View all Segments in Segment Explorer

I'm always looking for new segments to conquer and many times there are some good ones already defined that just don't show up on the segment explorer.  Is there any way to have a "see all segments" option?

    Thanks for the question!

We have a way to rank all segments by popularity. Popularity is determined by segment page views, starring the segment, setting segment goals, etc. In order to make the Segment Explore feature usable and not overcrowded with segments, we apply the popularity filter to show a maximum number of popular segments. When you zoom in, you'll see more segments appear.

I can understand the use case of viewing all segments, but we don't have a better solution at this time.

An update regarding comments since January 30th, 2018:

  • The segment search feature is now useless for me because there aren't any segments at all appearing in remote areas.

  • OK so firstly I just want to dispute Elle Anderson's original explanation of how this works internally.

In a nutshell, what she suggests is that if you zoom in, segments of lesser popularity will begin to display. I've seen other comments in this thread that suggest that the display is limited to the 10 most popular segments within the viewport. This can't be true, I've zoomed in so that basically the only possible segment is this 500m stretch where I live, and NO segments show up.

This is relevant because if it worked like it was said to work; I should still be seeing 10 segments, even if the one I hope to see doesn't show up because it doesn't outrank those 10.

What's actually going on is that there's just a flat-out popularity 'threshold' that bars certain (most) segments from being displayed. The way that it should _totally_ instead work is depending on how many segments _could_ be displayed given the current viewport, display the 10 most popular. That way if I zoom way in on some area I should see less and less popular segments without overloading the client. If you're wondering how to index the segments against the viewport coords; check out rtrees data structure for spatial indexing.

Also strava I really expected more from your frontend programming team. This is a _widely_ used app, and the solutions I laid out here are not that hard to arrive at, or to implement. Get your shit together (put it in a backpack, take it to the shit store and sell it if you have to. I don't care what you do with it, as long as it's TOGETHER). Hit me up at sikanrong@gmail.com if you need a real programmer to actually implement this; I'll come in there and sort shit out like god intended. Look me up on linkedin.

  • I sure hope the old segment search functionality is returned soon. Presently every run segment in my town is no longer searchable as are most of the ride segments.

One of my favourite things about STRAVA is to seek out little used segments in remote areas. It allows me to determine which tracks are physically possible to ride and what route riders took. This is no longer possible.

I'm also partial to a bit of Strava hunting when visiting new places and once again nearly all of the segments are no longer searchable. For town after town there are now no segments or perhaps just 1 or 2 that are searchable.

  • It is impossible to some segments in Segment Explorer that I know exist and fairly popular.

The explorer shows only segments if both their start and the end fit into the view. If you zoom in, the segment cannot be shown because it doesn't fit. If you zoom out, only 10 most popular segments are shown. And the most popular segment are all the short ones just because they have higher chances to be matched on a larger number of runs. Why I can see a segment that one person did only 3 runs on (if I zoom in) but I can't see my segment that goes through the same area that has 333 attempts by 79 people?

Furthermore the flat / hilly / steep filter doesn't always help. It considers only the difference between the start and the end and not the actual elevation change along the segment route. A loop segment would always be flat even if it includes 1000 ft of gain per mile.

  • Well, Elle, block these military areas then and not the entire planet. You know, I'm pretty sure there are no special forces units hiding out on my farm or my neighbour's.

  • Elle Anderson - Come one.  You have been copying and pasting that same statement on just about every thread.  What is up?  Strava suddenly is losing a lot of it's functionality, especially concerning segments, and at the same time stops actually answering support questions from it's users.  I am a Premium member and am really wondering what I am paying for.  I'm really close to cancelling my membership as a result of this crap.  I have multiple support questions in for days and no response from Strava.  Garmin Connect is starting to look better and better every day.

  • or a page two,three,four of segments

or better filters? segments over distance x? segments under distance x?

  • Exactly.  The distance filter would be a good one.  Also elevation gain as a filter would work.  You could also select to "See All" segments that start or end within the window being looked at.  If it's too cluttered, it could be filtered by a "show only the most popular" or the others mentioned above.

  • Sometimes I see segments, move the map and they disappear, and I cant get it to show them again. A list where you could go to page 2, 3, n would be really helpful.

  • The request is still valid, and will continue be more important all the time, as more segments are being created. "Next 10" suggestion was my favourite simple one in this discussion.

  • Yes I have also noticed that the Segment Explorer is flat out broken.

There are segments in existence which will not show up on the map (or the search) for love or money, even when you zoom in to exactly where they are (making sure to include start and end points).  On the left side of the map there are no results listed, not the "Top 10" that are supposedly meant to be shown for whatever region is in the map view.

C'mon Strava, how about you just roll back whatever changes you must've made to the filtering because it was working pretty well only a few months back.

  • Add another unsatisfied Strava Premium member.  This is BS.  Zooming in should show the less popular segments.

    Q. What is the point of "Segment Explorer" if you can't explore anything?

    A. None

    Q. As James said "what does heat map have to do with Segment Explorer?"

    A. None

Strava, you're losing it.  You're adding more ads and more BS, taking away more functionality.  Your customers, who are athletes- want more functionality and less BS.

  • Completely agree with this request. I'm always looking for new challenges in my area and the segment explorer screen is next to useless for this purpose. Even a button to say "next 10" so the screen isn't filled with hundreds of segments. That way you could have a look at the 10 on the screen and if none of them appeal then have the option to look at some others. The segment search is no use for this either as you have to know the name of a segment to find it.

  • I'm only using Strava a few months, and I notice the segment explore has actually gotten worse. When I first started using it I could see far more segments. Now, there are far fewer visible. The other segments still exist, and I've found new ones by accident, some of them very popular.

So why can't we not see more of them again?

In some areas, its clearly not a problem of overcrowded or overlapping segments - as there are plenty of these visible in Dublin city centre where I run sometimes.

  • @ Elle Anderson, I have a good solution for you:

Remove the filter All Flat Hilly Steep. And add a filter popularity  Least to the Most. That will resolved all issues, by changing the filter we could see all segments in a certain view, just by playing with the filter.

The problem in your design is having a filter for the user that is different from a filter to the display. That the reason why is not usable.

Please improve this unusable feature, or give me the source I will fix it for you ;)

    Cheers,

  • Any news on this?

Why can't we see some segments in the explorer?

for example I cannot find https://www.strava.com/segments/5481651?filter=overall in the segment explorer https://www.strava.com/segments/explore#location/Athens,%20Attica,%20Greece/type/cycling/min/0/max/0/surface/undefined/center/37.965652,23.791588/zoom/17/map_type/satellite

Why is that? The segment is not flagged, not hidden from me, is old and has a lot of uses.

  • Come on, man.... this is an app widely used around the world, with a huge popularity, and the segment search is totally crap, as many other things. I'm not just an angry and impolite user. I'm also a software developer who knows what he's saying.

Improve the application. Lack of resources can not be an excuse for you

  • @Alex Pilafian, Segment Explorer would only show a segment if its both ends are visible in the map area. So if  you keep zooming in all except very short or loop segments disappear. This is the design that makes it nearly impossible to see longer segments in the explorer.

Furthermore, it seems there has been another change just recently. It seems there is now an absolute popularity threshold, so less popular segments don't show at all even if there are no other segments on the map.

  • Segments that were there a couple weeks ago are all gone....in explorer and search.   Zooming as stated previously many times does not fix.  List view shows 3 where previously over 50 showed for the same area.  Frustrating!

  • Put me on the list of disappointed.  I've submitted 2 tickets before realizing that this thread was collecting comments. In an area with 50 segments...3 are showing.  We've been creating local segments to highlight new trails...all gone.

I read the letter before submitting everything but it didn't mention that it would make a lot of what we know and love about Strava useless.

Alex P, funny stuff.  Once you are on the job and sort that shit out maybe you can make it so you can tag somebody from the PC and not the crappy android app that has random enhanced features (like tagging) but then again, hardly any features at all.

  • Judging from the comments here this might be the beginning of the end for Strava.  Everybody will cancel their memberships and Strava won't have the money to fix the privacy issues they don't have.  I'll loose my urge to push for new segments (not that I can find them anyway) and get fat and die.  Well, it was fun while it lasted.

  • The segment search and explorer have been useless for the last week or so, ever since the story came out about the military using trackers and potentially giving away critical information about base layouts.  I'm hoping it is just a temporary thing.  Right now, segments that I used to be able to see all the time do not show up at all.  Whole areas that are ridden all the time don't show any segments.  I can't even find them by name in the search (I am typing in the exact name of the segment) any more.  PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

  • What does the heat map have to do with Segment Explorer?!  Where are my local segments on Segment Explore!  It looks like it is only showing popular segments.  Really frustrated and incredibly disappointed.  Strava please provide an update on when you are going to fix this.

  • I have the same problem. I suspect that Strava has set up an absolute popularity threshold in terms of Segment Explorer for the recent news that Strava Heatmap gives away some military secrets.

But I think this setup does not make much sense and it hurts a strong feature of Strava. First of all, soldiers should not upload their track data up to the Internet. It is their responsibility. For common people, many people including me like to (or have to) travel with bike or running shoes. When I arrive at a new place especially not very popular, it is the Strava community that helps me to find interesting segments to ride or run. It saves a lot of time and gives me extraordinary experiences.

Now the functionality almost totally fails. Nevertheless, I hope this functionality will come back soon.

  • Think it's time to switch to Map My Ride, it cheaper too.  I've just put a request in for a course finder and hopefully this will allow them to take a good chunk of business off Strava or motivate Stava to fix the problem before they run out of customers.  If some more users made similar requests to Map My Ride, this may help :-)
