Add an Activity Type for Longboard Skateboarding

My buddy does  20+ mile runs on his longboard skateboard at 15+ mph, and there is a big scene doing descents.  It seems like a good new sport for Strava.

  • From Strava support:

Thanks for writing in. I'm a Community Moderator at Strava and thought I'd reach out personally. We don't offer skateboarding as an activity type because we choose to focus on primarily Running and Cycling to build the best product we can. Yes, we do have activity types for other activities, but you'll notice that there are no segment leaderboards for those other activity types. If we added Skateboarding, it would be the same thing and so, not a very good Strava experience.

Skateboarding will not be added anytime in the near future. Apologies if that's frustrating. I know you all throw some skin on the line!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

  • I think strava hates skateboarders. I mean really, they even list "rollerskiing" and in-line skating but they refuse to put longboarding or skateboarding on the list..

  • I can't understand the logic of not having skateboading / longboarding on Strava...    I mean come on you have Yoga,   which it great but you don't move, it's not like you can give Kudos for a 5 mile Yoga session....

  • It's getting beyond ridiculous to not have longboard / skateboard / e-board as options.

Based on the comment from Jeremy at Strava Support: "Skateboarding will not be added anytime in the near future. Apologies if that's frustrating. I know you all throw some skin on the line!" it's as if Strava have somehow convinced themselves that the frequency and level of injuries/deaths on skateboards & longboards is greater than bikes, inline skates and yoga... And they don't want any more legal cases on their hands.

    I'll click "I ACCEPT" on a disclaimer.

Their logic is pretty weak. Stair-Stepper? Stand Up Paddling? YOGA!!!? Someone should start a new thread to add an activity type called "Sleep".

Low impact "sports" get the nod, probably added those for their tech-savvy Grandparents.

  •  I can understand this issue from the point of view of the Strava people, especially if they really DO know a lot about the boarding community. All of the "sports" listed on Strava are generally LEGAL pastimes. It is perfectly legal to bomb a mountain pass on a bicycle. It is not legal to bomb a mountain pass on inline skates, but people really are not doing this as a rule. People ARE bombing mountain passes on longboards. The problem as I would see it for longboarding as a category is the fact that bombing mountain passes on a fancy furniture dolly is ILLEGAL almost everywhere (certainly in the USofA) outside of a few sanctioned events. By adding longboarding to the list of "sports", Strava would not only be encouraging an illegal activity, but would be complicit in encouraging people (kids  under 21 mostly) to ramp up the speeds on their already sketchy, illegal sport.

This is unfortunate for the rest of us longboard enthusiasts who cherish distance over adrenaline and just push, pump, or paddle our boards over vast distances as a FITNESS activity and not just a gravity adrenaline fix. Perhaps the Strava folks could remove the Inline Skate category and replace it with a category simply called "SKATE" and include a drop-down menu for the SKATE MODEL being used, same as they do with bikes and running shoes. As of now I am simply using the "Ride" activity type and selecting the name of the board I am using under "Bike Model". Then it really would not matter if you were bombing hills, pushing 50 miles, or pumping your board a few loops in the local park. Under  "Skate" you would list your board name or roller skate name and the description you type and the map data would tell the rest of the story.

  • Yeah! Skate or Die!
I use Alpine Ski or other sh... categories to my activity
    Skateboard Downhill
    Skateboard Street
    Skateboard Carverboard
    Skateboard Carver
    Skateboard Halfpipe
    Skateboard Bowl

It works on activities like skateboarding in a small Bowl https://www.strava.com/activities/463878481

  • There's an app called Cyclemeter that posts to Strava for you that supports skating/longboarding. It's only $2 a year and has all the premium features strava has. I've been using that since I do a lot of skating too and thought it was kind of odd that it wasn't supported

  • Haha it is ridiculous how many worthless activities types there are to choose from but no skateboarding / longboarding still.  Yoga? Stair Stepper?  Even just a general "Workout"?

How about a compromise and changing inline skate to just "skate".  Am still curious how someone uses strava to track their crossfit activity too....

  • I could see changing Inline Skating to just Skating. There are inline skates, quad skates, longboards, skateboards, ski-skates, and some other activities that fall under the category "Skating". Why leave out the quad skaters (old style roller skates) anyway?

A category called "SKATE" makes a lot of sense and covers a lot of ground at the same time.

  • would like to request that skateboarding be added as an activity to Strava activity list. As you know there are many activities like snowshoeing that might not be used as much as skateboarding would be.

  • Please add this, am very tired of having my friends assume I do 30km rollerblade sessions

  • I too have been skateboarding, but the closest activity is inline skating. Why not have skateboarding as an activity as well?

  • People, stop asking for this. Strava made it very clear they do not care what we want. They know better what "user experience" is "best" for us. Move on.

  • I'm not going to renew mine until it's added. Completely ridiculous, it's just a simple word to add in there, just like SNOWSHOEING!!!! why on earth would they not add Skateboarding to the list? This shouldn't even have to be a request in the first place...

  • Strava, why don't u listen to your users and customers? We are still using ENDOMONDO while you think skaters don't deserve a proper space on your app. Shame.

Keeping my account to follow my friends tho. Going elsewhere to participate.

  • Skateboarding is going to be in the olympics now.   I think STRAVA is really missing out on a ton of people who would probably get their app and use it.  I don't understand why they won't add it.  They could only profit from it.

I still log my long distance skateboarding on strava, I just use the cycling option on strava and then put in the title- sk8 or ldp when I upload my ride data.  I also use Endomondo and Map my Ride, both of which have either skateboarding or longboarding that you can choose to designate your activity.

  • I also requested this. They suggested that I suggest it in this forum. It seems like that does a lot of good, looking at how far back these responses go. Many people are making the same good points over and over, yet Strava continues to have "stair stepping" as an option while taking out a legitimate sport and mode of transportation.

  • Agree skateboarding and longboarding would be great, can't believe they don't have it already when they have the activities like Roller Ski and Stair-Stepper?

  • Adding Long-boarding would be great- please do it!   Really roller-skiing but not long-boarding?

  • Can anybody suggest an alternative to Stava that I can use for my distance longboarding?  Strava is a nice app but Strava is explicitly telling us that they don't want our business because Strava is for running and cycling and it's not for us.  People have been begging for years and their response is explicitly: "No, we do not want you as a user or as a customer."

So fine, screw Strava, what should we use instead?

  • I think we should make our displeasure with Strava more public. People should know how they treat their customers' requests. Leave the app review in the Play or App Store, Tweet with tag #strava, etc. and link to this thread.

  • I've had to add my skateboarding as a cycling activity and then select skateboard as my gear. Maybe we should drop Strava, obviously Strava is discriminating skateboarding because it's the culture we live in, so why support someone who is so narrow minded?

  • Yeah, adding longboarding/skateboarding should be a no-brainer (really, it's no work from your side and a nice little addition).
