Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

September 9th, 2015

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • Wow so much passion here. I don’t even know if “bikeshedding” qualifies as a pun in this case.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson%27s_law_of_triviality

I don’t work for Strava and don’t care much for (or against) this change. I give all my rides funny names because I like to pretend I’m funny to an audience of 40 people most of whom are friends IRL who already know I’m not funny.

But did it occur to any of us Smarty Computer Peoples that this change removes a dependency on an external service (the geo lookup) at save time (waitnowait RECORD CREATION)? And that it might have been prompted by complaints re: slow save times, duplicate entries, lost rides, or delayed uploads? Which said service might have an API throttle anyway? So that time Strava ate my !@#$ ride…maybe it timed out waiting for a geo lookup? Just to give my !@#$ ride a WICKED COOL name like “3/21/2015, Washington County, OR?” Which I would immeidately have changed anyway to “Germantown Hill Repeats Powered by CHIPOTLE with Emissions Control by BEANO”?

Or that the default (!) behavior is also a potential privacy violation?

    Just askin’.

But by all let’s means go batcrap bananas on Zendesk about this. This is a fake holiday and I’m bored, and raging with our tiny fists against Big Heartless Strava in this Internet backwater will surely make all our life problems evaporate. Let’s threaten to cancel ALL THE THINGS! Run crying to another service! Write our own services because we are so darn smart! Tweet our displeasure to our many dozens of followers! Publicly burn our August Climbing Challenge Commemorative Jerseys! Be shocked SHOCKED that a business will make arbitrary decisions for opaque technical reasons! Stalk and harass the poor chumps tasked with paying attention to us!

    Ahhh, that feels GOOOOD.

Hello Elle & Jeremy I do not envy your jobs at all.

  • I agree that the change is not helpful. I don't use the Strava app much and consistency is not an issue. I setup my Garmin to name activities the way I like it, and then sync with Strava. I would expect Strava to RESPECT the name given to the activity when it is uploaded, instead of renaming it. This is not a consistency issue - the activity has already been name. Whey the hell do you expect me to name it a second time by overwriting the given name you get from Garmin. Don't be stubborn and fix them please.

Activity names were much more meaningfull before the update.

Please listen to your user's feedback.

  • The old naming convention was much better; the new one seems over simplistic and unhelpful. Please change it back, or better still, give people the choice of 1. using existing names (e.g. for Garmin synced activities) or 2. the old way.

  • This has been pretty disappointing. I've had Strava premium for awhile now - and the activity naming feature has never been an issue for me. However, the change from the Location/Date to the useless "Afternoon Ride" type description is just absurd. The reasoning is not there, the support replies have been vague, and I find that the general responses in this thread and others have shown contempt towards your userbase.

Do you care? Probably not. In any case, I'm cancelling my Premium account. I've paid for it simply due to my like of Strava, and not for any of the features. So - this is my only way to object.

Hopefully the folks who can actually make a difference actually listen to this feedback.

  • This really has got to a ridiculous state of affairs, but the bottom line is that Strava simply does not care about the views of its customers; therefore, I have cancelled my premium subscription.

Happy to renew when Strava takes a more customer focused approach.

  • I definitely prefer the old way of naming the rides...why not simply add an option in the users settings for the default naming convention and make everybody happy on either side of the fence.
My first instinct was to look through my settings/preferences to see if something had changed or there was a setting I needed to change.

  • I've got used to editing my own runs, but the dashboard of runs is polluted by meaningless titles from others that don't do so. What is most irritating is the attitude - ask for feedback on changes, receive overwhelmingly negative feedback and then refuse to acknowledge or do anything about it. My card number for my premium membership expired and I shan't be bothering to update it.

  • The old way was much better. Please change it back, or even better give us the option to define our own default titles.

  • I'm new to Strava but I just can't fathom how tough it is to bring across my Garmin Connect data as basic detail as the title of what I've just done. At the moment it makes no sense to me to have to manually update my activities in 2 places, personally I need a holistic view of my data so that I know what I'm looking at, not, morning run, lunchtime ride etc etc, it's driving me nuts.

Does anyone on here have a workaround where activity titles get pushed across to Strava automatically?

    Cheers.

  • So, over 370 people so far have taken the time to actually comment on this; imagine how many are also unimpressed by the change but don't know about or can't be bothered with commenting here. So, come on Elle, tell us the customers of Strava; has this issue been brought up at any meetings and if so what plans are in place?

  • It would be nice if they at least pulled over the activity names from Garmin Connect when syncing. "Boston Cycling" is a lot more useful than "Lunch Ride".

  • I also prefer the old naming system with date and place over the new generic names. Even a combination of the two would be better - "Morning Ride, 11/5/15, Los Angeles, CA"

  • Two BIG thumbs down on activity name.  Completely useless.  All data can sync from Garmin Connect but activity name cannot???  Really?  Was going to upgrade to Premium until I found that this in fact is the case.

  • I alsa prefer old system..was easy for me to find when & where I rode. I think that "morning ride + date + place" will be ok!

  • Come one,

From some months ago I have to rename every single day my default workout name because someone though it was better to mingle all the names as the same (morning run, lunch run, etc...). The way that it as before was perfect (date + place).

For controlling my activities, to better find what I did, when and were the data and name of the place were the workout started it was perfect as it was before.

Can´t understand why Strava doesn´t add that possibility as "option" in the settings, sticking with the actual naming as default and the "date + place" as an option that people can chose from.

It isn´t fair having to change all the activities all the time! Please respect all those how are asking for this feature.

If people wasn´t asking for it!? If it was something impossible!? It´s simple to implement, it´s wrong not to listen to the community.

    Thanks.

  • Old system of date and location default preferred.  Would prefer a customizable default option.

  • Given it's now the 3 month anniversary of the change, just wanted to take the opportunity to reiterate that I am still finding the changes a step back. Looking through mine and others recent posts over the past few months has taken so many extra 'clicks' to see where in the world people are! You not only have to click the map, but then zoom out in order to see where they are! Just put the state or country even, it doesn't have to be the municipality but we need some form of geo-tagging that makes it straightforward. Not all of us are in San Francisco!

  • Garmin Connect has that option as a ticking box, can´t see why Strava doesn´t make the same. :(

  • The old system was much better. When I review my activities or search for an activity in particular, I don't want to view them by time of day (morning, lunch, ...), I want to know where and when I did it. As simple as that. At last give us an option to chose.

Kudos on the website and app tho ;-)

  • Just adding another name to the list.... it's a seemingly small thing, but it does suck.  An option in settings would be good - I'm sure there's a backend issue behind it, and see the need/desire for consistency across platforms.  Get creative Strava, think customer-obsession a-la AWS..... :)

E.g. have title and display-title variables, or sync-to option - i.e. sync-to mobile (would have some restrictions, or just look like it does now with {<tod> run}), sync-to web (insert-crap-where-required, but most original functionality maintained inc {<time> <location>}.  Find a way :)

  • One more thumbs down for the current activity naming method (morning run, lunch run... ).  There are already plenty of explanations for why this method is worse, but just for the record: prior to he changes the activities had meaningful information in their names, now they have meaningless information. It's simple. At least give us an option to choose.

  • Please at least, give us a choice to choose between the 2 options, or better yet, provide us with the fields available and allow us to customize our own using the available fields.

  • A good equivalent to Morning (etc) Run, would be to leave it blank...

It tells you very little about the activity. For me, the old way was more logical, and better.

Why don't you create a poll, so users can give feedback?

  • The not-new-anymore way to name activities by default is really stupid. Date and place were MUCH better. Please do something, at least let the user choose between the default names.

  • Date and location was definitely a much better system. I travel a lot and it was so much easier to find old routes and rides with the "date + location" default naming system.

Why can't this still be an option?

  • And still no word from Strava...... when will they comment as to the obvious problems with this? At 400 comments? Perhaps 500? Who knows?
