Display current speed/cadence (not avg) in App

Is this still a pay only (premium) feature?   I have seen several threads that date back several years talking about this being added, but appears to only be a functionality for the premium/paid app.

If Strava has no intent of adding this basic functionality to the free app, please let me know so I can move on to one of the multitude of other free apps that do have this functionality.

  • I would say they need to have these only for premium athletes only not free as to takes lot of work to build this funtions

  • Strava is the only app I can find which does not offer current speed/heart rate on the display while biking..  insane.

  • Absolutely insane.  There are so many free apps that do this.  And worse yet, they upload to Strava.  So why do I need to pay for some very simple math on the display?  With all due respect to Francois Jacobs, he is completely ignorant of the math or how hard this is to code.  The code to display current vs average velocity is trivial.  Hardly a "premium" bit of software engineering!

I use Wahoo's free software, which does exactly what I want, and by the time I'm off my bike the data is synced with Strava.

  • Agree with MW - as a SW design engineer (25+ years) this function is a relative "no brainer" - in fact current speed is less calculations (lines of code) than average speed.

Not a Premium feature.  A bummer for Strava as I'd run with it for full integration - but for me DEF not $60/year.  I'm moving on.

  • I like the power of Strava's web based stuff.  So, I ditched the buggy and not helpful Android app, and am now using Wahoo's app exclusively.  And yes, buggy--when Strava auto starts EVERY TIME I reboot my phone, forcing me to go into app setting to force close it (and yelling at me "Workout paused" at the worst times).  Strava mobile is terrible, Strava desktop pretty cool.  So I get the best of what suits me now.

  • I don't mind paying something for the app with live speed but 8 euro's per month for just a live speed is ridiculous

  • Bike Brain gives current speed. Strava average speed is useless to me. You can increase it easily if you're fed up with slower speeds (such as steep hill) causing average to go down. Go as fast as you possibly can at the start of a ride, preferably starting at the top of a good long hill or overpass ramp, and then riding with faster and slower speeds, as needed, for the rest of the ride. Your average will be way up. A slow average speed caused by one steep hill discourages me and makes me want to give up the app. And I am sure I'm not alone in this.

  • I've been using Strava for YEARS to sync my activity and it's been fine. Until I decided to mount my iPhone, was very disappointed to see there is no current speed setting and only average speed. That is only important at the end of a ride not during. During you would want candence so without that speed is the next best option. Strava also doesn't work with the Apple Watch so it's another fail from Strava which is a real shame.

  • I'm a premium member and still can't figure out how to display current pace. Any ideas?

  • If by current pace you mean average speed, then it should already be displayed. If you want actual current speed, you can't do it - it's not implemented in the app.

  • Check Bike Computer app for android on google play store. It provides live speed status, and other required things you get on strava deshboard. Even it can sync its ride with strava to keep your social circle updated. However syncing of ride is optional, and you can choose not to sync with strava.

  • I was just about to ask how to get current speed to show.

Guess I'll have strava running in the background and use runkeeper for actually good info during my bike ride.  Honestly I only even have strava for the achievement hunts, as they give me a goal to hit for the month.  I just started using it this morning when I discovered no current speed shown, just distance and time.

  • I keep Strava running in the background and use BikeBrain to watch my current speed. I could care less about average speed.

  • Disappointing and unacceptable. I'm a long time Strava user for running but will not use it for riding if I can't get current speed/cadence. Average is useless.

  • I just added Analysis. I thought that would give me current speed and cadence? Nope! Guess I’ll be canceling the subscription before it renews again.
Crazy that we can’t have that for free or paid?

  • PS it doesn’t even show what my avg cadence was in my recorded session!!! Seriously?
    Am I missing something here?

  • Just thought I'd mention (for Android users, not sure if there's an equivalent app for Apple) that you can use an app such as "Maps Speedometer" to overlay a speed measurement on top of any other app.

I've used it for years on google maps before they integrated the speed natively.

Works very well and starts up automatically when the specified app is launched (can be set to start with any specific app).

You can also change shape/color/size of the overlay so it can be very seamless.

    hope this helps

  • Thx all, I've used BikeBrain for past 4+ years and love it's iPhone dashboard, as I have that mounted on my bike.

This Starva thread answered my Q ... no good bike dashboard like BikeBrain
