# Wrong energy units in activity summary

In the web app, the activity summary shows "Total Work" and has a unit in kJ but that is wrong, the figure is actually kilocalories so should be kcal.

Under that, in the table, you show Calories and have a figure that is either one more, or one less, than the kJ figure shown above. What is this figure and why does it differ?

• Kilojoules (kJ), and calories (kcal), are both units that measure energy. You can convert kcals to kJs by multiplying by 4.18 (100 kcals = 418 kJ).

A Joule is the SI unit of work or energy, equal to the work done by a force of one newton when its point of application moves one meter in the direction of action of the force, equivalent to one 3600th of a watt-hour.

• All that is correct, but it doesn't fix the fact that they say kJ when they are displaying kcal.

• And to add to the confusion you can click on the link below the value to bring up an explanation that includes the following: "Energy Output measures the amount of work you've done during a ride, expressed in kilojoules (KJ)." But as you correctly point out the value reported is actually the amount of work expressed in kilocalories (kcal) and not in kilojoules (kJ).

• The units have now been removed.

Don't know why they didn't replace the kJ with kcal, wondering if they can't work out what units are coming in from uploads and get a mix of both so just decided not to put anything and hope that people know what units they are working in.

Seems like a cop out to me.
