Strava Live only works for flat/uphill sections.

Using Polar Flow you can only sync flat or uphill sections with the Strava Live feature. This makes the Strava Live feature on the Polar V650, for example, a completely useless feature for mountains bikers how might wish to use the bike computer for more than just pedalling uphill.

There are many, many mountain bikers use mainly use Strava for recording their times on downhill sections of trails. And not having the ability to link Strava Live to these downhill sections is a real shame.

I really hope that Strava and/or Polar put their heads together and fix this issue.

  • Sad I thought it was my wahoo’s fault half my segments don’t load thinking as an adult who’s paying for a service a disclaimer would be sufficient.

    -.25% avg doesn’t justify safety

    Just sad

  • Same here. Wanted to sync my segments. Mostly DH Mtb segments. Did not work.

I'm paying for an Membership and can't use my segments. That's not fair. I'm going to cancel summit.

  • I have to agree with the comments made here, the decision made here is baffling.

I'm currently on a Summit trial and live segments are the killer feature for me. Without more leniency on downhill segments I won't bother to pay when the trial expires. It doesn't need to be available for -10% segments, but at least allow -2%, that's hardly even perceivable as downhill.

  • Just spent 2 hours trying to sync a segment to a new bolt that is too dangerous at -1.5%

What a load of crap, cancelling summit now.

  • Just got a new Wahoo Elemnt Roam and was wondering why the 1 segment I have starred (I'm new to Strava and cycling) wasn't syncing, and just discovered this stupid "no downhill segments" rule.

Maybe I can understand the reasoning, but not the execution. 0.25%?! My favourite segment in Tempelhofer Feld - an old AIRFIELD in Berlin - is blocked. It feels as flat as can be - as you would kinda expect in an airfield, but I guess it must end slightly more than 0.25% below the start. Such a dumb rule!

  • I only signed up to Summit for the “live Segments”

90% of my starred segments are “downhill” apparently (even though some are practically flat)

Feature is now useless. & I’ve wasted money on a Garmin.

I’ll be cancelling before my free trial ends

  • Even an opt in/out feature would do.

That way all the mtb'ers and cyclists that arent worried about a slight slope could use live segments.

  • This crap decision by Strava is making them less and less appealing. I haven’t paid for Summit since. This poor policy needs more coverage amongst the community.

  • Something related that I didn't realize until a few days ago, for these 0% or less grade segments, you will also not receive a notification if you lose a KOM.

  • Hi Strava guys,

this is a very bad news......hard to say would could be the reason for such a decision, if a bit strange juridical system in your country where you can pay billions for whatever if the other party has a good attorney, or a political correctness madness where you feel responsible - as seen in your blog - more or less also for the Corona virus expansion by/between Strava athletes.
    .
Please take into consideration, that not only me is living in the small and middle hilly land, where pure flat practically does not exists, so a considerable part of the meaningful segments are up-down-up-down with significant uphill(even maybe short) passages which makes segment pretty hard, even if total average grade on a few kilometres is less than 0.25% from start to finish.....and if this is a DOWNHILL for you than sorry....

With this decision you simply cut from PAYED live segments everybody but Netherlanders and settlers of the Nevada desert.

Also please consider, most of the Strava PRO users are paying to you because of the two reasons:
    1. they want to support you because Strava is really a cool tool
    2. LIVE SEGMENTS
Now many of them including me has one reason less.....

Also my PRO should be renewed in a few days, I'm strongly believe, you will reconsider this your decision during this period and I will have a reason to prologue it also next year.
    Bye.
    Eduard.

  • To circumvent this issue we can use our mobile phones whit strava running. It shows the 'forbidden' segments.

But of course this is not the real solution.

I wrote them today about this problem.

I'm a paying subscriber and my main reason is to see live segments. All of them.

  • Another 'vote' to allow live segments on Devices that are less than - 0.25% ... it's up to the owners of those devices which segments they star / download onto their devices. If nothing else, 0.25% is not even really downhill. I'd say anything above -1.0% is effectively flat (but even -1.0% is arbitrary/subjective)

A key reason for me buying a Garmin Edge was for the Live Segments - this Strava limitation severely reduces the value of such devices. Garmin etc must be concerned.

  • I agree with the rest of you. I bought my garmin fenix 6 for trail running and not being able to use segments just because they are downhill is just unbelievable. Pleas give us back our segments!

  • So at least half of all of our popular segments are now live disabled in my locale. The knuckle head who thinks -.25% is an ideal number to implement safety features is not a cyclist, most likely a lawyer who doesn't ride. Nobody has ever died on anything less than -5%. Fix it or lose another paying member...... Do you plan on disabling all segments when wind speed is greater than 10mph? I mean honestly guys and gals pull your heads out of your arses.

  • Bonkers. Strava banning the enabling of all live segments that have a average downhill of .25% . What a joke

Did Strava notify all their premium subscribers of this?

    I didnt see it.

I've also raised a ticket on this and will not be renewing my premium membership.

  • Glad I came across this. Thought my new 530 was messed up or something when trying to sync starred Strava segments. Noticed only the uphill ones syncing... so started searching... Will also cancel/not renew Summit.

  • Tried for a week to get my live segments to update on my edge 520 plus, reset everything, unlinked, relinked, unstarred, restarred, factory reset etc.  Nothing would work!  I'm a heavier rider and look out for downhill KOMs, now they won't sync.

Why didn't Strava notify premium users?  Live segments is the ONLY reason i subscribe, and this ban on downhill segments really is a kick in the balls for the heavier rider!

Will unsubscribe now, i can't compete with the weight weenies!

  • I agree with all the comments here, and count me among those wanting a change.  I could see disabling live segments on those that are flagged as dangerous, but the way it is now filters out about about 3/4s of the segments on my daily rides because everything around here is hilly and any segment longer than a quarter mile is going to have both ups and downs.

  • Please remove this limitation. Live segments are very useful when you are scouting new segments and want to understand where start and finish positions are.

  • I also do not understand why you shouldn't be able to switch on downhill segments for the live few. I mostly ride enduro mtb and the only thing I'm interested in is to see the start and endpoint of the DH segments there! I do not need a liveview for this segments, just the "it starts in 10m.." and a signal at the end.

    Please enable this!

  • I've wasted hours before seeing this is actually a limitation of Strava.  Mountain biking is an inherently risky sport to begin with.  Let us decide and sign away your liability.  Seriously, do you think bike manufactures would try to discontinue DH and enduro bikes because of liability?  Maybe aero road bikes are too fast, better ban those as well.  Maybe Strava should only serve clients who can guarantee they ride beach cruisers.  Ahhhhh!

  • Just subscribed to view live segments and leaderboards. Just bought an Edge 530 and also spent hours trying to figure out why segments wouldn’t download. I’m so torn on what to do and afraid to say this. But if you want to see live segments of all starred segments Uphill and down you can use your phone. It’s an inconvenience to mount and drains battery life but it is as of now still available

  • Strava why not just black the screen out until the segment is over? HELLO?  I've been struggling trying to figure out how to use the live segment feature... Its the only reason I purchased a Garmin in the first place. The fact that Downhill segments are not eligible for segment goals has me so upset. I certainly will be canceling my membership over this.  Like I initially said, why not simply black the screen during the segment or give us sound cues.  At least give us the info once the segment is over.  I'm enraged over this...  No love for MTB.

  • It looks like there is a workaround. I am going to explore it. Using some tools it is possible to export Strava segment as a FIT file and then drop it into Garmin\NewFiles folder on the device, after which the segment would show up on Garmin device.
