Strava Live only works for flat/uphill sections.

Using Polar Flow you can only sync flat or uphill sections with the Strava Live feature. This makes the Strava Live feature on the Polar V650, for example, a completely useless feature for mountains bikers how might wish to use the bike computer for more than just pedalling uphill.

There are many, many mountain bikers use mainly use Strava for recording their times on downhill sections of trails. And not having the ability to link Strava Live to these downhill sections is a real shame.

I really hope that Strava and/or Polar put their heads together and fix this issue.

  • Its not an issue, Strava have stupidly banned all downhill live segments now that are less than 0.25% from start to finish. Im pretty cross about it, as are the people I ride with. So won't be renewing my membership unless they revert.

    What next, flat sections?

Im not fussed about seeing how well Im doing during the segment, I just want to know where they are and when they start.

  • I agree with the comment above.
During a downhill ride I would never look at the screen and wouldn't be bothered if the live feed was absent, but some times knowing where the start and finish of a starred segment is all that is needed. Some times checking at a fork in a track to check the correct route is being followed as a quick reference. Some segments may be negative overall but the long climb in in the middle may be where a live segment is used.

  • I'm with Darrent and David above. I just want to know where the start is. I don't look at the screen during the descent. If Strava is removing Strava Live for DH sections, then I'll revert back to a free membership.

  • I also agree with the above posters, the idea to remove live segments on downhill segments is beyond annoying.... especially for mountain bikers that actually compete in downhill/enduro events.

I arranged a few events using Strava segments this summer, and the live segment feature helped me set the correct start/stop to the segment - removing this feature makes me seriously reconsider my premium subscription for sure...

  • I submitted a ticket solely to ask Strava if they are doing this, and to give them feedback that I'll stop my paid subscription if they do it.

Here's the reply they sent me:

    "Hello Denton,

At this time, we do not sync downhill segments to devices for Strava Live Segments.

    Thank you for understanding.

    Best,
    Strava Support Team
    "

They have poor customer support. They could have followed up with something like, "We won't update live as you're doing a segment. BUT, we are considering leaving in start points so that users know where segments start."

An equivalent app for mountain biking is ripe for being made that has features mountain bikers care about.

  • I have also raised a ticket. The response was equally poor. An arbitrary-0.25% is ridiculous as some of my favourite and most competitive segments are undulating up and down (Surrey hills) and the start and finish are more than -0.25% different. As a result my Wahoo will no longer syncs them and counts me down to start the effort.

I deal with risk management for a living, and this looks like a particularly lazy policy from a Strava. They haven’t conducted any real risk assessment and have simply imposed a lazy, poorly considered policy.

Perhaps if they improved their KOM/QOM algorithms to kick out segment times where average speed is higher than max speed (physically impossible) then their downhill segments records wouldn’t be so inaccurate in the first place?

I will not be renewing my Summit subscription unless they look at the starred segment risk properly and make some common sense changes.

  • Agree with all the above comments, totally stupid to put all downhill segments under the banner of -.25%.  I am a road cyclist and cannot even download a live segment of 0.05%.  I like using this strava feature to challenge myself to be a better cyclist, work harder, not necessarily against other riders.  Summit definitely not worth the money if this feature is removed forever.

  • I agree with everyone.

I bought my V650 specifically for live segments feature.

They completely crippled it and have no use for summit anymore.

As most of you say, just having the start and end pts is more than enough.

Leave it in and put a disclaimer, that should solve it....wow, not premium for me ever again at this point

  • I share similar frustrations as you all and received the same response when I gave feedback.

I think the idea about identifying the start is great.

The feature I miss the most is the starrred segment summary.  I never watched the time while actually doing a dh run, concentrating too hard.

I don’t need the live time while doing the starred segment but the summary after I have completed the segment is very missed.   Did I get anywhere near the my PR?  Did I smash it?  When I’m on a 3 hour ride it’s good to get some real time feedback on how I’m going which was very motivating.

Now I only know at the very end of the ride.   Cmon strava, surely you aren’t just about road riders who just climb hills?

  • Aggrieved by this too. Oddly, seems to not sync on my Wahoo Bolt, but does sync on my Edge 810 - is this an option that each developer can choose to implement?

  • I'm a mountain biker and just bought a wahoo basically for this. Again, no way for me to look at a screen while riding but would love that mid ride feedback in addition to segment start points. I will be cancelling my membership for sure.

  • Wow... So strava is basically racist against downhill... So sorry developers that we aren't all a bunch of dirt roadies who only care about climbs.

Wont be renewing my "Summit" BS after this news... What next? Strava only works for running??

  • Simply implement a feature where downhill segments are disabled by default and you have to go into each downhill segment on the website and enable it, with a checkbox as a disclaimer. Problem solved.

  • It's about danged time!

Next, ban all "efforts" of >1 mph. Or better yet, >1 kph. That are not done on adult tricycles.

  • and here I was trying to get a local 1.5 mile section trying to sync to my Wahoo Bolt. I've just spent over an hour with what I thought was a Wahoo problem. I could swear I used to be able to sync all segments, but I couldn't get this one I wanted to target today to sync.

Turns out this relatively flat section of road is actually a -.7% grade, so Strava is no longer allowing live segments on it.

Live segments were literally the only reason I paid for premium. If I can no longer get live segments, I should probably stop paying for the service.

  • Hello.

Agree with all comments. -0,25 it’s flat. If they where talking about more than - 3% I could understand but 0,25?
The “genius” that thought about this knows what are -0,25%? Not think so. I think that that genius never had ride a bike in is life!! 😤

  • Hi all,

    Agree 0.25% is pasts!

Are you all for cancelling your summit membership? Surely if they lose the revenue they have to rethink this.

  • Yep! I cancelled my paid membership a few months ago for this reason. I put in my feedback when cancelling that it was for this reason.
