case study one day for students to learn how not to engage with customers and as an example of terribly lazy product development.

  • This is the type of listening to customers that the US auto industry did in 70s and 80s. I am waiting for a better platform to come out that I will leave for in a second. I am tired of strava. Most technology gets better and cheaper over time. Strava is the exact opposite.

  • Brian Gordon - AFAIK there is still no way to do this. I've changed all my activity default to Private and then manually change those that I want to show. Which reminds me, I forgot to change one from this morning... So ridiculous!
