Filtering in Activity Feed

Please add filtering options for Activity Feed (maybe somewhere in account settings?)

My use case: many of my cycling friends and acquaintances are using Strava–enthuastically. My news feed is drowned by short commutes (0-5km) and challenge status updates. It's getting harder to spot the interesting friend activities which I might want to check out.

Ideally, my news feed would contain only activities of people I follow, and, of those, only activities longer than 1 hour.

Thanks!

  • Totally agree with this request. Was looking up to see if this had been requested already.

  • Definitely. Would it also be possible to choose where the feeds are coming from? Area specific.

  • I concur. I don't want my friends' cycling activity on my feed because I don't ride, only run so ideally I would filter by activity as well.

  • I would also very much appreciate this feature added, even more-so now with the addition of Clubs showing up in the feed. There are many clubs I like to follow and use for motivation, but I'm not interested in the amount of additional clutter it's added to my feed.

  • Yes, I have also asked for this option many times. Seems to me it should just be there. Here is an excerpt of my feature request:

Is it possible currently to follow someone on Strava and not have them show up on your activity feed? If not I would like to make a suggestion that there be an option on a rider's profile to follow them but not show up on your feed. Something similar to facebook where you can have the option to "See First" if you want them in your feed and "Default" if you want to follow them but not see them in your feed.

This is one of the reasons I do not follow a lot of riders on Strava as the feed gets very crowded and takes long to find a rider's activity.

  • I only want to see cycling activities, not run and swim which inundate my feed. The only other choice is to unfollow people.

  • Agreed. Was looking for a way to remove completed challenges from the feed.

  • Let me filter my feed based on the activity and ride type. I would love to filter out all trainer rides as a start.

  • I agree.  Strava could have 2 options on this:

    1) create an "inner ring"  (see more/all activities) and "outer ring" (see fewer activities) of those one follows with customizable settings

    2) ability to customize settings for every single person one follows (ideally)

Areas that i would want to filtre in a customized manner are:

distance; elevation; trainer v outdoors; activity type; attainment of leaderboard cups/PR v not;  location (i.e. Country activity takes place in); removal of challenges feeds; photos

So for example i would be interested if one of the athletes I closely follow does pretty much any activity, but i would be only interested in a more distant person's activity if they completed either >100km/>1500m elevation/attained a top 10 on the leaderboard/non-UK ride/uploaded photos

  • I second all of the comments above. I had opened a support ticket asking to have some account settings that allow me to customize the contents of my feed, but was told to leave feedback here! My original request was:

"I would like to be able to customize my Strava feed. In particular, I would like to be able to filter out what I consider as noise e.g. home-trainer activities, and sports that I'm not interested in. I would also like Strava to stop showing me "suggested athletes" to follow. I already follow the people that I want to, and disagree with Strava's new thrust to get you to follow as many people as possible".

It would be nice if, when you opt to follow someone, you could set which of their activity types should appear in your feed (e.g. no runs, only biking for one person, everything except swimming for another etc.).

  • Please make this update Strava!!!  I purposely choose NOT to follow many people because I don't want to see every little activity they ever do.  I feel bad when people follow me, and I don't return the following.  I would like to see a filter that can be set on all those who you follow, such as "only see RUNS over X number of Miles"  or "only see RUNS containing more than X vertical feet" and last example, "only see RUNS starting within X miles of a particular point selected on a map or address."

  • It is October 2017 and the tread started back in 2015! Hello STRAVA! CAN YOU HEAR ME...I mean US! :)

I also don't want to see "Active Friend" on top of my feed. Every time I open my Strava I see the face of the same guy!

I agree with feed being cluttered with every little walk to the corner store ... We should have the option to follow but decide what to see on our feed.

Hope you can get this sorted out before 2020! ;)

  • I would also like to filter out my activities from showing up in the "Following" feed as there's a dedicated "You" feed for this so it just clutters up trying to see what people I'm following are doing.

  • I was hoping there was an option to follow someone. But Hide them from the news feed but I couldn't find one. Disappointed

  • Ugh. Please add filtering. Now that it is snowy in the northern hemisphere my feed is getting polluted with Zwift rides. I really don't care that somebody rode a trainer or have an interest in video game pics in the feed. It is a good way to associate "annoying" with the Zwift brand and probably not something they want. Please allow actual filtering of the feed. Or at least add classes like "virtual", "zwift", "commute", etc to the activity / feed-entry div so I can toss them on my end.

  • Agree too. I love Zwift but this is not interesting for me to see (except certainly to spy on my competitors ;-) ) Being able to select some categories in my feed would make it more relevant for me again

  • I dropped Premium over a year ago in protest over lack of filters.  Strava not interested in their paying customers requests.  Waiting for an alternative to Strava.

  • I also would like to see this filtering.  The only option at the moment is to unfollow people which is a shame.  I too am a premium member and I'm not seeing the benefits so might drop it.

  • We need activity filtering badly. I'm a runner and don't care about cycling activities or swimming. Also would be nice to filter to only see others race results.

  • I want a way to just find a specific person in the feed. Right now the only way I know is to go to my profile and then look at the list of those I am following (not a short list), but then from there, I can only see the profile summary of that person and not the activities (feed) from that person. If anyone has figured out a way to do it, please let me know. Seems like there should be a search (or filter) in the feed section. The current search is too wide and searches outside of my circle of following.

  • I’ve requested this already, turbo sessions, commutes etc, drowning my feed.

  • Instead of a simple filter strava build this BS.

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000086764-Feedback-for-the-updated-Strava-feed

And because the feedback isn't like they'd like it to be: "Post is closed for comments."

That's an interesting way to stay in contact with your customers.

  • I agree with Simon P. It was a simple request, filters, filters for everything people could possibly want. Filters for date ranges to find that ride you did last year, or for races only, or activity type, or even to select that today I only want to look at rider A, B, and C's activities. But instead Strava built a piece of shit algorithm that decides for you what you would like to see, and the order you see them. Being able to filter by length would be hugely helpful in finding a ride you remember you did but not when, or to remove the commutes people are doing that are short. But no, instead we get less choice, and worse experience. I'm too busy to scroll through an endless feed to see what rides people are doing and make sure I saw all of them. It's this, or perhaps I start a "David Post Followers Club" and get everyone I follow to join so I can see a chronological feed.

Of all the issues worth not renewing premium over, I think this is one worthy of it. Speak with our wallets. AND LET THEM KNOW THIS IS THE REASON. I keep reopening my support ticket on this issue, and that led to a survey they have recently taken. If we are silent they won't know that we hate it.

  • I dropped Premium over a year ago due to the lack of response about this issue.  Zwift must be paying them a lot of money.

  • I gave up on Premium a while ago. Strava used to be simple, cool and worth supporting - but now it's a Facebook lookalike with a focus on sharing as much noise as possible. I hesitate to post my commutes because my followers who aren't interested can't filter them - and I feel a bit guilty for polluting their feeds. Strava has shown no sign that they listen to feedback, probably because they have absolutely no intention of implementing filters or returning to a chronological feed.

  • 1. I also canceled my premium membership, however it lasts untill November :/

    2. Like David I use my lasting prenium support, to let them know...

    3. This hurts most, but helps best: I am constantly unfollowing people with swift- or other "plastic miles activities". I also unfollowed several people I didn't know, people I haven't seen for a while and people posting to many commuting rides. At the moment this is the only way to keep the stream more or less clean and clear.

  • How do i control what appears in my “activity feed” like adverts, suggested athletes and unwanted other stuff. I pay a subscription i think I should have a choice. I have tried to make this point to strava but i am getting the impression strava don’t want to listen. People like me pay for the product so it is logical they should listen. So many people have complained about this but I see no change for them or I, this is arrogant and not something I signed up for. I suspect that until people start cancelling there memberships they won’t listen will they?

  • Google "Elevate for Strava", then download the chrome or firefox extension.  Impressive.  I sent the developer a sizable donation.  Takes care of most of the things we have grown to hate about Strava.  I, too, canceled my Premium after being Premium for years.  I had tried to get through to them about the need for activity filters.  They get paid too much from Zwift to listen to customers.

  • Well, I cancelled my premium subscription a while ago in protest, and they still didn't listen. Many others have cancelled too. Since I'm now on the free subscription I don't think that I have a right to complain any longer, but if sufficient people opted out of the various Summit packs, something might change! :-(
