Designate between a "Group" and a "Solo" ride on Strava

This would allow Strava cyclists to tag a ride as a group ride or a solo ride, and also be able to sort segment leaderboards by those filters.

  • How serious can STRAVA take these suggestion if Ellie made it in 2012 and it is now 2015. I would like to suggest there be a button. You simply add the designation A=assisted, S= Solo or P=Pro. You download your ride and manually added the button designation. This will give us all a better opportunity to 1) compete on a level playing field 2) understand how much we need to improve  3) help with the Pro problem of snatching KOM from us common folk. My segment mates are women 55-64. There are gals in that segment who are riding over 26 mph. I'd love to match their great efforts (Kudo's to you gals!), but to date I do all my segments solo. How do I know if they are pacelining, in a group or otherwise assisted? Unfair to not have a designation.

  • Ariel to answer your questions, you can see if a KoM has been done solo or group by going to the activity and you will read how many people rode together (this is not true all the time due some technicalities on how strava matches group rides, which I think is done by common segments done together)  another way is to view the activity using the strava labs activity playback where you can see an animation of the activity and you can select the riders to be viewed, and zoom in to see them moving try it http://labs.strava.com/flyby/viewer/ . Getting people to mark their rides as solo etc is utter crap I'm sure many who got the KOM in a group ride are going mark it as a solo, there is no level playing field, when you have wind assisted, timetrial bikes, age, etc. Use the filters on the segments to filter on age groups, clubs, today this week and your results. If I get a KOM wohoo and there always will be someone who find a ways beat it records are meant to be broken.

  • All we need is a "group" checkbox. If it is unchecked, it is assumed to be "solo", ergo "legit". What's the harm? If nothing else it allows me to filter my OWN achievements a year or more after the fact. Can't imagine this is too difficult to implement. C'mon Strava - help us out!

  • How can this not have been added yet!  It is just silly to compete with riders who are in groups of 6 or 7.  Makes the whole competitive thing pointless.  I know this has all been said before, but PLEASE, give use lone wolf riders something here!

  • it would make so much more sense, and i can't find the rationale for not doing it, except this: it implies a complete reset of all leaderboards! it should have been included from the get-go...

can anyone from from strava weigh in here, or are we just talking to the wind?

  • Apologies if this has been mentioned already.

This is simple - it would seem. Strava already has the "fly-by" feature that determines how similar cyclists' rides are to each other. Couldn't this data be used to determine whether cyclists begin and end at (or nearly at) the end of each segment, then mark segments automatically as "group" or "solo" beside each person's segments? Seeing my ranking on a particular segment below a group ride's times (obvious if you click "Full Leaderboard" and check the dates of the rides) is frustrating to say the least.

  • Chris Klassen yes flybys has been mentioned, haven't you noticed that some of your rides tagged that you have ridden with other people, I believe strava does this by matching people to riding the same segments one after another and at a similar time.

if a rider uploads there ride and gets the KOM and the rest of the group uploads 24 hours later, can anyone determine its a group or solo is the question, or does strava put in a provisional KOM holder for 24 hours / 1 week to see if others rode together on that segment.

  • @Chris Klassen I think the determining factor for a "Group" ride is that you have to ride something like 40% of the same segments as the other person(s) at around the same time. The problem I have with this is that I might follow a group for a while, or ride past a group and if the part of the ride has a lot of segments, then it's possible that my ride will be marked as a group ride, when in reality it is actually a solo ride that was near other people for a while.

  • A couple of other thoughts - with regards to the honor system, I don't think it will work because lets face it, there are a lot of less than honest people out there - and with Strava showing people riding in groups and drafting etc, I know this sounds crazy, but not everyone uses Strava! I could draft behind the entire Pro peloton, and if they aren't on Strava, then it's a "solo" KoM for me! :)

  • I have written an 3rd party app specifically for this forum to show you that a group can be detected, http://strava.lopeys.com/grouporsolo.php

It works by entering a particular activity segment effort and checks if the start and end times and segment time (5 sec window), they are just my simple rules, though I showing all activities filtered within the start time up to + 1 minute before & 1 minute after of that segment effort, use sliders to increase/decrease the time range

As I have said in earlier posts, checking to see if its a group or solo has to be done a day later or even up to a month later, there are people upload their files weekly and also new strava users  who upload a years worth of data.

Just understand that when you upload an activity is loaded it gets processed then and there, Strava would have to run segment effort checks for each athlete matched in a group when any new group activity has been found.

my app is simple (its to prove that its possible) and it doesn't take into account length of segment, check along the segment(flybys) if someone if drafting, like we see in a time trial, the shorter the segment it becomes easier to verify that its a group.

Please don't take this that you now expect strava to do something, as there plenty other issues, bike tech, wind, doping etc, that some would say there is an unfair advantage in the time achieved for a segment.

Use Strava as tool to check you performance and gauge it, not gloat about how many Kom's you or the many have or missed.

  • Hey Strava Community,

As you know, with more people riding and recording, it is getting harder and harder to crack the leaderboards. The 2015 leaderboards that Strava implemented this year was an interesting feature. It rewarded you for getting out earlier in the year.
I have an idea that turns the group vs. solo problem around.  Instead of fighting over one leaderboard, let's make more leaderboards.

Toronto recently hosted the PanAm games. We attended the track cycling event at the Milton Velodrome. Really fun to watch. One of the events is the Team Pursuit where you have 4 riders that ride around the track and a competing team is started opposite of you to give you pacing and motivation. The interesting thing is that it doesn't matter how good or how fast your first guy is but rather the clock is stopped after the 3rd guy crosses the line. So you HAVE to work together as a team. Sometimes when we are out riding with our social group you approach a known Strava segment. This usually busts up the group as different people with different abilities try to punch their way up the segment. It is very disruptive to the group ride. WHAT if there were "Team Segments". That is, you would register your ride before you go out with the number of riders that are on your "team" that day. Then the clock starts when the first rider enters the segment and stops when the last rider on the team (or second last) exits the segments. It would give you a whole whack of new leaderboards. Leaderboards for Teams of 2, 3, 4, .....etc.  You would be forced to work together as team to achieve the best time on the segment.  Then the Team of 1 (solo) leaderboard remains pure.
    Just a thought. Ride on!
    Doug.

  • on the few segments I've created, Strava retroactively calculates the KOM's to the beginning of time.  As GPS is essentially a system based on atomic clocks, Strava can definitely determine whether two or more riders are in close proximity in both time and space - and do so retroactively in the event riders upload at a later date.  No reason not to implement a group and solo leaderboard

  • Just to clarify my own request, I am not concerned that other people are "cheating". I use the segment times as a bench mark of my own performance, not as a competition. I will rarely, if ever, have a KOM on my own. The only serious chance I have is on a couple of segments that are sites of local "bunch sprints", and only if I am lucky enough to come around one of our local strongmen at just the right time. I am not nearly a strong enough climber or time trialer to capture a "true" KOM. What I AM interested in is being able to filter the results of my OWN achievements to see how my individual efforts are progressing. There are a few segments I ride several times a month as part of my regular routine. Sometimes alone, sometimes with our local group. Because of this, my PRs on those segments are usually from group rides, not solo efforts. While I know this, it does not help me stack rank ME against MYSELF. Make sense? To facilitate this, a simple check box on every ride I post would be MORE than sufficient. Yes, it will not help folks who are concerned with how they rank against others who may continue to "cheat" by not labeling their rides as group efforts, but for those of us who use Strava as a training db vs. a listing of virtual palmares, it would be a big help. Thanks!

  • I agree with Neil Hickley. just the other day me and a friend rode a segment i usually do alone. All of a sudden i have a best time a lot faster than ive done alone. So now im stuck with a record i probably never can match. And in years to come i will have forgotten which of my records are really my own and which are set with the help of others.

  • Neil, you nailed it on the head! I SO don't care about the leaderboards...it's all about how I am doing compared to ME! I can't do that if my PR's are all wildly skewed due to group rides. Most of my PR's are now meaningless sadly. Strava...are you listening PLEASE? Let ME designate (segment by segment) if it's group or solo. Then my PR's for those segments can be sorted as such, and they will have meaning again! What you do with the leaderboards, if anything I don't CARE about! Just let MY segments be sorted PLEASE!

  • Our friends in the Triathlon community have understood this issue for many years. Drafting, a much bigger issue on the bike than the run, is only legal in certain races. I have had most of my KOMs taken by drafting groups and not by individual efforts. Its just not a level playing field....A KOM/QOM for Groups/Drafting and a KOM/QOM for Individual rides. There will be people cheating - people riding with other who don't use Strava, but at least the simple case will be resolved.

  • I second the "mark segments automatically as "group" or "solo" beside each person's segments" (using flyby data) comment.  This could also be partially resolved by allowing a sort by date on the Full Leaderboard view since groups will often show similar times on the same date.
