Samsung Gear s3 not uplaoding activity

I have a Samsung gear s3.  I can log/record cycling activities in the morning ranging from 38 mins to 42 mins.  When I cycle the same route and use the watch in the same way I get a failure at the end of the ride.  The failure reads:

strava needs a longer activity to upload.  Do you want to discard it?

I'm only given a yes or no.  No just returns me to the timing screen and yes drops out and all data lost.

I'm thinking about using an alternative tracker because this is proving annoying and useless.

  • This is clearly an ongoing problem that Strava are silent on and doing nothing about. I’ve searched these forums and Strava’s website. There’s no mention of this error message, even though it appears on the watch. I’ve a Galaxy Active 2 and it is now happened far too often to be acceptable for a paid app. I’ve tried all the solutions people have mentioned and the only one that works is to uninstall the app on the phone and the watch and reinstall them.

This is very frustrating as I never know until after an activity whether it’s going to happen or not. So my faith in the app is really dropping. Considering that it’s now happened to around 50% of my activities, it makes a mockery of being able to track progress over time. Not good enough Strava! And your customer service of not responding to these problems is terrible.

  • I have a gear S3 and sync had been working.  Samsung released an update to the watch and then Strava released an update.  On the strava app in the watch I click on the screen to sync the ride, it states it is successful but the ride is not listed on the web site.  I have been recording rides on both watch and phone since there are some stability issues on the watch (either tizen os or application).  Compared to Mapmyride and the Samsung app Strava is able to record heart rate and has more accurate GPS tracking. With mapmyride I had to disable bluetooth on the watch so that the app would use the GPS in the watch instead of polling data from the phone.

Uninstalled the phone app , reinstalled and reconnected it with the samsung.strava.com code.  The first ride synched but the past three have failed even though the watch states the sync has completed.

Gear is One UI Version 1.5

    Tizen Version 4.0.0.7

    Software Version R765AUCU2ETE1

  • Just discovered this page after this problem suddenly started happening on my last few runs. So frustrating losing runs and even more of a joke given the change to pay for more features.

Why would I pay for an app Strava can't even be bothered to support?

Has anyone else got any other updates on this? I've tried the above suggestions but none are working for me.

  • I have this issue also on a Galaxy Watch active since updating the app to v1.3.8.

It syncs walks, and paddleboarding on a remote river with no phone signal, but my 2 and 3 hours rides it cannot. At the end of each ride I get "strava needs a longer activity to upload. Do you want to discard it?"

The second ride, I made double sure that the GPS icon on my strava app turned white before I hit record. Same result. Luckily for the second ride I recorded on phone also. Really annoying!

  • It still isn't working and it's really frustrating. Strava should either solve this issue or warn the customers that it has no intention of supporting Samsung gears (just like it doesn't support those produced by Huawei). It seems that I only wasted money on my Galaxy Watch since it is obviously impossible for me to sync any activity with Strava.

  • Mine has worked reliably for a year (I was given the watch on fathers day 2019), but since the update, nothing. Seems theres no way to actually get through to anyone at strava either

  • So the only fix to (strava needs a longer activity to upload.  Do you want to discard it?) this error in this string may be a temp patch is to restart the watch after each successful activity and upload?

Last night I rode 2+ hrs and uploaded to Strava just fine. Then, 5min later without restarting my Samsung Galaxy Active 2 I recorded a shorter 5min 3+mi downhill. I got the "need a longer activity" error again on that 2nd activity. I'll restart next time and try again. Regardless, this absolutely sucks.

  • Happened to me today for the first time. Multiple previous workouts riding the same route were fine. My settings are on full and exactly the same as the other rides. Hopefully, a fix will be found soon. I have a Galaxy Watch Active 2

  • I've been having the same problem over the last couple of weeks; thought I was doing something wrong. I restarted my watch and the first activity after that worked okay, but now it has gone back to the error message.

  • This a crazy now.. it's happening more then 50% of the time. Doesn't matter if I restart the galaxy active2, reinstall it keeps happening. My go to app and it's now useless and Strava says nothing??? WTF Strava.. anything? Once it happens, when I try to start Strava it says Crashed RESUME Workout? You press yes and nothing happens. You press on walk or run to start and it crashes the app completely :( I'm so dissapointed this continues even after the latest update...

  • Okay, I've tried the solutions suggested above. It worked the first time I used it but now it has gone back to giving the error message when trying to save the activity. 🤬
I can see that I have ridden 20 miles, 16mph av. , 1hr 15mins etc so it must be recording all the info but just not letting me upload it to Strava. So surely must be a Strava software problem.
Time to spam the Twitter account if there's no help forthcoming.🤬

  • I logged a support call on friday last week for this. I got a reply today that says they're releasing an app update soon to resolve this issue. Fingers crossed!!

  • Same issue here with Samsung Galaxy watch active. Was going fine for the last few months and then this week it randomly does this. Also when I open the app again it says "crashed, do you want to resume activity?" If I say yes it just gives me a new ride, ... So I'm not sure what it thinks it's recovering...

  • Thank God I am not the only one the same frustrations....I am new to Strava (used to used Endomondo).  I switch since my company has a club and good way to connect during this pandemic.  For the first or so my heart rate would be monitoring during my ride/run, however when I when to sync that infor (HR, calories) wouldn't be included in my post. While this was happening, my Galaxy Active 2 watch WOULD sync completely fine.  After research, I found it was a permissions setting in my watch app to allow the sensors to share with my phone.  So once I did that I was psyched...now my last two workouts I got done and got the " Strava needs a longer activity message..."  WTF?!!

  • This has happened to me twice in the last week on a Samsung Gear Sport. Sure glad I didn't extend my free trial subscription to Strava Pro or whatever it's called.

    Useless application.

  • Im having the same problem with my new galaxy watch active. 40min run and still tells me it needs a longer activity?

  • I contacted Strava by twitter and explained the problem.  It was explained the watch needed longer to get a good/strong GPS signal which reminded me I normally have my watch on battery saving mode and only switched to full mode just before tracking my ride.  I now switch to full mode a good 5 minutes before my ride and all activities have been tracked.

If you use battery saving mode, change to full mode a good time before tracking your ride.

  • Since I got a new Samsung phone and had to sync my gearfit 2 with it I also receive this message after my shorter runs. This is very annoying as I am trying to track how far I run each month! And no, I don't have my watch on power saving mode! Please help!

  • I had this happen with a ride that was around 80 minutes long. Based on the comments above, I tried unpausing my workout outside (I was inside when it was showing me the message about workout being too short) and waiting for it to get GPS signal. It seems like maybe theres a bug where you can't end outdoor workouts without GPS signal. It worked and I could end workout! Maybe try this as a workaround?

  • I am facing exactly the same problem. My GPS is always on, it is not on power saving mode and it tracks indoor workout but all other activities which involves GPS it doesn't record. I close all watch apps, restart the watch, it then sometimes work and sometimes I've to restart it couple of times to enable it to track my activities. It is annoying and the reason I am not using samsung's own apps is because it discards everything older than 30 days.

  • Hi all,

Does some one know if strava support personnel are reviewing the community posts?
Any way to tag them to the issue we are discussing here?

I have the exact same problem.. My first run today with the watch and strava..

    Thanks!

  • I recently found the solution for myself from one of the posts here. Turn the Bluetooth off, once the watch is disconnected from the phone, open strava and scroll on any outdoor activity and instantly the GPS would connect (or few seconds, depending on the weather). Upon finishing the activity, connect bluetooth, connect the watch manually and sync strava activity from the watch manually. This seem to be working for me, so thought share. good luck.

  • @Dave Ridden

I have mine for about two weeks so I obviously haven't tried any other but the v1.3.8. Based on your experience, how often do the Strava team make updates? I'm really considering of returning my watch and switching to Garmin or even back to my phone.

    EDIT:

I made a mistake. I've just checked and the latest version was released on 10th June. Up until then app on my watch (I had bought it a week earlier) has been working without any issues. So theproblem is obviously within the latest update. On other treads I saw an official statement that the Strava is working to fix it. Hopefully everything will be OK soon, although many of us have been losing track onour results recently.

  • Same issues! Since the update, the app keeps crashing, the activities say they are too short to record and the manual sync will not work. No response from Strava yet.
