Policing E-Bikes

Anyone have ideas on how to police E-Bike rides being uploaded to Strava?  I've been watching lots KOM's go bye-bye recently.  As E-Bikes become more popular this will continue to be a problem.

  • Another reason why strava is becoming irrelevant. Original post was >2 years ago. I am currently using the 2 month free trial after they hid most of the leaderboard functions behind the subscription. Why on earth would I pay for a feature that is so easily abused both intentionally and unintentionally? Flagging system is completely broken

  • Don't forget that many people who post to Strava do not do it deliberately and so may not get the chance to flag the ride as an ebike or to select segments. For example if you have a Garmin GPS and Garmin Connect is connected to Strava then when you upload to Garmin Connect (where it is correctly flagged) then it automatically logs it to Strava. So it may not be the "fault" of the rider at all and they may never look at Strava.

  • After the Garmin auto upload, take an additional 10 seconds and change the ride to “e-bike” on your phone. If you can’t manage that, then delete your ride or stay off Strava all together. We can all use the app, but eBike users gotta respect the platform. Last resort...public humiliation of the weekend warrior that crushes the pro’s climbs can sometimes be entertaining and rewarding, especially if they are followed by others.

  • I don’t understand why anyone with an ebike would even want strava? It’s about testing your abilities and stamina on a bike. With ebikes it’s not even your watts, so why does it matters how fast you climb or ride? Doesn’t make sense to me, but yes strava needs to get this issue under control or it will be the death of the app. I think people that put in real effort to get top 10, don’t like being jumped by cheaters riding motored bikes.

  • Johnny R. I'm on an eBike after decades of riding and racing road and MTB. With eMTB's anyway, the levels of 'assist' provided by eBike are relatively fixed, to improve on a segment it still requires more effort from the rider, and the competition with other eBikers is relatively even as power restrictions are standardised. That's if anyone cares about 'competition', if someone is riding a custom eMTB with illegal mods then that's cheating, but I doubt eBikers would care that much, I'm riding against myself.

To get anywhere near the middle (let alone KOM) in the eBike leaderboards on Strava requires running the bike in the highest mode (Boost or Turbo) and standing the pedals and ride as hard as you can, you still finish top of the hill gasping for breath and covered in sweat, even on an eBike. Strava is still fun for eBikers.

  • I've been using Strava for about 5 weeks and find competing in the segments (in my age group) fun and motivational. When I find a very strong rider in my age bracket I am inspired. Today, so impressed was I that I was about to give kudos to a complete stranger - until I saw a photo on their profile of their e-assist mountain bike.

To be fair, this person may not be aware that they just set major records in open competition as a 55-65 year old. They only have two activities in the last 4 weeks.

Many good suggestions to Strava preceded this post. Strava, what are you doing to fix this issue?
