Group activity planner: Invite friends on a ride or run

There are many separate feedback threads found for this request, consolidated here. Please use this thread to leave your comments regarding this feature suggestion.

Request - Plan a group activity (Strava Route), pick an time/place, and invite your friends to join.

Through Strava Clubs, we have an existing feature to "Create a Group Event". Any club member can create a group event for the club, and club members can RSVP.

This request would make the Group Event form available to you and your friends without having to go through Strava Clubs.

  • I'd love this feature. I have a few regular rides each week that involve many texts. Posting in Strava would make it clear to followers who's in and who's out each ride.

  • It would be nice to be able to do this outside of a club.

  • Pushing this up. Works well within groups for club training runs, not so much for unofficial runs where it's just a few friends organising something.

  • This would be a great thing for Strava!
Maybe you should look at the cyclewe.com, they've done something similar. When you plan a specific activity (time, place, average speed, activity-type), then others can say that they will join.
But it should not only be a function through Strava Clubs, as an individual it should be possible to plan it, which will show up in your friends activity feed if they have that function enabled. And it should also be possible to search for all those planned activities (time, place, average speed, activity-type) or let these activities show up in your feed based on your personal settings.

  • It appears that the time of the ride is "local" time only? Now that we have virtual rides with zwift etc, it would be great if you could specify a time zone and if possible convert to each member's local time zone

  • Yes this would be nice, and yes I agree this is better done both in and out of the club. Club grouping is great, but individuals publishing their planned ride can attract more individuals as well. Hence more global popularity for Strava....

  • I'd just like to add my vote to this feature. I think this would be a killer app for all social fitness. I regularly go traveling to different places and look for cycling clubs and group rides to join in areas where the roads aren't familiar to me and I am looking for a safe biking route to do my cycling and run training. When I do this it usually requires a great deal of research effort beforehand whereas if Strava had this feature it could make it a lot easier.  I also am a local group ride organizer for a small group of 20+ friends in my community and currently just send out a blast email that has significant deficiencies in scheduling rides as the group gets bigger and I try to accommodate different varying individual preferences (start times, distance, pace) that cause it to be a cumbersome process that takes time and inhibits smaller spontaneous rides.  A strava feature that allows you to broadcast to friends (can make it semi-private or public) intended ride times and consensus schedule would be a godsend in terms of scheduling ease. Another feature that would also be nice to such an app would be seeing aggregated group ride statistics to help determine if a ride is suitable to a specific rider - it would be easy to see group pace, distance, open/closed, and typical group routes for any given geography. I imagine Strava would have all this data compiled.

  • I'm vice president for my Mountain Bike club, we have created a strava club. It would be great to have our race events made public outside of the club as all are welcome to attend.

  • I haven't tried this with a group yet. But I would like to be able to create a ride and say that it's open to anyone from my network and also select certain groups too. This would expand the ride to people I'm not directly connected to but whom are in the same group(s) as me. Thanks, David

  • Any progress with this?

I know Strava has Explore->Local for limited city guides and Explore->Running Races, but this kind of group activity planning functionality would be awesome!

Being able to create a private, only for followers, or followers of followers (like Facebook's friends or friends permissions) and public events would be so useful.

My main requirements would be to list a ride/run/swim I'm interested in or going to do, including: time, place, distance/time, speed, notes (for things like coffee breaks etc.), possibly linked to a route, and then be able to share/invite followers to join, or let it be listed in my activity feed for followers to find.  Allowing for the followers to accept/tentative/decline the offer would be great to.

  • This is a really good idea that fits well with the Strava model.

Rider: I'm out on a ride at x o'clock from location at hh:mm at y mph

    Ridee: I'm in!

Ridees subscribe or unsubscribe to alerts on an absolute or conditional basis. "I'm interested in rides within x km of <defined> home or <defined> work in the morning and/or evening in range of speeds" ...

  • Yes please!!! I want to be able to invite, say, the 20 people in my area who are closest to my ability (maybe determined by this season's times on specific segments) to an impromptu ride. E.g., "Hi folks riding at around my level! I'm doing this 20 mile ride tomorrow at 5:30 p.m., starting at XX, would you like to join me?"

Invited athletes would get a notification and could accept/reject/ignore.

I'm struggling to find people who can ride on my schedule and this would be a godsend. I would go premium for this feature!

I see this discussion started quite awhile ago, any updates?
