Add more filters to search Segment Explore

I would like to see an enhanced filter for segments. With segment over-population (pollution) I would like to - for example - search for cycling segments that are over 3 miles long and have at least 10 people on the leader board.  This would 'thin the heard' and list the better segments as opposed to the 0.1 mile segment in someone personal driveway.

  • In the UK, we have short but steep climbs, the HC/1/2/3/4 classification is pretty useless to us. A 1km climb at an average of 15% (with 25% sections) is still only a 4th cat climb... yet it is a serious, serious climb for any rider!

We need more filters: filter by total meters climbed, filter by average grade, filter by length.

  • I love the fact that you can filter by climb... Cat ,3,2,1, and HC.  I would love to be able to filter out all of the short segments.  I am mostly concerned with finding good longer rides and love a 10.5 mile segment I found.  I have no interest in seeing 100 segments that are 0.1-0.6 miles long.  Additional filters would be great as well, perhaps something to do with popularity or times ridden or number of leaderboard entries.

  • Agreed - would love some additional filters on the segment explore. I just moved to a new area and would like some new ideas on good places to ride/run -- but using segment explore often limits the results to really short segments or else a bunch of subsegments on the same 3 mile stretch of road.

Would love the following filters added:

    Length of segment

    Times attempted

    Leaderboard Entries

    Times Favorited / Times hidden

  • +1. With the current popularity criteria longer segments have no chance and quickly disappear from the map. The filter on length would help to make them visible.

  • I am fed up with finding tiny segments only on segment explore.  Quite frankly, it is pointless showing them to me. We already know that every street in town has a 200m segment on it so we don't need  a search feature to find them.  Just ride around the block and you will find 4 tiny segments. How am I supposed to find the 10km segments? The only way I can find them is to stalk the ride history of other riders and hope to find longer segments.

  • Imagine how useful google maps would be if, the more you panned out, the more lanes and streets appeared, and no major roads or highways ever appeared....

  • As other people have rightly mentioned the map is too cluttered with short sections and finding a longer section is nearly impossible so being able to filter or search based on length is basic addition.

  • Sounds like the leading piece of feedback here is Segment distance search criteria when using the Segment Explore!

Thanks to everyone for their feedback, and we'll add your comments to the mix when we revisit our Segment searching features.

  • Thanks @Philip - there are no timelines or plans in place at this time. However, your feedback is integral to our process and prioritization efforts going forward.

  • Yes. If I had to choose 3 new filters, my priorities would be:

    1. total meters climbed

    2. length

    3. number of attempts / number on leaderboard

  • Would definitely love a filter by number of times a segment has been attempted. This way I could find the most popular segments in my area and see how compare!

  • Just because a segment is popular doesn't mean its a good section, it could just be the only way out of town and go through traffic lights and other obstructions.

  • Excellent point, perhaps a user based rating system for segments would help and a subsequent filter for "5 star" segments

  • When making feature suggestions you need to look at what is already available and then suggest an improvement. You are suggesting 2 things now...

  • @Philip and @Jeff -

Strava already has an internal segment rating system. It's based on how many views a segment page receives (among other things) and is not based solely on how many people ride/run the segment.

We use this popularity rating system to hide unpopular segments by default on activity pages, and also within the Segment Explore to only show the popular ones at certain zoom intervals.

Let me know if that makes sense!

  • Agree! trying to find interesting (running) segments with a decent number of kilometers would be a big plus. Zooming in on the map gives such an extreme number of really short segments (within 0.1 to 0.8 km) that the longer ones simply disappear. Especially around parks and other popular places (in my instance Westerpark in Amsterdam) where there are maybe 20 to 30 registered segments, and only 3 or 4 (that I found..) with a length of more than 3 km. Hope it´s possible to implement the filter, and really love the platform, keep up the great work!

  • Elle that does not make sense.  it is a vicious circle of crap segments that get more popular because your flawed internal rating system constantly spews them at  us to click on.  give us the filters we want. i love strava but it is so infuriating and there is just no need to be.

  • Let me explain why the current segment rating system doesn't work with the segment explorer.
    1) For any given map region Segment Explorer shows only the ten most popular segments
    2) Also a segment appears in the explorer only if the map region includes both the start and the end of that segment.
    3) So if you zoom in you can't see any partially shown long segments even when there are no other segments around
    4) But if you zoom out chances are there are more than 10 popular short segments around so the longer segments disappear
    5) Shorter segments end up being more popular for the reason #2 above and also because they have much higher chances to match to a run or a ride.
Once they increase in popularity they push longer segments out of view and there is no chance to discover them.
So, Strava should either include partially visible segments on the map or add a filter to select only segments that match a certain criteria like a distance or an elevation gain.
Also let me mention that the current criteria for whether a segment is hilly is also broken because it considers only the start and the end points of the segment and doesn't look at the actual elevation changes in between. That is OK for very short segments only.

  • Seriously a segment filter by length would be really useful! Would love to be able to find the longest segments of my area!

  • It is virtually impossible to find a segment that's more than 3 miles long (running) in my area. We need a filter!!!!!

  • I too would love to search filtering criteria included. I would love to be more aware of longer routes to compete against. Loops in particular are great for mountain bikers that often begin and end in/near parking lots.

  • Filtering segments on length is really a must...

When this is possible the longer segments will become more popular. Next step might be to "segment" whole routes. Then safety might become an issue at certain parts in the route. Maybe the unsafe parts can be removed from the routes.

  • In addition to filtering on length, it would also be great to be able to filter on the number of attempts and/or people who have done that segment (to find ones that are more or less popular).  There is a big difference between a segment that has been attempted 3000 time vs on done by 5 people.  Filter on the fastest (or average) time might also be interesting as would the age of the segment, etc. Probably pretty much anything you have in the database could be interesting to filter on.

It would be great to be able to filter segments (both running and cycling) based on various criteria. Right now, it is difficult to find segments other than panning and zooming around (or by name) which is fairly limited. What would be great would be able to select the area (either via map or by name) and then filter the results by various criteria. Some important criteria would be the number of attempts and/or people who have done that segment (to find ones that are more or less popular), time of the segment based on fastest time, length of the segment, age of the segment, etc. Probably pretty much anything you have in the database could be interesting to filter on. I personally would find this very useful feature and would seriously consider a premium subscription if that was one of the features added.

  • +1 for sure. There are so many segments it's hard to find them on a map, and searching by title isn't good enough. Please add more filters like distance, time, number of attempts, etc.

    Thanks!

  • +1 for filter by length. My rides are often over 80Km long, and I cross dozens or even hundreds of segments of 100-800meters (and some of the largely overlap). For me anything below 5Km is useless (but possibly for others anything above 1Km is meaningless). In these long rides, any attempt to find useful segments is tiring, to say the least. A plus would be to filter also by popularity / number of rides / whatever, to narrow the search further more. Nowadays we face a jungle of hundreds boring and useless micro-segments that turn the whole Strava experience one pain.

  • Hi Elle,

It has been nearly 2 years now since riders requested filters by segment length.

In April last year you indicated this feature was going to be considered. Can you report back on the result of that consideration? Is there any technical reason why Strava is unable to offer a function that removes short segments from map displays or search results? Or a preference setting where my user experience is improved by me never seeing any segments less than say 2km in length? Or how about just making all those micro segments less than 400m hidden by default?

  • +1 for filter/sort by average grade, and/or filter/sort by length. And show me the Segment results regardless of the Zoom level, or popularity of the Segment.  And it's fine if Strava wants to display a message that says "Too many Segment results, Zoom in, or adjust the filter criteria."

I want to build a route with the hardest climbing segments possible. And right now I can't look at a 40 mile wide view of my area to find the steepest segments, I have to zoom all the way in to like .5 miles to see segments appear. That sucks.

  • Segment length filter please :)
I am a bit tired of all the 10m, 100m, 200m and "around the corner" segments created by users with the sole purpose to have another KOM on a ridicilous segment - which can only be beaten while drafting behind a speeding car while having 40km/h backwind.

These super small (and silly) segments cover the actually good and challenging segments on the segment explorer.
