Changes to default Activity names

Starting August 18th, we changed the way Strava automatically names your activities. Previously, when uploading from a device (via the Strava website or via a syncing program) your activities would be titled "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country". Now, your activities will follow the same naming convention as the Strava App. For example, "Morning Ride", "Afternoon Run", "Evening Run".

The default activity name is easy to edit. From the mobile app, when viewing one of your activities click on the "pencil" edit icon or select edit from the menu button. From the website, see the "pencil" edit icon to the left side of your activity page. You can also edit multiple activities from the "My Activities" view under the Training tab.

We made this change in an effort to build consistency between the Strava website and mobile app. Additionally, when viewing activities listed on the profile or Activity Feed, activities are always listed by date making it easy to determine when the activity took place.

September 9th, 2015

We understand that the new default activity names will not work for everyone on Strava. We welcome your comments and discussion on this thread and hope you understand that your feedback is heard and has been discussed with the Strava team. We do our best to cater to all the needs of our community, knowing that new features and product changes will impact our members in different ways.

We don't currently have plans to revert the changes or build additional settings to customize default activity names. Our product continues to evolve and we hope you stick with us knowing that we take your feedback seriously.

  • I prefer and would like the option to select the original naming format.  I like that it logs where the session was done.  Morning run or ride may as well just not be there, it tells you nothing about the event.

  • Change it back please,  or at  least give the option to have it either way.

  • I do not like this change at all. Ironically I was blaming the Garmin sync but then saw the naming convention is still good in Garmin. Then I blamed Fitbit sync until finding this. Please change this back, or at least allow the option of pulling a good title from Garmin!

  • Really dumb change. I loved having the city default there. Sometimes it was a surprise for me. Geez, how hard would it be to allow us to select what gets defaulted there?

  • I agree with most folks here...change it back or better yet, allow us the set the default in settings.

  • What could possibly be the reason for changing this? Was there any connection to the users at all to see if this was a change we wanted? I DON'T WANT some stupid cutesy name like "morning ride". Change it back to the way it was!

  • The other way was way better according to me... I would also like to have some metrics, like pace, distance, HR average in it! ANd for the date YYYY-MM-DD is easier to short if you export or anything. That was my opinion. Thanks to ask and hope to see changes.

  • The previous naming convention was way better. At least I could immediately see if my friends traveled and ran in an unusual place. Now all I see is a bunch of morning runs.

  • I don't mind having to edit the activity but I don't get an option to save changes so I end up pressing the back button and "Morning Run" appears again!

  • I can't see why the complaints. I rename all runs. Half the time the named town was wrong.

  • @Bob Douglas: Then for you the change has no effect at all. I am now forced to rename all activities. For runs/rides at my hometown it is just an annoyance. But for rides/runs somewhere else I have to look up the location. The change was totally unnecessary.

  • Chris is exactly right. I liked the previous naming convention, and now I must rename all my activities to the old format. At the very least, the city should be provided. It's informative and helps me search for rides.

  • Given many of the people that I follow are in different locations and travel a lot, I've always found the location information very useful. Also, I myself travel a lot and it's so much easier to keep track of where every recording took place by location and date rather than by Morning/ Afternoon/ Evening! I would very much appreciate going back to the old way!

  • I understand that not everyone might like the previous default naming convention of, "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country".  However, I did.  It'd be nice if it could just be a toggle choice in settings/profile.

  • Solution is simple: create a drop down or scroll menu with some more options than "morning/ lunch/ night" ride, which allows simple and fast changing. The changes you made are more a step backwards.

  • Terrible change, makes the whole activity page look dull and un-interesting,, bring back the old system,, that at least stated the naming in the correct manner!

  • Only you and Microsoft can remove something very useful and then few years later add it back as an awesome new feature! And it was because of the same exact reason: Having same experience across devices... For God's sake, desktop and tablet is totally different; same is Strava App and other devices we use, is also totally different.

Shame on you for such a bad UX decision!

  • Really, "We value your feedback regarding this change, so if you have any comments or questions please let us know. If you have a favorite style or convention when naming your own activities, we'd love to hear it!" ? STRAVA must have been reading "50 shades of grey" instead of listening to their users. Probably they will come around in a year or four, same as it took them to install the manual photo upload....

    Please change it back...

  • Not a huge deal on way or the other but I prefer the more meaningful date/location format.

  • The previous default naming convention actually provided useful and interesting information. I could see that my friend X was running in location Y, or I could easily scan my own previous activities when looking for a run at a specific location. The new default naming convention is banal, boring, and useless.

  • Funny - I assumed the mobile "Morning Run" names were slapdash placeholders until developers figured out how to add more useful information on the mobile app...

How about: Morning Run - Boise, ID

  • Worst change in a long time.  If anyone was thinking, you should have changed the mobile app to match the web-app.  Please undo this change ASAP.  Or at least provide an option.

  • This is a really dumb idea! Who thought of that??? The new description is totally and utterly useless. Give us an option to change it back!!!

  • The information was so useful. I think it was better to make the mobile app consistent with the web app. So I would be very pleased, if Strava would consider this remark and go back the  "mm/dd/yyyy City, State" or "dd/mm/yyy Town, Region, Country" both for the mobile app and website.

  • I have been wondering for some weeks what setting I had accidentally changed - now I know the reason!

Please change it back asap - the bland new default is awful.
