removal of BLE sensor support

Hi team Strava,

I'm really gutted to hear your are planning to remove BLE sensor support from your mobile apps. The alternative you mention (use another app to record your sensor data) isn't a real alternative: now I have to switch apps (during a workout!) in order to have a look at either the route or my HR. I have been a very happy paying member of your community because you serve al my needs in one integrated environment.

I will now have to either buy a head unit, or move to a different app that does help me with performance preparation, recording and reviewing in one storefront. Both options are a downgrade from my current Strava app experience but I'm afraid I don't see another option if you remove BLE sensor support. Isn't it possible to containerise BLE within the app so if users don't use it they are not bothered with the implementation of it? I btw personally have not had any crashes that I could relate to BLE sensor support.

  • Massively disappointed in this -- I use the Jabra Pulse earbuds and the reliability has been excellent -- music and heart monitoring with Strava.

I tried to open up a conversation on Twitter about this but was ignored.

If people who don't use this functionality are having problem, just give them a build without this functionality.

I am a paying subscriber to your premium services -- currently -- Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater

  • This makes paying for Summit features rather pointless if I can't sync my HR monitor.  I use the iPhone app and don't want to be forced into using a bike computer as well.  If I have to find another app to record the data and then send it over to Strava, there's really no point using Strava - I might as well just convert to the app that is capable of recording my data in the first place.  Hard to believe that your tech support cannot find a way to handle bluetooth when your competitors - that you are pointing us towards! - handle it just fine.  Pathetic!

  • Update: I submitted a request for a prorated refund of my summit membership and received it yesterday. I’d happily rejoin if proper function is restored. As a premium member for around 7 years, it’s silly that Strava can even consider a step this far backwards!

  • I`m using Polar HRM, no issue, no problem. Never hear any User with problems. So, why you take it away.

Many of my friends will cancel their subscrib to summit.

  • I use my iPhone as my cycle and run computer. I have heart rate, speed, cadence and power all connected via Bluetooth. I’ve loved using Strava and am a paid Summit club member to allow the functionality I have come to enjoy. I’m very unimpressed with Strava removing this basic functionality. Most other apps can manage this connectivity. Why can your developers not? If the connectivity is removed as planned I will be cancelling my subscription.

  • Am I missing all the posts thanking Strava for removing this malicious feature?

  • Bluetooth and ANT+ is a feature that I use for training so that I can manage my heartrate in real time. Now that isn't possible without purchasing an external module or using an external app.

So if I have to use something else to access the features I want, why should I use Strava?

Strava seems to have been going down hill recently:

    - Removal of bluetooth & ANT+ support.
    - Product advertisements at the bottom of activities,  "ZWIFT Try for free"  or "TrainerRoad: Start Training with TrainerRoad"
    - Constant advertisements for premium plan. Every time I open the app I need to close an overlay asking me if I want to join summit.

Normally I'm happy to pay  for a product that I enjoy. I want to give them my money to ensure that the service continues to  improve and get better, but why would I pay for a service that continues to remove the features I use and opts to make decisions in their own interests instead of the users.

  • What is going on at Strava?  Seriously?  Does anyone vet any ideas before you roll it out to the greater users?  Everyone  uses bluetooth devices as a minimum and many of us ANT+ too.  This is most thoughtless idea I've seen Strava do yet and you guys keeping setting the bar higher for stupid.  I thought I'd give you another chance last month after I got over you screwing over Relive but here you are again screwing your user base.

I got an idea for your next rollout, turn off the GPS because that is interfering with some users using treadmills and trainers.  Strava users don't use GPS, right?  Its all Zwift training now anyhow.

    Stupid, stupid, stupid.

What are you guys doing?  Do you even understand who your base are?

Guess its time to cancel again.  That didn't last long but nobody at Strave seems to be listening.

  • +1 for this sucking.  I think I'll just use the native tool in my watch for fitness tracking.

  • Incredibly disappointed.
I can use the wahoo app but have to switch between Strava and wahoo for live segments or routes!
How can so many other app succeed in pairing without crashing and Strava with all its resources can't!
At the end of my subscription I'll be cancelling.

  • Like many others have used a hrm and cadence using bluetooth to my smart phone and have done so without any issue for years too many for me to remember, I have now requested Strava refund the remaining 8 months I have left on my subscription i would much rather remain using Strava. Would be interested to know how many users you are losing because of this decision against how many left because the app was crashing.

Hoping you will rethink or resolve this

    Simon

  • Had 8 months left on my summit subscription contacted Strava last night over a refund within 30 minutes I had a full refund excellent customer service in this regard, I like many others had no issues or crashes using sensors I can only think strava has other plans and aren't bothered by the loss of revenue

  • Strava app has been working fine with my ant+ power and HR sensors and Android phones. No issues ever. I never paid the premium price, but if it comes to that sensor recording is the first feature I would actually be willing to pay for. It is something that actually adds value to me.

  • I second all of the reasons in this thread -- please reconsider this unfortunate decision.

Actually, please consider going the other direction and REQUIRING heart rate sensors and data to upload any ride.  This would be helpful in regulating and disqualifying eBike-enabled times on segments.

  • This makes no sense. I've been using Strava and bluetooth sensors for YEARS without trouble. This year I started using it with a power meter and it has been working fine. Why STRIP IT FROM EVERYONE? Just make it an option and warn users about stability concerns... wait it already was an option? So why remove the option to use it? If someone does have stability problems they could just not use BT...

  • Adding my name to the long list of Strava athletes that will not be renewing their paid membership. Its a great app but I need to see my HR along with my pace and distance when running/biking. It's now become redundant as a serious training app. Has Strava just jumped the shark? Save your product before it's too late and restore the HR functionality.

  • Training without HR is meaningless for me. And if I need to change to another app for that, I will completely change as well. Unnecessary to use multiple apps only to keep Strava. Goodbye and so long.

  • Without bluetooth pairing the app is not worth the cost. I will not be renewing my premium membership.

  • Strava has a chance here to restore confidence in its product, resurrect those cancelled Summit memberships and allow connections once more to heart rate monitors and power meters. Will it step up to the plate?

  • why are they removing both ANT+ and bluetooth,  aren't they different protocols? are both really causing problems that necessitate their removal?  sounds fishy...

i do emphathize with everyone here, but i think the app is trash anyway for a variety of other reasons. at least on my phone  anyways....  the combo of a decent garmin or wahoo watch or cycling computer and the strava desktop website is vastly superior.   much more data at your fingertips on a dedicated garmin, and visible in real time.   the ability to analyze your data on the website is so much better than the app,   even without summit.     if you are serious enough about your sport to pay for summit,  then use that money for a dedicated gps unit and use the free strava website,   much better experience.

  • While waiting for the mysterious failure reports let's start a list of devices that have been working just fine with sensors.

    • Samsung A3 (2017) Android 8.0 with Viiiva HR strap, Suunto HR strap and Garmin HR strap, P2Max S-type power meter, Garmin cadence sensor

Copy the list and add your own device and OS version + sensors to your post

  • First you take away my ability to automatically upload my rides to ReLive.cc, and now this BS.  Is your goal to make me want to drop not only my Summit membership, but Strava all together?!?!  If so, you're succeeding.
This isn't that i am too cheap to buy another device, as i already have a $350 Garmin computer.  It's about the convenience of easily uploading my ride when i get off the bike.

As a software developer myself, i can't for a minute believe there's no way to put a switch on the Strava preference menu to turn off the Bluetooth/ANT+ code.  Or even at worst case, provide two different apps, one app with it stripped from the code and one that's not. This isn't F'n rocket science.  Maybe the answer is to hire developers that know how to code!

For now, my solution will be that i will NEVER update the app, so that i can keep the version with ANT+ in it.  That is, unless you find some way to still F me on that too.

  • Like so many others - never had a problem with crashing. Also, like so many others, I am sure that Strava could fix this easily if they wanted to.

Back in the day, I started paying for Strava Premium even though I didn't really need the features it included, because I felt I should pay towards sustaining the company that gave me so much in the free app. But with the laziness and apparent dishonesty of this decision, my relationship with Strava is fundamentally changed.

Tracking, safety features and analysis all in one app, without the need to carry more hardware than the phone which I would be carrying anyway, was the reason I chose Strava in the first place, and it looks like Strava are taking away the reason I still pay my subscription.

Strava's recommendation that we all switch to Wahoo only looks like it works if we have Wahoo kit already.

Just switching to another tracking app (which after a couple of hours of research looks like it will be Polar Beat for me, just because I have a Polar OH1 hrm) isn't ideal because Strava's in-activity features are obviously not available if you aren't running the app.

I pay for Summit, mainly for hrm compatibility and the Beacon. I'll be sorry to lose the Beacon, but it looks like I'll be cancelling unless this decision gets reversed.
